Independent News and Notes: 10/2/12

Army:
WEST POINT – Army senior defensive end Zach Watts has been named one of 147 candidates for the 2012 National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Awards. The list of honorees are also considered semifinalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy which is presented to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete.
Candidates were nominated by their schools, which were limited to one nominee each. In order to be nominated, players must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.

Brigham Young:
Is Ezekiel Ansah turning heads?
Yes.
It's like watching a tennis match.
The senior, come-from-nowhere BYU defensive end is attracting attention. He's getting legitimate looks from NFL scouts. He's no longer just a good story, he's a great story. He's gone from a nifty novelty to a mainstay on one of the nation's top-ranked defenses.
It wasn't supposed to be. I had my doubts in the guy heading into fall camp — that he'd ever become a player or just a guy called Ziggy who looked like he could play but couldn't.

Navy:
Navy is sticking with Trey Miller as its starting quarterback, head coach Ken Niumatalolo announced after practice on Monday.
Niumatalolo admitted following Saturday's 12-0 loss to San Jose State that he and offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper would have to take a long look at whether to make a change at quarterback.
As expected, Niumatalolo and Jasper concluded that giving freshman Keenan Reynolds his first career start in the hostile environment of Falcon Stadium in a heated service academy rivalry game against Air Force was not the best idea.
"Trey’s going to be our quarterback. I still have a ton of faith in Trey. He needs to play better, but I know he can get it done," Niumatalolo said. "He’s our quarterback and he’s the guy we’re going with this week to play against a good Air Force team. I just feel that Trey gives us the best chance to win right now."
