Independent News and Notes: 9/20/12

IA Independents

Army:
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army football team returns to the road for the second time in three weeks when the Black Knights travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to battle Atlantic Coast Conference foe Wake Forest on Saturday, Sept. 22. Kickoff from BB&T Field is set for 12:29 p.m.
Wake Forest will host Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, and discounted tickets will be available for any member of the military.
The ACC Network will broadcast Saturday's contest, and ESPN3 will video stream the feed to a national audience. Steve Martin (play by play), Dave Archer (color analyst) and Mike Hogewood (sideline reporter) will call the action for the ACC Network.
The Army Sports Network will have the audio call of the game on its flagship station WABC (770-AM), as well as WALL (1340-AM) and WEOK (1390-AM), and Knight Vision. Brigham Young:
Boise, Idaho • The numbers alone suggest that the odds of the BYU Cougars toppling No. 24-ranked Boise State here on the famed blue turf of Bronco Stadium Thursday night in a nationally televised game on ESPN are about as favorable as BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall and Utah coach Kyle Whittingham breaking bread together after a rivalry game.
Boise State simply does not lose college football games to teams directly south of the Idaho border, and rarely loses games at home.

Navy:
Navy’s football team plays numerous opponents that employ an odd defensive front. Service academy rivals Army and Air Force are among the teams that use a nose guard to cover up the center. So does Virginia Military Institute, which visits Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium this Saturday.
Against such formations, it is important to have a sturdy center that can snap the ball then hold the point of attack against a hard-charging 300-pound nose guard. Tanner Fleming is just the type of player the Navy coaching staff is looking for to play center against alignments that feature three and five down linemen.
