Fall Preview: Ohio

Fall Preview for the Ohio Bobcats:

QB
#04 Tettleton, Tyler QB 6-0/200 RS JR Norman, Okla./Norman North--14 games played. 166 carries for 658 yards and 10 TD. 267-415 passing for 3302 yards and 28 TD. 1 catch for 23 yards. 1 tackle.
#15 Vick, Derrius QB 6-1/205 RS FR Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast--Redshirted in 2011.
#?? Greg Windham QB 6-2 192 Fr. Tampa, FL King--Incoming freshman.

After a sophomore season that saw Tettleton rush for 658 yards and pass for over 3300 yards and account for 38 touchdowns, the Bobcats are set at quarterback. He should easily hold on to his starting spot but there is concern due to the lack of quarterback depth on the roster in case of injury. Backing up Tettleton are redshirt freshman Derrius Vick and true freshman Greg Windham. Neither have played in a college game and are wild card if they have to play this fall.

RB
#22 Blankenship, Beau RB 5-9/202 RS JR Norman, Okla./Iowa State--13 games played. 93 carries for 462 yards and 4 TD. 3 catches for 19 yards.
#20 Boykin, Ryan RB 6-1/221 RS JR Woodstock, Ga./Etowah--14 games played. 104 carries for 435 yards and 1 TD. 14 catches for 92 yards and 1 TD.

#29 Hammonds, Kyle RB 5-8/180 FR Solon, Ohio/Solon--Incoming freshman.
#07 Patterson, Daz'mond RB 5-6/178 FR Plant City, Fla./Plant City--Incoming freshman.

Former Iowa State transfer Beau Blankenship adapted well in 2011 to MAC play with 93 carries for 462 yards and 4 touchdowns in his first year with the Bobcats. He will split starting duties with junior Ryan Boykin who had 435 yards on the ground and 14 catches. Palermo, Hammonds, and Patterson all have not see the ball on the college level but at least one is needed to step up and play some as a reserve this fall.

TE
#88 Thompson, Jordan TE 6-4/248 RS SR Rockford, Ohio/Parkway--14 games played. 24 catches for 258 yards and 2 TD. 1 tackle.

#?? John Tanner TE 6-4 230 Fr. Cincinnati, OH Moeller--Incoming freshman.

The Bobcats come into the 2012 season with 3 tight ends that caught passes and are experienced for the Ohio offense. Senior Jordan Thompson was the ringleader with 24 catches for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns and will be flanked by sophomore Derek Roback (6 catches) and junior Tyler Knight (1 catch). Juniors Troy Hill and Art Jordan will struggled to see the field on offense but could play on special teams. Redshirt freshman Andrew Pepin could jump up the depth chart with a strong fall camp.

The Bobcats have 5 returning wide receivers with catches on the college level with junior Donte Foster leading the way. Seniors Alphonso Lewis (64 tackles) and Jelani Woseley (53 tackles) lead a linebacker corps that is strong at the top but not very deep. Junior Keith Moore looks to be the other linebacker and made a solid 35 tackles in limited duty as a reserve in 2011. Grady (6 tackles), Jones (5 tackles), Stefanski (5 tackles), and Atwell (1 tackle) will compete with a group of redshirt freshmen, true freshmen and JUCO transfers for playing time this fall.

#?? Toran Davis DB 6-0 190 Fr. Decatur, GA Southwest Dekalb--Incoming freshman.

With 21 defensive backs on the roster, there are plenty of players on the roster to fill the secondary. Gerald Moore (84 tackles), Nathan Carpenter (53 tackles), Travis Carrie (49 tackles), and Larenzo Fisher (19 tackles) look to be the starters in the secondary and combined for 205 tackles for the Bobcat defense in 2011. Kristoff (52 tackles), Shaw (18 tackles), Denton (14 tackles), Hughes (24 tackles), Ingol (18 tackles0, and Leftwich (9 tackles) all have experience and should work into the rotation with 6 redshirt freshmen ready to make an impact on defense or special teams.

P
#56 Venham, Grant P 6-3/210 RS FR Belpre, Ohio/Vincent Warren--Redshirted in 2011.

With no one on the roster with any in-game punting experience, this will be a very interesting aspect of the Bobcat special teams. Redshirt freshman Grant Venham redshirted in 2011 but did get to practice with the team and hopefully is ready for the 2012 season.

K
#49 Weller, Matt K 6-0/203 RS SR Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg--14 games played. 25-34 field goal attempts. 19-20 from inside 40 yards Long of 49 yards. 1 blocked. 48-49 extra point attempts. 84 kickoffs with 10 touchbacks. 2 tackles.
#39 Yazdani, Josiah K 5-10/201 RS FR Albany, Ohio/Alexander--1 game played. 1 tackle.

One of the busier kickers in all of the nation, senior Matt Weller attempted 34 field goals during the 2011 season. He connected on 25 of those 34 attempts with 19 of 20 made inside of 40 yards. He was only 6 of 14 from outside 40 yards with a long of 49 yards and 1 blocked. Weller also made 48-49 extra point attempts and kicked off 84 times with 10 touchbacks on the season.

LS
#47 Chapman, Miles LS 5-10/165 RS FR Tiffin, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon--Redshirted in 2011.
#31 Williams, Bubba LS 6-1/195 RS FR Loveland, Ohio/Loveland--Redshirted in 2011.

Similar to the punting position, the long snapping job is full of inexperienced players. Chapman and Williams were both redshirted and only got to practice with the team but did not get to play in any games. One of the two must step up and have a solid season to give the punters and kickers a chance to make a difference in 2012.

ATH
#?? Sebastian Smith ATH 6-3 175 Fr. Pickerington, OH Central--Incoming freshman.

After only going 4-3 in their first 7 games of the 2011 season, Ohio looked to be in for a mediocre season last fall. The Bobcats turned everything around and won 5 straight games to get to the MAC title game before succombing to the NIU Huskies. Ohio turned  around and won the Potato Bowl giving them a 10 win season. The Bobcats frontloaded their non-conference schedule with all four non-conference games coming in the first 4 weeks of the season. Ohio travels to Penn State and Marshall (both 2011 bowl teams) with home games versus New Mexico State and FCS Norfolk State. With Toledo and NIU not on the schedule, 2012 could be another MAC title game appearance behind the arm of Tettleton.
