Senior Zac Dysert leads a RedHawk
offense that averaged 299 yards per game in the air. Dysert threw for 3513
yards and 23 touchdowns last fall for Miami OH. Backing up Dysert is junior
Austin Boucher who saw very limited action as the backup to Dysert. The
RedHawks have 3 redshirt and 1 true freshman that will be saved for the future
after Dysert.
RB

The RedHawks struggled on the
ground in 2011 with only 73.8 yards rushing per game. Eric Finklea is the
leading returning rusher with 328 yards on the ground and 4 touchdowns. Orne
Bey is the backup running back and is very inexperienced with only 4 carries
for 5 yards as a redshirt freshman last fall. Also in the running for playing
time is a group of 2 redshirt and 4 true freshmen that will compete all summer
and early fall for carries.
FB
#46 Justin Semmes 6-2 230

catches for 79 yards and 3 TD. 2 kickoff returns for 22 yard average. 2
tackles.
While one of the freshmen may be
moved to fullback, the only current fullback on the roster is junior Justin
Semmes who had 41 carries and 8 catches
for a total of 5 touchdowns in 2011. He will be a very important part of the
RedHawk rushing attack that must improve this fall.

While senior Matt Kennedy started
6 games for the RedHawks in 2011, he did not make any catches last fall. White,
Slack, and Gudeman all saw playing time as well but did not make any catches
either. Someone or a group of players must step up and make some catches to get
the tight end involved in the RedHawk offense in 2012.

The RedHawks have a group of 5
wide receivers that made 20+ catches in 2011 and are led by junior All-American
candidate Nick Harwell and his 97 catches in 11 games played last fall. Harwell
is one of the top wide receivers in the nation but is flanked by a very
talented group of players. Senior Andy Cruse (43 catches), sophomore David
Frazier (28 catches), sophomore Dawan Scott (20 catches), sophomore Willie
Culpepper (9 catches), and Wurzelbacher (1 catch) who combined to add 101
catches to the offense and 7 touchdowns for a very powerful passing attack.

Miami OH has a group of projected
starters on the defensive line that all made starts in 2011. Seniors Austin
Brown (33 tackles), Mike Johns (23 tackles), and Jason Semmes (42 tackles) are
all very experienced and should be solid starters again in 2012. The other projected
starter is Wes Williams who only saw action in 3 games but was a force on the
RedHawk defense with 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and an interception that he
returned for a touchdown. Williams could have a breakout season in 2012.
Jackson, Becks, Wamulumba, and Shane will all compete for playing time with a
group of 3 true freshman who will all be looking to earn spots on the depth
chart this fall.

The 4-3 defense of the RedHawks
has a group of semi experienced linebackers that must step up from part time
starters to full time starters and leaders of the defense. Seniors Evan Harris,
Jaytee Swanson and Luke Kelly combined for 94 tackles in 2011 and look to all
see the field extensively. Tucker (18 tackles), Wade (11 tackles), Krotz (1
tackle) and Boucher (11 tackles) will be in competition for playing time and
should make some plays for Miami OH this fall. The RedHawks have a staggering 9
redshirt and true freshmen on the roster that should fight for special teams
and depth chart spots.
DB
#06 D.J. Brown 6-1 179 Defensive

Jay Mastin DB Centerville, OH Centerville 6'2" 200--Incoming

Marshall Taylor DB Cordele, GA Crisp County 6'4" 185--Incoming
freshman.
The RedHawks have three very
experiences defensive backs from 2011 that combined to make 31 of a possible 36
starts in 2011. Safety Pat Hinkel and cornerback Dayonne Nunley made 128
tackles and 4 interceptions on the season with Nunley also breaking up 13
passes and defending 16 passes. Senior DJ Brown added 30 tackles with 4 pass
break up and a fumble recovery. The final starting spot is up for grabs with 4
other defensive backs making at least 1 start in 2011. Dupuy, Bowers, Burris,
Payne, Jones, Taylor and Olberding will all battle for playing time that will
be plentiful versus the pass happy offenses of the MAC.
K
#39 Mason Krysinski 6-3 196
Placekicker/Punter JR Shelby Twp., MI (Eisenhower)--12 games played. 2-6 field goal attempts. Long of 45
yards. 30-33 extra point attempts. 47 kickoffs with 1 touchback. 1 tackle.
#98 Alex Flexer 6-0 181 Kicker RS FR Dublin, OH (Jerome)--Redshirted in
2011.
Kaleb Patterson K Duncan, SC Byrnes 5'9" 160--Incoming freshman.
Junior Mason Krysinski had a
rough sophomore season only connecting on 2-6 field goal attempts with a long
of 45 yards. He was 1-4 from inside 40 yards. Krysinski also only made 30-33
extra point attempts and kicked off 47 times with only one touchback. Flexer
and Patterson could easily fight for playing time kicking the ball.
P
#45 Zac Murphy 6-0 205 Punter RS
JR Cincinnati, OH (Kings)--12 games played. 56 punts for 39.1 yard average. 13 inside the 20 yard line
and 7 over 50 yards. 1 blocked. 1 carry for -1 yard. 1 tackle.
Junior Zac Murphy had a solid,
yet unspectacular, season in 2011 with 56 punts for a 39.1 yard average
including 13 punts inside the opponent 20 yard line and 7 over 50 yards. Murphy
also had 1 kick blocked. Murphy must improve that average to over 40 yard to
give Miami OH the chance to take advantage of field position this fall.
LS
#60 David Zulandt 6-1 174 Long
Snapper RS SR Chardon, OH (Cleveland Benedictine)--No stats in 2011.
The biggest problem for the RedHawk in 2011 was the inability to score
as many points as they were capable of scoring. The RedHawks were held under 10
points in 3 games going 1-2 in those games. While finishing 4-8 the RedHawks
lost 5 of those 8 games by 9 points or fewer. Miami OH upped the ante with a
2012 schedule that opens with a trip to Ohio State. Another trip to Cincinnati
and a home game versus Southern Illinois flank a trip to the blue turf of Boise
State. The RedHawks miss out on NIU and Toledo and get to face Ohio at home
with an overall very winnable schedule. Behind Dysert and Harwell, this could
be a year of great improvement as long as the defense can give up fewer than 20
points more than the 4 times they did in 2011. 6-6 with the possibility of 7-5
looks very good for the RedHawks as one of the most improved teams in the MAC
in 2012.
