Troy University

Type of Offense: Spread.  Zone read running plays and nearly all passing plays from the shotgun formation.  There is rare to no use of a fullback.  Tight End is used primarily as a blocking back (extra OL).  Nearly all runs are made by the RB and QB save the occasional end around with the WR.

Type of Defense: 4-3.  Fast OLBs with the WLB being stronger in pass coverage and the SLB being stouter versus the run.  MLB is balanced and expected to make most of the tackles, especially versus the run game.  A lot of Cover 2 with the MLB expected to get deep (15 yards) on a pass play.  Corners on an island playing the edges with help over top.  Gap responsibilities on the run game with DL and LB filling gaps and DE normally containing on the edge.

·        Run/Pass %: 47/53
·        Run/Pass Attempts: 469/528
·        Points Per Game: 34.1
·        Points Allowed Per Game: 30.2

Key Returning Players:

·        Corey Robinson, QB: As with many of the Troy QBs in the past, Robinson has very high passing totals. With over 3700 yards passing, he has the outside shot at a 4000 yard passing season in 2011.
·        Kyle Wilborn and James Brown, OL: Both of these linemen started all 13 games in 2010 and will be expected to start every game of the 2011 season as well being the foundation of the offensive line.
·        Jonathan Massaquoi, DE: 1st team All-Sun Belt in 2010 in his first year on the team after playing JUCO in 2009. Had over 20 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks in 2010 leading the defense that was ran over.
·        Xavier Lamb LB 5-9 226 Sr. Tallahassee, Fla. / Lincoln HS—Leading returning tackler for the Trojans from 2010. Played and started all 13 games registering 91 tackles and 2 sacks.

Key Incoming Freshmen:
·        Troy is known for grey-shirting incoming freshmen so it is hard to tell which if any of the freshmen will make an impact.

Overall Assessment: Expectations are high every season for the Trojans as they have shared or outright won the Sun Belt in each of the last 5 seasons. Offensively, in averaging 34 points a game in 2010, Troy used the passing game as a weapon. The QB had over 3700 yards passing with over 20 touchdowns. Defensively, it was a mess. Other than Massaquoi’s all conference efforts, the production of the defense was not good at all. Some players must step up and improve significantly if Troy is to continue the dominance of the Sun Belt. Special teams looked well in 2010 with the kicker going 17-22 with a kick over 50 yards as a topper. The punting game was solid as ever with the Trojans emphasizing special teams every year. Overall, anything less than a bowl game and a win in the bowl game is unacceptable for Troy.
