Conference USA News and Notes: 8/23/12

With the season right around the corner, today we are looking at Conference USA and the last minute preparations being made for the season. There is a lot of information about fall camps and scrimmages as well as a nice article on the maturity of Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato.

East Carolina:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Head Coach Ruffin McNeill completed his third fall camp at East Carolina as the Pirates wrapped up the NCAA-recognized preseason period with a soggy two-hour, shells-only workout Monday morning on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
McNeill guided ECU through opening individual and positional drills before spending a combined 35 minutes in skeleton and team-on-team segments that featured competition between preseason depth chart members on both sides of the ball in lieu of scout squads.

Houston:
Houston headed to Robertson Stadium this morning to simulate a Gameday schedule. Houston's captains (Jacolby Ashworth, D.J. Hayden, Matt Hogan, Charles Sims, Phillip Steward) won the coin flip, although no coin was actually present for the decision.
After the walkthrough and meetings throughout the day, the Cougars returned to the practice field and continued their preseason work.

Marshall:

HUNTINGTON -- The game is slower for Rakeem Cato now, and not just because he's faster.
Marshall's sophomore quarterback is ready for his second season as a starter. He's matured. He's stronger. He's wiser. The beard is still in place. And this August in preseason workouts, he's been dripping with sweat more than emotion.
That's good, because it was Cato's emotions that got the best of him and took him out of the starting lineup as he learned before prospering in 2011.

Memphis:
The University of Memphis held its final scrimmage of the preseason on Wednesday as the team moved closer to breaking camp and moving into game week preparations ahead of the Sept. 1 season opener against UT Martin.
"There was some good and some bad in it," said first-year Tiger head coach Justin Fuente. "There was some good focus. There were some good plays on both sides of the ball. There was some good attention to detail then there was aspects that are lacking. That is where we are at. I was pleased in some things and disappointed in others."

Rice:
The Rice Owls began their detailed preparations for the 2012 opener against UCLA with an 18-period workout on the grass practice field north of Rice Stadium on Wednesday.
"It was a good practice, but we have to continue to work on our consistency," Rice head coach David Bailiff said after. "We had two weak periods where we had a lull and we had to jazz them up a little a the end. We want them out here mentally focused so that they are the ones to jazz themselves up. "

Southern Miss:
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - With less than two weeks remaining until their Sept. 1 season opener at Nebraska, Southern Miss worked for two and a half hours on game situations inside Roberts Stadium on Wednesday.
In just helmets, the Golden Eagles walked through countless game situations including offensive and defensive drives and special teams situations.
"We just worked on game day today," said first year coach Ellis Johnson. "We went through our pre-game routine with warm ups and all. I'm not sure it didn't help the coaches more than the players just to make sure we are all on the same page."

Tulane:
NEW ORLEANS - At the midway point of the final week of preseason practice, first-year Tulane head football coach Curtis Johnson decided his team needed a break from the routine.
After watching the offense turn in several high-five moments during the morning session at the Westefeldt Practice Facility, Johnson loaded his team on buses for what they assumed would be the second half of a two-a-day practice at the New Orleans Saints facility in Metairie. Instead, the buses pulled into Rock `n' Bowl on South Carrollton Avenue - a local hotspot known for its combination of bowling alley and live musicians - for a little relaxation and team bonding.

Tulsa:
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The first words Head Coach Bill Blankenship uttered when asked about the receiver position was "what a difference a year makes."
"It's really amazing. We went into the Oklahoma game last year with virtually no game experience at wide receiver. But as the year progressed, Burnie (Bryan Burnham) and Jordan (James) played the entire season," said Blankenship. "Thomas Roberson is coming off a year he had to sit out, but he started and played nearly a full season as a freshman. Now, add Keyarris Garrett, who has really matured and becoming a tremendous weapon, to that group and you have four experienced guys."
