Fall Preview: MTSU

Fall Preview for the Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders:

QB
#10         Logan Kilgore QB 6-3 185 r-Jr. Rocklin, CA (Bakersfield College)--11 games played. 32 carries for 106 yards and 1 TD. 214-365 passing for 2231 yards and 18 TD.
#12         Jeff Murphy QB 6-0 204 r-Sr. Alameda, CA (Alameda)--9 games played. 35 carries for 106 yards. 84-140 passing for 794 yards and 3 TD.
#11         Shaun White QB 5-11 210 r-Fr. Pensacola, FL (Pensacola Catholic HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??         Christian Adams QB 6-1 165 r-Fr. Murfreesboro, TN (Oakland)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??         Austin Grammer QB 6-2 200 Fr. Tuscaloosa, AL (American Christian Academy)--Incoming freshman.

Junior Logan Kilgore had a solid season in his first year as a starter for the Blue Raiders with over 2200 yards passing and 18 touchdowns on the season. Senior Jeff Murphy will battle Kilgore for the starting job after adding 794 yards in the air to the Blue Raider totals. Murphy could steal the job and find himself as the starter this fall although Kilgore is the strong favorite. Between redshirt freshmen Shaun White and Christian Adams and true freshman Austin Grammer, there is a nice looking future at quarterback for the Blue Raiders.

FB
#34         Kevin Mix FB 6-1 230 Sr. Nashville, TN (Father Ryan)--No stats in 2011.
#??         Kennedy McGruder FB 5-11 214 r-Sr. Memphis, TN (Bolton)--No stats in 2011.
#??         Chase Pennycuff FB 6-0 254 r-Fr. Murfreesboro, TN (Siegel)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??         Evan Ward FB 6-0 221 r-Fr. Pacifica, CA (Hargrave Military Academy)--Redshirted in 2011.

Unless significant changes are happening for the 2012 season, the fullback position will not be a major contributor for MTSU in the fall. If there is a fullback on the field, seniors Mix and McGruder as well as redshirt freshmen Pennycuff and Ward will all be in the mix to see the field in 2012.

RB
#02         Benny Cunningham RB 5-10 205 Sr. Nashville, TN (Goodpasture)--8 games played. 115 carries for 501 yards and 4 TD. 17 catches for 187 yards and 1 TD. 1 kickoff return for 11 yards. 1 tackle. 1 forced fumble.
#29         William Pratcher RB 5-7 198 r-Jr. Decatur, GA (Cedar Grove)--12 games played. 122 carries for 585 yards and 2 TD. 6 catches for 67 yards. 2 tackles.
#21         Drayton Calhoun RB 5-11 184 r-Jr. Clarkston, GA (Tucker HS)--No stats in 2011.
#??         Aaron Davis RB 6-0 206 Sr. Chicago, IL (Antioch (TN) HS)--No stats in 2011.
#??         Jordan Parker RB 6-1 195 Fr. Lawrenceville, GA (Collins HS)--Incoming freshman.

Senior Benny Cunningham looks to be the starter for the Blue Raiders after gaining over 500 yards in 9 games played with 17 catches in the pass oriented offense that MTSU runs. Junior William Pratcher will battle for the starting job and actually is the leading returning rusher although his pass catching ability is not on par with Cunningham. Pratcher should still be able to get over 100 carries in 2012 as the backup running back. Junior Drayton Calhoun didnt play in any games in 2011 but could work into the rotation along with senior Aaron Davis. Incoming freshman Jordan Parker should be redshirted.

TE
#??         Darrell Baptist TE 6-3 230 r-So. Memphis, TN (Whitehaven)--No stats in 2011.
#??         Jacob Corbaley TE 6-3 240 Jr. Oroville, CA (Oroville)--No stats in 2011.
#??         Terry Pettis TE 6-5 215 Fr. Fairburn, GA (Langston Hughes HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??         William Wilson TE 6-2 240 r-So. Memphis, TN (Kirby)--No stats in 2011.

With 4 new players on the roster that have not even been given roster numbers, do not look for the Blue Raiders to be implementing much tight end use very much. Baptist, Corbaley, Pettis, and Wilson all look to be options at tight end and may earn their way onto the field in 2012 whether on offense or special teams.

WR
#09         Kyle Griswould WR 5-10 193 r-Jr. Midland, GA (Shaw High School)--12 games played. 25 carries for 86 yards and 2 TD. 31 catches for 390 yards and 1 TD. 1 tackle.
#03         Tavarres Jefferson WR 5-9 191 Sr. Nashville, TN (The Ensworth School)--12 games played. 51 catches for 398 yards and 1 TD. 1 punt return for -1 yard.
#86         Anthony Amos WR 5-11 181 r-Sr. Fayetteville, NC (Westover HS)--11 games played. 27 catches for 379 yards and 3 TD. 4 tackles.
#81         Christian Collis WR 6-0 204 r-Fr. Opelika, AL (Beauregard HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#25         Reggie Whatley RB/WR 5-7 173 r-So. Rome, GA (Rome HS)--28 carries for 70 yards and 1 TD. 17 catches for 185 yards and 1 TD. 3 kickoff returns for 21.7 yard average.
#87         Vincent Van Horne WR 5-11 187 r-Sr. Bakersfield, CA (Bakersfield)--No stats in 2011.
#82         Arthur Williams WR 6-2 190 r-Jr. Seale, AL (Glenwood)--No stats in 2011.
#37         Harold Turner Jr. WR 5-8 176 r-Sr. Decatur, GA (Cedar Grove)--8 games played. 6 catches for 56 yards.
#05         Jeremiah Bryson RB/WR 5-8 185 r-Fr. Smyrna, TN (Smyrna)--Redshirted in 2011.
#16         Marcus Henry WR 6-0 187 So. Courtland, MS (South Panola HS/NW Miss. CC)--No stats in 2011.
#88         Marcus Thurmond WR 5-11 168 r-Sr. North Augusta, SC (North Augusta)--No stats in 2011.
#??         Houston Brown WR 5-10 188 r-Fr. Murfreesboro, TN (Brentwood)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??         Jermaine Dave WR 6-1 205 Fr. Murfreesboro, TN (Siegel)--Incoming freshman.
#??         Martin Dietrich WR 5-10 165 r-So. Dayton, OH (Blackman)--No stats in 2011.

