2011 Games of the year: Southern Miss versus Louisiana Tech

In an opening game between two eventual conference champions, Southern Miss pulled out a 2-point win over Louisiana Tech, 19-17.


Southern Miss took the opening drive 73 yards on 7 plays culminating in a 12-yard rushing touchdown by Kelvin Bolden to give the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead  with 11:38 left in the opening stanza. The Golden Eagles missed a field goal attempt in the 1st as well.

Louisiana Tech dominated the field position war in the 1st quarter starting drives on their own 41-yard line and the Southern Miss 14-yard line on separate occasions. Both drives ended with turnovers on downs when 4th down plays failed.

In the second quarter, no one was able to capitalize on field position advantages. The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss took that 7-0 lead into halftime.

Louisiana Tech struck first in the 3rd quarter following a Southern Miss turnover on downs. The Bulldogs went 58 yards on 8 plays culminating in a 28-yard field goal. That cut the lead to 7-3 with 4:39 left in the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles got back on track with a 38-yard field goal following a 9-play, 25-yard drive. That field goal extended the lead back to 7 points at 10-3 in favor of Southern Miss.  The ensuing kickoff was returned 86 yards by Lyle Fitte to end the 3rd quarter with a 10-10 tie.

Southern Miss began the 4th quarter with another field goal, this time from 25 yards giving the lead back to the Golden Eagles at 13-10. Louisiana Tech responded to a huge Southern Miss turnover on a punt with a 2-play, 3-yard drive that running back Lennon Creer ended with a 1-yard rushing touchdown that gave Louisiana Tech a 17-13 lead with 9:43 left in the game.

Southern Miss then took over and made field goals on consecutive possessions following the Bulldogs touchdown and took a 19-17 lead with 2:32 left in the game. Louisiana Tech had two final opportunities to go downfield and make a game winning field goal but were unsuccessful.
