Fall Previews: Army

Preview for Army this fall:

QB
#8           Trent Steelman SR QB 6-0 204 Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green--9 games played. 24-45 passing for 424 yards and 3 TD. 132 carries for 645 yards and 12 TD.
#3           Angel Santiago SO QB 5-11 195 Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda--4 games played. 7-21 passing for 84 yards. 45 carries for 162 yards and 1 TD.
#11         Gino DeBartolo SO QB 6-2 205 Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford--1 game played. 4 carries for 20 yards.
#10         Cody Jackson JR QB 6-0 200 San Lorenzo, Calif./Junipero Serra--No stats in 2011.
#19         Parker Hite JR QB 6-0 185 Ninety Six, S.C./Ninety Six--No stats in 2011.

Multi-year starter Trent Steelman should lead the Army offense one more time as a senior after only playing in 9 games in 2011. Steelman was the team's second leading rusher and leading passer last season. Sophomores Angel Santiao and Gina DeBartolo played in Steelman's absence with Santiago playing the majority of the snaps. Expect Santiago to claim the #2 spot while juniors Jackson and Hite do not expect to contend for a spot on the depth chart.

RB
#26         Larry Dixon SO RB 6-0 220 Bremerton, Wash./Olympic --12 games played. 87 carries for 542 yards and 5 TD. 1 catch for 25 yards. 7 kickoff reutns for 12.9 yard average.
#6           Trenton Turrentine SO RB 5-9 209 Keller, Texas/Central--3 games played. 21 carries for 98 yards and 1 TD.
#27         Stephen Fraser SO RB 5-10 185 Tucson, Ariz./Sabino--6 games played. 14 carries for 77 yards.
#31         Terry Baggett SO RB 6-1 200 Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young--3 games played. 10 carries for 53 yards and 1 TD.
#20         Lawrence Scott SO RB 5-11 195 Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South--No stats in 2011.
#23         Stephen Ricciardi SO RB 6-0 190 West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison--No stats in 2011.
#37         Tony Giovannelli SO RB 6-0 180 Chatham, Ill. /Glenwood--No stats in 2011.

Sophomore Larry Dixon found his way into the lineup as a freshman and did not disappoint with 542 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns. Fellow sophomores Turrentine, Fraser, and Baggett also got some playing time that will prove beneficial in the future for the Army offense. The other three running backs must work their way up the depth chart and prove their worth to take any carries from the other backs.

SB
#1           Raymond Maples JR SB 6-1 200 Philadelphia, Pa./W. Philadelphia Catholic--11 games played. 146 carries for 1066 yards and 4 TD. 1 catch for 5 yards. 7 kickoff returns for 16.6 yard average.
#23         Malcolm Brown                SR SB 5-11 180 Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip--12 games played. 81 carries for 572 yards and 3 TD. 7 catches for 163 yards and 2 TD. 1 tackle.
#22         Kelechi Odocha SR SB 5-7 185 Columbia, Md./Atholton--5 games played. 10 carries for 82 yards and 1 TD.
#9           Scott Williams JR SB 5-8 170 Villa Park, Calif./Lutheran--10 games played. 6 carries for 33 yards. 30 kickoff returns for 20.6 yard average.
#15         Brian Austin SR SB 5-8 170 Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny--10 games played. 7 carries for 62 yards. 1 kickoff return for 26 yard average.
#17         Julian CrockettJR SB 5-8 168 Wesley Chapel, Fla./Berkeley Prep--No stats in 2011.

Junior Raymond Maples was the leading rusher by a wide margin in 2011 with over 1000 yards on the ground. Maples should be the starter barring injury. Senior Malcolm Brown proved in 2011 to be an explosive and talented back as well with 81 rushes and 7 catches last season. Odocha, WIlliams, and Austin should be able to get some fringe carries for the Black Knights as the triple option offense is sub friendly and gets the ball in many different players hands.