The Blue Raiders have a trio of wide receivers that combined for 109 catches and just over 1100 yards receiving. Senior Tavarres Jefferson led with 51 tackles but only 1 touchdown. Griswould touched the ball 56 times adding 25 carries to his receiving totals. Senior Anthony Amos caught 27 passes and led the team with 3 touchdown catches. 4th projected starter Christian Collis was redshirted in 2011 as a freshman. Whatley, Van Horne, Williams, Turner and Bryson all look to work into the rotation as backups for the starting group.

Seniors Omar McLendon and Kendall Dangerfield lead the Blue Raider defensive line with a combined 85 tackles and 9.5 for loss. That is a staggering number of combined tackles for two defensive linemen. Junior Jimmy Staten added 29 tackles from his defensive tackle spot with sophomore Jijjuan Fennell giving the MTSU defense 24 tackles. While those four starters will play the majority of the snaps in 2012, Nolan (13 tackles), Bastien (33 tackles), McNeil, Pope (4 tackles), and Ugboaja (7 tackles) will get to play significant snaps for the Blue Raiders as well.

LB

Similar to the defensive line, the Blue Raider linebacker corps returns a group of starters that played well in 2011. Juniors Craig Allen (53 tackles) and Roderic Blunt (54 tackles) will start on the outside with sophomore Christian Henry in the middle after 36 tackles in 2011. Backups Gasque, Carmichael, Hones and Roberts all look to earn playing time for the Blue Raiders as well.

#??         Bryan Armstrong CB 5-10 184 r-Sr. Memphis, TN (Central)--No stats in 2011.

#??         John Kelly CB 5-11 175 r-So. Memphis, TN (Whitehaven)--No stats in 2011.
#??         Anfornee Stewart S 6-1 198 Fr. Duluth, GA (Duluth HS)--Incoming freshman.

While the defensive line and linebacker corps are littered with experienced players, only 2 of the 4 projected starters in the secondary have played in 2011. Juniors Kenneth Gilstrap (27 tackles) and Sammy Seamster (13 tackles) will man the cornerback spots and look to lead the defense as the most experienced starters. Junior Jajuan Harley and redshirt freshman Kevin Byard are the safeties although neither played in any games in 2011. Sharpe, Burke, Jones, and Farmer all look to push the starters for playing time with Jones making 30 tackles in 2011 from the strong safety position.

LS
#67         Blaine Sidders DS 6-1 228 r-Fr. Delafield, WI (Kettle Moraine)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??         William Eads LS 6-0 205 Fr. Hoover, AL (Hoover HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??         Greg Rein DS 5-10 243 r-So. New Port Richey, FL (Clearwater Central Catholic)

Redshirt freshman Blaine Sidders looks to be the long snapper in 2011 after redshirting in 2011 and getting a year of practicing his craft for the Blue Raiders.

K
#38         Carlos Lopez PK 5-10 208 Sr. Seymour, TN (Seymour)--No stats in 2011.
#??         Robert Oeding PK 6-3 217 r-So. Germantown, TN (Houston)--No stats in 2011.

With no one on the roster with any kicking experience, senior Carlos Lopez is the projected starter after making no kick attempts in 2011. Backing up Lopez is sophomore Robert Oeding who does not even have a current roster number.

P
#36         Josh Davis P 5-10 213 r-Jr. Dayton, TN (Rhea County)--13 punts for 42.1 yard average and 4 punts inside the 20 yard line and a long of 62 yards.
#??         Michael Kee P 5-11 172 r-Fr. Naples, FL (Naples)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??         Zachary Lopez P 5-11 198 r-So. Fayetteville, GA (Sandy Creek)

Junior Josh Davis punted 13 times in 2011 with a 42.1 yard average with 4 of the 13 punts landing inside the 20 yard line and boomed one 62 yards. He has a very good leg and should easily win the battle for the starting job very easily in 2012. Redshirt freshman Michael Kee and sophomore Zachary Lopez look to battle for the backup job this fall.

The Blue Raiders had a season to forget in 2011 with a 2-10 record that saw their only wins come from I-A bottom dwellers Memphis and Florida Atlantic. The Blue Raiders did not do themselves any favors with a fairly difficult non-conference schedule that includes trips to Georgia Tech and Mississippi State but easy matchups at home with Memphis and McNeese State. The Blue Raiders have to travel to WKU, FIU and Arkansas State but do not have to play ULL with newcomer South Alabama on the schedule instead. 5 wins is possible in 2012 but not very likely as the Blue Raiders look to be in store for another long season this fall.
