Ranking In Order Of Watchability Of The MWC Week One Games

Mountain West Conference Week One Games Ranked:

  1. Washington @ Boise State: Storylines are abundant in this game with former Boise State head coach Chris Petersen making his return to the blue turf on the visiting sideline taking the top spot. Boise State will be breaking in a new quarterback and a new feature back as well as hosting the Huskies for the first time. The previous three meetings were in Seattle 2x and Las Vegas. Boise is the better team but with major question marks in the offensive backfield, either team could win this ESPN nationally televised game.
  2. UNLV @ Northern Illinois: This game is a chance for UNLV to prove that making a high school head coach was not a bad idea. The Rebels are coming off of a 2-10 season while Northern Illinois is coming off of another MAC title. UNLV is not without talent as the Decker to Boyd combination looked good in 2014 and will only improve this fall. All the Rebels have to do is stop the 17th ranked rushing attack in the nation coming from NIU. Nothing about this game says it should even be close except for Northern Illinois making the cross country trip to start the season.
  3. New Hampshire @ San José State: Hosting a team from literally as far away as possible, San Jose State plays host to one of the better teams in the FCS in New Hampshire. The Spartans are coming off of a 3-9 season that saw them struggle against every opponents while New Hampsire is coming off of 11 straight FCS playoff appearances. This game could come down to the wire but no matter what, San Jose State will have its hands full with the Wildcats.
  4. Colorado @ Hawaii: Playing for the fourth time since 2010, Hawaii and Colorado are both looking to get back to the postseason after neither team coming particularly close in 2014. This will be the fifth overall meeting between the two schools with the previous four games being split 2-2. Expect a little more scoring from both teams with Hawaii hosting this season but I can't see any scenario that this will be a fun game to watch. Colorado should pull it out by a similar margin to the 2014 game.
  5. UC Davis @ Nevada: Coming off of a 7-6 season that ended in yet another bowl berth, the Nevada Wolf Pack need this win in the season and home opener versus UC Davis with matchups versus Arizona and Texas A&M to follow. This game has been played since the 1915 season with Nevada holding a 29-21-3 overall record versus the Aggies. The opponents have only met once since 2000 with Nevada rolling to a 36-7 victory.
  6. Southern Utah @ Utah State: Riding one of the nation's best defenses, Utah State is coming off of a 10-4 season that ended with a 21-6 win over UTEP in the New Mexico Bowl. Southern Utah, with only one FCS playoff appearance in the last 10 years, is hoping to come in and pull of the upset after losing the first three meetings in the matchup. All three previous meetings happened since 2000 with Utah State winning 30-14, 53-34, and 34-3. The only area that Southern Utah has the advantage is in nickname. Thunderbirds is a very impressive nickname for the program.
  7. Abilene Christian @ Fresno State: Fresno State is heading into the 2015 season looking to get back over .500 after a 6-8 end to the season last fall. The Bulldogs were not able to replicate the ability of Carr at quarterback but did have a solid rushing attack that finished the season ranked 46th nationally. Abilene Christian and Fresno State have met four times in history with all four meetings taking place in the 1960s. Expect this game to be much more one sided than those meetings as Fresno State should cruise to a blowout win.
  8. Morgan State @ Air Force: Coming off of a 10-win season in 2014, the Falcons bring in the nation's seventh ranked rushing attack from last season. Air Force loves to run the triple option and have lots of candidates to run the ball, making things so much more difficult for Morgan State on opening Saturday. This game will be the first time Morgan State has faced Air Force but the second time facing a service academy with a loss to Army in 2013.
  9. San Diego @ San Diego State: This "Battle of San Diego" should be more of a rout as the Aztecs come into this game off of another bowl appearance and the 28th ranked rushing attack in the nation led by Donnel Pumphrey. Pumphrey is coming off of a 1,867 yard, 20 touchdown season in 2014 and should run wild over the Toreros. San Diego is on a streak of four straight seasons with a winning record. This game is also the first meeting between the programs since a 42-12 win by SDSU in 1961.
  10. North Dakota @ Wyoming: For those looking at Wyoming's schedule at a glance, the season opener could be quite the scare until noticing that "St." is not after North Dakota. The Cowboys are opening the season with the North Dakota program that is not the 4-time defending FCS champs and that is a good thing. Wyoming is coming off of a 4-8 season in 2014 that saw things never quite get into gear. North Dakota is 13-21 in its last three seasons. This is the first meeting between the two programs.
  11. Mississippi Valley State @ New Mexico: Under the tutelage of head coach Bob Davie, the Lobos head into this season opener off of a 4-8 season in 2014. The Lobos bring in the 2014 fifth ranked rushing attack at 310.4 yards per game and should be able to run all over the Delta Demons in this game. Mississippi Valley State is 10-44 in its last five seasons. This is the first meeting between these two programs.
  12. Savannah State @ Colorado State: After losing quite a bit, including a head coach, from a very good team in 2014, the Rams at least get to start the 2015 season with a home win. One player Colorado State has coming back this fall is preseason All-American Rashard HIggins and his 96 catches for a FBS leading 1,750 yards. He alone should be more than worth the price of admission in this game. Savannah State is 4-53 since 2010.