FB
#7           Jared Hassin SR FB 6-3 235 Delafield, Wisc./Kettle Moraine--12 games played. 98 carries for 450 yards and 1 TD. 2 catches for 39 yards,
#45         Hayden Tippett JR FB 5-11 234 Tempe, Ariz./McClintock--7 games played. 11 carries for 77 yards.
#4           Matthew Luetjen JR FB 6-0 205 Hennessey, Okla./Hennessey--6 games played, 4 tackles.
#34         Jay Tully JR FB 6-1 207 Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy--No stats in 2011.
#43         Dan McGue SR FB 6-2 229 Hinsdale, Ill./Benet Academy--No stats in 2011.
#44         Brady Earnhardt SO FB 5-8 205 Old Hickory, Tenn./Mount Juliet--No stats in 2011.

Senior workhorse Jared Hassin will get the majority of the snaps at fullback in the offense. His size and strength is perfect for wearing down the opposing defenses and allowing Army to break some big runs with the slot backs and running backs. Junior Hayden Tippett should spell Hassin as Tippett was the only other fullback to get any carries in 2011.

WR
#13         Jon Crucitti JR WR 5-11 195 Salisbury, N.C./West Rowan--11 games played. 26 carries for 123 yards and 1 TD. 1 catch for 1 yard. 2 kickoff returns for 21 yard average.
#2           Anthony Stephens JR WR 6-2 190 Greenville, S.C./Mauldin--12 games played. 2 catches for 54 yards and 1 TD.
#81         Patrick Laird JR WR 6-3 205 Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury--12 games played. 1 catch for 14 yards.
#21         Chevaughn Lawrence SO WR 6-3 190 Fairview Heights, Ill./O'Fallon Township--8 games played. 1 catch for 9 yards.
#28         Justin Allen SR WR 5-10 179 Fletcher, N.C./West Henderson --10 games played. 1 carry for -13 yards. 1 tackle.
#32         Ryan Morgan SO WR 5-11 170 Ramona, Calif./Ramona--No stats in 2011.
#33         E.J. Tucker JR WR 5-11 195 Morganville, N.J./Marlboro--No stats in 2011.
#82         Michael Hudson SO WR 6-3 208 Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling--No stats in 2011.
#83         Ross McDonald SO WR 6-3 210 Avon, Conn./Avon--No stats in 2011.
#84         Zach Williams SO WR 6-1 172 New Braunfels, Texas/Canyon--No stats in 2011.
#85         Robert Wright JR WR 6-2 180 Greenville, Tenn./Greenville--No stats in 2011.
#87         Justin Newman SO WR 6-3 195 Laveen, Ariz./Mountain View--No stats in 2011.

The wide receiver position is hard to judge for a triple option team because they rarely pass the ball making the receivers mostly blockers or running backs. Junior Jon Crucitti should be the first wide receiver called into action as he is a running threat on the outside. Crucitti had 26 carries as opposed to only 1 catch in 2011. Juniors Anthony Stephens and Patrick Laird should get some playing time as well with Stephens showing big play ability with a 27 yards per catch average in 2011.

#54         Tom Houser SR OT 6-3 256 Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon--Did not play in 2011

The Army offensive line is based on the middle with senior Frank Allen at left guard who started all 12 games in 2011. Sophomore Ryan Powis started 2011 as a backup but took over in the second half of the season and ended the season starting 6 straight games. Matt Villanti made starts all over the line in 2011 with 7 credited starts but should slide nicely into the right guard spot. Jebb and Kime look to be the tackles although Jebb was only used as a reserve in 2011 and Kime only made 3 starts. Seniors Will Wilson and Derek Bisgard should be right up there fighting for starting spots with a combined 5 starts in 2011. The rest of the reserves is difficult to tell as there are 8 sophomores on the roster and a new group of freshmen coming in as well.

#39         Tyler Glasz SO DB 5-11 205 Cibolo, Texas/Byron P. Steele--No stats in 2011.

The secondary for Army is very experienced with 3 seniors and a sophomore rounding out the lot. Senior free safety Thomas Holloway leads the group with 76 tackles and 1 interception in 2011. Kyler Martin was tough at the line of scrimmage getting 3.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. Josh Jackson made 40 tackles and was also the primary punt returner in 2011. Sophomore Lamar Johnson-Harris got better as the season progressed and is a certain starter in 2012. Nesbit, Washington, Shrader, Beloney, Jackson, and Dickson are all in the mix to become strong backup in the fall.

DL
#45         Holt Zalneraitis JR DL 6-2 225 Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock--12 games played. 25 tackles, 1.5 for loss. 1 pbu, 1 pd, 1 fumble recovery.

