Fall Preview: East Carolina

Fall Preview for the East Carolina Pirates:

QB
#07 Rio Johnson QB 6-2 188 Jr-1L SN-S’09 Atlanta, Ga. (Sandy Creek)--4 games played. 7 carries for -31 yards. 20-29 passing for 157 yards.
#05 Shane Carden QB 6-2 216 So-SQ SN-S’10 Houston, Texas (Episcopal)--No stats in 2011.
#13 Cody Keith QB 6-3 189 Fr-RS SN-S’11 Charlotte (Cheshire Academy)--Redshirted in 2011.
#09 Brad Wornick QB 6-2 192 Sr-1L WO-F’08 Charlotte (Ardrey Kell)--No stats in 2011.
#?? Ethan Long QB 6-4 233 Fr-HS WO-S’12 North Charleston, S.C. (Fort Dorchester)--Incoming freshman.

Spring brought a 3-way battle for the starting quarterback spot to replace record setting Dominique Davis who was lost to graduation. Junior Rio Johnson, sophomore Shane Carden and redshirt freshman Cody Keith are all listed at the top of the depth chart post spring. Johnson has the slight lead after getting playing time behind Davis as a junior and should win the spot. Neither Carden or Keith played in 2011 but had strong spring camps and should continue to push Johnson for the starting spot. Senior Brad Wornick and freshman Ethan Long are too far down the depth chart to make an impact in 2012.

RB
#28 Reggie Bullock RB 5-9 178 Sr-1L SN-S’11 Las Vegas, Nev. (Arizona Western CC)--6 games played. 95 carries for 428 yards and 4 TD. 18 catches for 95 yards. 3 kickoff returns for 23.7 yard average.
#35 Michael Dobson RB 6-0 185 Jr-2L SN-S’09 Mount Airy (Mount Airy)--12 games played. 63 carries for 221 yards and 3 TD. 11 catches for 96 yards. 3 kickoff returns for 19.3 yard average. 1 tackle.
#?? Hunter Furr RB 6-0 223 Jr-TR TR-F’11 Lewisville (North Carolina)--Transfer from North Carolina.
#34 Torrance Hunt RB 5-8 177 Jr-2L SN-S’09 Durham (Jordan)--12 games played. 109 carries for 489 yards and 2 TD. 6 catches for -3 yards. 6 kickoff returns for 18.2 yard average. 2 tackles.
#31 Chris Hairston RB 6-0 180 Fr-RS SN-S’11 Winston-Salem (Parkland)--Redshirted in 2011.
#42 John Barnes-Smith RB 5-11 213 So-SQ WO-F’10 Wendell (East Wake)--No stats in 2011.
#?? Collin Walsh RB 5-6 159 So-HS WO-S’12 Tolland, Conn. (Tolland)--No stats in 2011.
#?? Jamal Tillman RB 5-9 190 Fr-HS WO-S’12 Charlotte (West Charlotte)--Incoming freshman.

Senior Reggie Bullock is the leading contender for the starting running back for the Pirates after a 2012 season that saw him gain 428 yards and make 18 catches. In a bit of a surprise, 2nd on the depth chart is junior Michael Dobson who carried 63 times for 221 yards and added 11 catches. North Carolina transfer Hunter Furr is third in line after having to sit out in 2011 due to NCAA transfer rules. The biggest surprise is leading returning rusher Torrance Hunt has been bumped down to 4th on the depth chart after gaining 489 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground in 2011. Redshirt freshman Chris Hairston rounds out the top five running backs and should be a player to watch on special teams this fall.

TE/H-Back

#02 Justin Hardy IWR 6-0 185 So-1L WO-F’10 Vanceboro (West Craven)--10 games played. 1-1 passing for 51 yards. 64 catches for 658 yards and 6 TD. 2 tackles.

#81 Cedric Thompson IWR 5-9 185 Fr-RS WO-F’11 Kings Mountain (Kings Mountain)--No stats in 2011.

The Pirates run a base four receiver formation that tends to be a bit pass happy. ECU has 8 returning wide receivers that made a catch in 2011. Sophomore Justin Hardy leads all returnees with 64 catches and 6 touchdowns in 2011 followed by senior Andres Bodenheimer (46 catches), sophomore Danny Webster (43 catches), and junior Reese Wiggins (29 catches). This is a starting wide receiver corps that accounted for 182 catches for nearly 2000 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2011. Backing them up will be Arrington (2 catches), Harris (23 catches), Jones (6 catches and 4 TD), Cannonm Sumpter, Weymann, and Richardson. Jones looks to be the breakout star of the reserves with his size (6-8) making him an ideal red zone receiver and with 4 of his 6 receptions in 2011 going for touchdowns.

#?? Keifer Neal Offensive Line 6-5/310 JR Anaheim, Calif. (Golden West College)--JUCO transfer.

The ECU offensive line is very experienced with 4 of the 5 projected starters having extensive in-game experience. Right guard Will Simmons started all 12 games and is looking to have a 2nd year full of starts and compete for all-Conference USA honors. Right tackle Grant Harner has 20 career starts at right tackle although he struggled through an injury plagued 2011 season. Adhem Elsawi started all 7 games he played until an injury took him out for the rest of the 2011 season. He is back and looking better than ever at left tackle. Left guard Taylor Hudson played in all 12 games with 11 starts and could be a dark horse candidate for all conference honors this fall. The only surprise is center Taylor Hudson who did not get any game action in 2011 but beat out senior Josh Clark who played in all 12 games and started 6 at center in 2011. This should be a long battle as redshirt freshman CJ Struyk is also in the race for the center position. The backup offensive linemen are severely inexperienced with only Smith and backup left guard Drew Gentry having any game experience.

