WAC News and Notes: 11/16/12

Idaho:
Senior day couldn't have played out any better for the BYU Cougars as they picked up a 52-13 win over the Idaho Vandals Saturday night. Riley Nelson tossed three touchdowns to go with 236 yards on 19 of 31 passing to spearhead a potent offensive attack that racked up 537 yards of offense. Nelson also picked up 49 yards rushing to add to his scrambling legacy with Cougar fans.
Nelson's early success meant senior James Lark would have a chance to play for the final time in LaVell Edwards Stadium. Lark efficiently ran out the clock to get the Cougars bowl eligible for the the eighth straight year with an invite to the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, Calif. Lark completed six of eleven passes for 49 yards and a touchdown, putting an exclamation point on his career at BYU.
From the oldest 25 year old senior down to the youngest freshman, the Cougar offense was hitting on all cylinders in the frigid November air. Jamaal Williams, the 17 year old from California, looked like a seasoned veteran, carrying the ball 10 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

Louisiana Tech:
9:51AM EST November 13. 2012 - Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes might be keeping close tabs on the BCS standings, but he knows that before making plans for January, the Bulldogs need to take care of business in the Western Athletic Conference.
"I think that if we win out, we'll have a shot," Dykes said of his team's BCS chances. But with Utah State and San Jose State looming, the Bulldogs have another pair of tests to pass on the road to 11-1.
"Our theme has been, 'Let's just go a week at a time,' " Dykes said.
Louisiana Tech, 20th in this week's BCS standings, can earn an automatic at-large bid in one of two ways, but both hinge on the Bulldogs winning the WAC. The BCS excludes non-BCS conference teams that fail to win their own league – though it does not hold that rule against teams in automatic-qualifying conferences, as seen with Alabama a season ago.

New Mexico State:
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – ESPN announced Monday afternoon that the November 24th football game matching the NM State Aggies and the BYU Cougars will be carried on ESPN3, ESPN’s web based programming. The Aggies and Cougars will meet for just the second time, as their first meeting was in 2011, as BYU took the win 42-7, in Provo, Utah. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. (MT) in Aggie Memorial Stadium.

San Jose State:
San Jose State football players David Freeman and Chris Kearney have been suspended for the remainder of the season for undisclosed violation of team policy, Spartans coach Mike MacIntyre said Tuesday.
The players were suspended Friday before the team left on its trip to play New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M., MacIntyre said.
The suspension effectively ends an unsteady college career for Freeman, a senior backup running back.
The Inglewood native went to the University of Washington out of high school and played in four games as a freshman. He transferred to San Jose State and sat out a year under NCAA transfer rules.
The highlight of his sophomore season in 2010 was a 72-yard touchdown run against Idaho, and he played in 10 games, gaining 163 yards on 39 carries.
Freeman began last season as the starting running back and had 52 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts against UCLA. But he later broke his arm and missed the remainder of the season.
He entered this season as a contender for playing time at running back but ended up third on the depth chart behind De'Leon Eskridge and Tyler Ervin. His most extensive playing time came in a 31-20 win over Texas State after Ervin injured his shoulder.

Texas State:
Marcus Curry is still in touch with many of his former Navy football teammates, most of them having moved on to their post-graduate military commitments and a few others who are now finishing their college careers for the Midshipmen.
Curry would have been in the first group, in his second year at Navy flight school in Pensacola, Fla., had he not been kicked off the team in the spring of 2010 for violating team rules. Curry later resigned from the academy and transferred to Texas State that summer.

Utah State:
For the third time in the last four years, Utah State has a football player selected to participate in the Senior Bowl as Will Davis accepted an invitation to play in the annual All-Star game.
The 64th Senior Bowl will be played Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. The game and all practices will be televised by the NFL Network.
Davis is the 17th Utah State player selected to the Senior Bowl since 1962.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Will to showcase his talents in one of the most prestigious all-star games in the country,” coach Gary Andersen said. “Will has done a fantastic job of dedicating himself to the game of football and that commitment has shown through with his performance on the field.

UTSA:
In many ways, the UTSA football program has been built in twos.
You have Cole Hubble and Cole Hicks, two players once known as “Cole Squared” in Bandera.
You have Brandon Reeves and Franky Anaya, two former junior college teammates from Southern California.
You even have Seth and Aaron Grubb, the mighty mite brothers from La Vernia.
Last week, two guys who aren't related, but might as well be, helped the surprising Roadrunners win their sixth game of the year.
Running back Brandon Armstrong and cornerback Crosby Adams, two longtime friends and former teammates from Roosevelt, boosted UTSA to a 31-24 victory over the McNeese State Cowboys.