#74         Shane Finnane JR DT 5-10 233 Elgin, Ill./St. Edward--No stats in 2011.

With the loss of so many important defensive linemen, the jobs are all up for grabs in 2012. Holt Zalneraitis looks to be the best returning player on the line with 25 tackles and a fumble recovery. Sophomore Jacob Drozd came on as a freshman and looks to be right in the mix for a starting job this fall. Keller, Glover, and Mackey also have some playing experience but there is a large group of players to contend to be in the defensive line rotation.

LB
#6           Geoffery Bacon SO MLB 6-0 200 Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside--60 tackles, 2.5 for loss. 1 interception, 1 pbu, 2 pd, 1 fumble recovery. 1 defensive touchdown.
#22         Nate Combs SR LB 6-1 225 New Albany, Ind./Saint Xavier--12 games played. 37 tackles, 6 for loss. 3 sacks, 3 pbu, 3 pd, 2 fumble recoveries. 1 defensive touchdown.
#48         Michael Cermak SO LB 6-0 220 Maryville, Tenn./Heritage--6 games played. 4 tackles.
#9           Hayden Pierce SO LB 6-3 180 Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza--10 games played. 32 tackles, 3 for loss. 1 pbu, 1 pd.
#40         Zach Watts SR LB 5-10 207 Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny--12 games played. 26 tackles, 6.5 for loss. 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble.
#56         Corey Watts JR LB 5-11 220 Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny--11 games played. 15 tackles, 1 for loss. 1 sack.

#47         Ryan McCollum JR LB 6-1 224 Cortland, Ohio/Kennedy--No stats in 2011.
#52         Zachary Williams JR LB 5-11 210 Melissa, Texas/Melissa--No stats in 2011.
#58         Jay Joliffe SO LB 5-10 200 El Paso, Texas/Chapin--No stats in 2011.
#59         Alfred Fields JR LB 6-0 195 West Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast--No stats in 2011.
#78         Colby Miller JR LB 6-1 215 Phenix City, Ala./Smiths Station--No stats in 2011.

Sophomore Geoffery Bacon looked great as a freshman with 60 tackles and a defensive touchdown in 2011. He should be penciled in at the middle of the defense with either senior Nate Combs, senior Zach Watts or sophomore Hayden Pierce playing alot at the other linebacker position. Many of the linebackers should get some playing time on special teams as well.

LS
#89         Frank Ceva SR LS 6-2 222 Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman--11 games played. 5 tackles.

Senior Frank Ceva was an important part to the Army special teams making the snaps in 11 of the 12 games in 2011. Ceva should snap in all the games in 2012 and allow the punters and kickers plenty of time make a difference.

P
#18         Chris Boldt SR P 6-0 181 St. Louis, Mo./De Smet Jesuit--31 punts for 39.8 yard average. 10 inside the 20 yard line. Long of 72 yards.

Punter Chris Boldt averaged 39.8 yards per punt in 2011 and pinned the opposing team inside the 20 yard line in nearly 30% of his punts. Boldt also had a long of 72 yards which was also a career high. While he is not flashy, he gets the job done for the Black Knights and his ability to pin opposing teams inside the 20 is a special teams weapon.

K
#36         Billy Fisher JR K 6-1 170 Canfield, Ohio/Canfield--No stats in 2011.
#37         Eric Osteen SR K 6-1 187 Augusta, Ga./Richmond Academy--12 games played. 1 tackle. 57 kickoffs with 10 touchbacks.

The kicking position is a question mark in 2012 with neither kicker attempting a field goal in 2011. Senior Eric Osteen is the kickoff specialist and should have the inside track to kick for the Black Knights in 2012.

Overall, after a surprising 2010 season that saw the Black Knights make and win a bowl game, Army fell back to earth with a losing season in 2011. Army looks to rebound with a reasonable schedule including 4 games versus MAC teams (NIU, EMU, Kent State, Ball State) and home games versus Boston College and Air Force. Senior quarterback Trent Steelman will be essential to bookend a disappointing junior year with bowl games in his sophomore and senior seasons. 6 wins is very possible but in order to secure a bowl game, 7 wins is essential. 7-5 is the best scenario and 4-8 would be about rock bottom for the Black Knights.
