Colorado State University

Type of Offense: Pro-Style I. This offense is a run oriented offense that uses run plays and play action to get defenders out of position for passes in the 15-25 yard range. The tight end and fullback are more involved in the offense as the fullback is a blocker and the tight end is 70/30 blocking versus running routes. Most known for the isolation running plays in the middle, the offense has evolved to a more off tackle and “counter trey” running offense. This is more of the style of professional ranks allowing for a QB with a strong arm to thrive.

Type of Defense: 4-3.  Fast OLBs with the WLB being stronger in pass coverage and the SLB being stouter versus the run.  MLB is balanced and expected to make most of the tackles, especially versus the run game.  A lot of Cover 2 with the MLB expected to get deep (15 yards) on a pass play.  Corners on an island playing the edges with help over top.  Gap responsibilities on the run game with DL and LB filling gaps and DE normally containing on the edge.

• Run/Pass %: 50/50
• Run/Pass Attempts: 392/393
• Points Per Game: 16.5
• Points Allowed Per Game: 34.7

Key Returning Players:
• Pete Thomas, QB: Threw for 2662 yards and 11 TDs in 2010 averaging 221 in the air per game. With the lack of a decent running game in 2010 and realistic idea that one will not be coming in 2011, Thomas will be expected to play an even bigger role in 2011 with designs on a 3000 yard passing season.
• Mychal Sisson, WLB: The leading returning tackler had 95 tackles including 15 TFL and 4.5 sacks to go along with an interception, 2 fumble recoveries, 7 forced fumbles, and 1 defensive touchdown. Star potential and will be looked at hard by some NFL scouts. Could take his game to the next level in 2011 and really make the nation take notice.

Key Incoming Freshmen:
• Dorian Brown, RB: This 3 star running back out of Colorado is 6-1 220 pounds and has run a 4.5 40 yard dash. He has the size and strength to muscle in and get carries immediately in this pro style offense. He could be the answer the Rams have been looking for at the running back position.
• Isiah Norton, DT: This 3 star defensive tackle out of Texas is big (6-5, 300 pounds). He could project better to the offensive line as a stud OT if developed properly. It remains to be seen which side of the ball he ends up on but one thing is likely, he will find his way on the field in 2011.

Overall Assessment:
2-9 last season was unacceptable and 2011 must be much better for the coaching staff to stick around for the Rams. 2011 presents a chance to start out hot and maybe win more games to start the season that last year all together. None of the 5 teams that CSU opens with were impressive in 2010 allowing that hope that 3-4 wins could be had by the time the Boise game rolls around on October 15th. The last 7 games are fairly difficult with some almost guaranteed losses but a couple of games are definitely winnable. Overall, 4 wins with this schedule would be a great improvement in 2011 and should be at least the goal strived for by the Rams this fall.
