Type of Offense: Pro-Style I. This offense is a run oriented offense that uses run plays and play action to get defenders out of position for passes in the 15-25 yard range. The tight end and fullback are more involved in the offense as the fullback is a blocker and the tight end is 70/30 blocking versus running routes. Most known for the isolation running plays in the middle, the offense has evolved to a more off tackle and “counter trey” running offense. This is more of the style of professional ranks allowing for a QB with a strong arm to thrive.
Type of Defense: 4-3. Fast OLBs with the WLB being stronger in pass coverage and the SLB being stouter versus the run. MLB is balanced and expected to make most of the tackles, especially versus the run game. A lot of Cover 2 with the MLB expected to get deep (15 yards) on a pass play. Corners on an island playing the edges with help over top. Gap responsibilities on the run game with DL and LB filling gaps and DE normally containing on the edge.
· Run/Pass %: 49/51
· Run/Pass Attempts: 414/436
· Points Per Game: 22.3
· Points Allowed Per Game: 37
Key Returning Players
· Aaron Spikes, RB: Was the leading rusher for ULL in 2010 as well as a great pass catcher out of the backfield. More dangerous in the passing game when covered by LB in man coverage.
· Brad McGuire, FB: A player of multiple talents ranging from being a FB/RB in the spread set to taking snaps as a QB with moderate success. Completed over 50% of his pass attempts.
· Ladarius Green, TE: One of the few TEs to have significant statistics from a spread offense, Green is the leading receiver of any sort for ULL. Scored 7 TDs in 10 games played.
· Devon Lewis-Buchanon, LB: Leading returning tackler for the Sun Belt’s worst defense. Had nearly 6 tackles per game from the LB position to go along with 2.5 sacks and 1 INT.
Key Incoming Freshmen:
· Really anyone has the chance to play significant minutes as a freshman for ULL. With the rebuilding effort fully into place, freshmen and JUCOs will be given ample opportunity to succeed.
Overall Assessment: Sadly, a 3-9 record is better than they played throughout the season. ULL sported a -17 point differential in 2010 getting blown out on several occasions. Offensively, it was parts and pieces that were thrown together to attempt to resemble an offense. No one really stood out on offense except for Green at TE who had a very efficient season with 40+ receptions and 7 TDs. Defensively, they gave up very close to 40 points per game. From the beginning, the defense was in shambles and does not look to be improving enough to expect much more. In kicking game, they do not have a punter on the roster so maybe one of the kickers can pull double duty. The FG kicker was spot in going 7-7 in the limited chances he got because of the anemic offense. Overall, this team does not look much better than last season unless some players take major jumps in on field ability.