The Pirates run a 3-4 defense that needs strong run-stopping defensive lineman that are bulky. ECU has that and more with starters Lee Pagues who made 26 tackles in 2011 and is 6-2, 290 pounds, Michael Brooks who made 55 tackles at nose tackles and is 6-3, 313 pounds, and Matt Milner who made 37 tackles and is 6-4, 259 pounds. All are ready to keep improving a Pirate defense that was horrible in 2010 and not that good in 2011. Backups Dixon (9 tackles), Williams (31 tackles), Lattimore, and Rose (12 tackles) are all ready to get in the rotation and make some big defensive plays for ECU in 2012.

#46 Robert Huckabee ILB 6-3 230 So-1L WO-F’10 Wrightsville Beach (Hoggard)--No stats in 2011.

The ECU coaching staff emphasizes depth at the linebacker position due to the use of 4 linebackers in the base defensive formation. The Pirates have 10 linebackers that made tackles in 2011 led by sophomore Jeremy Grove who made 122 tackles as a freshman for the Pirates. Senior Daniel Drake added 74 tackles, junior Derrell Johnson added 39 tackles and 4th starter Maurice Falls made 8 tackles in 2011. Backups Tudor (58 tackles), Baker (32 tackles), Geary (29 tackles), Holmes (5 tackles), Overton, Williams (9 tackles), and Craig (3 tackles) accounted for over 1/3 of the tackles returning in 2012.

#?? Clay Washington DB/RB 5-11 186 So-HS WO-S’12 Fayetteville (Seventy-First)--No stats in 2011.

The Pirates nay have an experienced front 7, the back line of defense is very inexperienced and will be the biggest question mark for ECU coming into the 2012 season. Junior Damon Magazu is the leader at free safety and made a solid 80 tackles to go with 4 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries last fall. Production drops off after Magazu with cornerbacks Jacobi Jenkins (15 tackles) and Leonard Paulk (28 tackles) playing well in limited action but it is unknown whether they can handle starting roles on a regular basis. Strong safety Lamar Ivey only made 6 tackles in 2011 and is strongly pursued by JUCO transfer Chip Thompson who is ready to come in and play immediately in the Pirate defense. Fellow JUCO transfer Adonis Thompson will push Jenkins for a starting cornerback spot and could easily win the job with a strong fall camp. Of the reserves, only Venable (8 tackles) and Sykes (11 tackles) and Lyon (3 tackles) have any real experience.

LS
#55 Charlie Coggins DS 6-3 188 So-SQ WO-F’10 Albemarle (Albemarle)--No stats in 2011.
#75 C.J. Struyk DS 6-2 288 Fr-RS WO-F’11 Morehead City (West Carteret)--No stats in 2011.

Sophomore Charlie Coggins is the projected starter at long snapper for the Pirates after a solid spring. Backup CJ Struyk is battling for a starting center job and could end up as a long snapper only in the case of an emergency for ECU this fall.

P
#51 Phil McNaughton P 6-1 266 Sr-SQ TR-F’10 Taren Point, NSW, Australia (Univ. Tech)--9 punts for 38.7 yard average with 1 over 50 yard and 1 blocked.
#38 Trent Tignor H/P 6-5 213 Jr-2L WO-F’10 Hoschton, Ga. (Mill Creek)--No stats in 2011.

Spring practice was not enough time for the ECU coaching staff to determine who the starting punter will be in 2012 after both Phil McNaughton and Trent Tignor both played well and made cases for starting. McNaughton looks to be the slight favorite for the simple fact that he did punt some in 2011. He averaged 38.7 yards per punt but had one blocked last fall. Tignor has not kicked in a game situation but could get the chance to this fall.

K
#20 Warren Harvey PK 5-11 205 So-SQ WO-F’10 Greenville (J.H. Rose)--No stats in 2011.
#?? Connor Torruella PK 5-10 180 Fr-HS WO-S’12 Garner (Garner)--Incoming freshman.

Kicker looks to be a position of question marks with neither sophomore Warren Harvey or freshman Connor Torruella having kicked in a college game. Harvey looks to be the favorite for the starting position after a solid spring of drills. Torruella could come in and steal the job this summer but is facing an uphill battle with Harvey having a year advantage on him.

ECU had a rough start to the 2011 season with losses in 4 of their first 5 games and needing to almost be perfect along the final 7 games to earn a bowl berth. Things went well as the Pirates got back to .500 with a 3-game winning streak but went south in a hurry with the Pirates losing 3 of their final 4 to finish at 5-7 and miss a bowl game. 2012 sees a familiar schedule for the Pirates with non-conference games versus Appalachian State, South Carolina, North Carolina and Army. The Pirates played two of those 4 opponents in 2011 as well. ECU was handed a manageable conference slate with road games versus UCF, UAB, and Tulane, and Southern Miss as well as home games versus UTEP, Memphis, Houston, and Marshall. 2012 could be a year that sees the Pirates get back to a bowl game but they must go at least 2-2 in non-conference games to offset the likely 2-3 losses in conference play. 7-5 and another trip to a bowl games for the Pirates looks like the best bet.
