MAC, news and notes

News and Notes the week for the MAC:
Ohio
ATHENS, Ohio - The White team defeated the Green Team 15-7 Saturday afternoon at the annual Green and White game Saturday afternoon at Peden Stadium. Saturday afternoon's contest marked the conclusion of spring practice for the Ohio University football team.
The Ohio defensive unit was the story day as it combined for six interceptions and seven sacks. Redshirt freshman Devin Bass (Omaha, Neb.) picked off a game-high two passes, while redshirt junior Nic Barber (Newark, Ohio) and sophomore Tony Davis (Wyoming, Ohio) each had a pair of sacks.
Offensively for the Bobcats, redshirt junior Beau Blankenship (Norman, Okla.) led the way with a game-high 76 yards rushing on just five carries. His biggest run came in the first half as he reeled off a 49-yard rush, which set up a Matt Weller (Twinsburg, Ohio) field goal.
Weller finished the day by going 3-for-5, connecting from 29, 34 and 31 yards out. He also missed from 41 and 33 yards out.

Kent State
Despite the wet conditions and a slow first half, the Gold Team fought back to defeat the Blue Team in Saturday’s Kent State Football Spring Game, 21-0.
With the ball on the Blue Team’s 17-yard-line, junior quarterback David Fisher (Oceanside, Calif.) faked the handoff to senior running back Larry Dawson (Akron, Ohio) and rolled toward his left.  Fisher found sophomore tight end Xavier Douglas (Akron, Ohio) for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 7:28 remaining in the third quarter.
Coming into Saturday’s game, Head Coach Darrell Hazell told Fisher to avoid taking big losses and he would see success on the field.  He was right.  Fisher finished the game completing 7-of-11 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
“We were moving the ball a lot so we knew we could get them with the zones and all of that,” Fisher said. “It feels good to get the ball rolling like that.  I just put it in my head to not take those big losses and manage the game before the snap.”

Bowling Green
Jamel Martin scampered for a 19-yard touchdown with just 3:51 to play as the Orange team came from behind for a 14-13 victory over the White team in the annual Bowling Green State University football spring game on Friday night (April 13).
The run came just minutes after Alex Carter had given White a 13-7 lead with a breakaway 66-yard run.  That play was the White squad's only touchdown of the game and accounted for over a quarter of their 215 yards from scrimmage.
White took an early 3-0 lead on a 29-yard field goal by Tyler Tate as the first quarter drew to a close.  He added a 25-yard boot late in the third quarter.
Those kicks sandwiched a two-yard touchdown pass by Matt Schilz in the second quarter.  The rainbow settled into the hands of wide out Herve Coby in the back-left corner of the end zone and gave Orange a 7-6 halftime lead.
For the game, Schilz was 19/36 for 185 yards, plus one touchdown and no interceptions, as quarterback for the Orange team.  Matt Johnson led the White squad and went 16/30 for 131 yards and an interception.
Martin's 19 yard touchdown run helped him gain 86 yards on 20 carries.  John Pettigrew had 15 carries of his own for 39 yards.

Miami OH

OXFORD, Ohio - Like anxious job applicants, members of Miami University's football squad are excited to begin the last week of their five-week "internship", culminating with their all-important "final interview" at the annual Red & White Game this Saturday (April 28). The scrimmage, free to the general public, begins at 12 noon at Yager Stadium.
Several individuals, such as quarterback Zac Dysert (Ada), receiver Nick Harwell (Missouri City, TX), defensive lineman Austin Brown (Woodbridge, VA) and cornerback Dayonne Nunley (Monroeville, PA), have starting jobs lined up for the 2012 season, but there are many other players who are still scrambling for starting and back-up positions on Miami's two-deep.
Coach Don Treadwell's staff is probably more concerned with completing the tasks that they had penciled in for the spring drills that began on March 26.
"The coordinators and I have a long laundry list of things we need to touch on during the final week of practice," said Treadwell. "We've spent a lot of time staying pretty basic things and slowly adding some wrinkles to an existing concept. We'll continue to work our players hard but, at the same time, add some things that we still need to see offensively, defensively and on special teams."

Buffalo

BUFFALO, NY - Nine members of the incoming 2012 Buffalo football recruiting class will be wrapping up their respective high school careers with a chance to play in state-wide All-Star games.
Of the nine, five players will be participating in the prestigious Eddie Meath All-Star Football Game. Now in its 30th season, the game features the very best players in Western New York. The game will pit "upstate" players against "downstate" players and a few future Bulls will get a chance to play on the same team and meet their future collegiate teammates.
On defense for the upstate team, Corey Madlock (DL - Cleveland Hill, NY) will not be participating in the game but received an invitation after he was named second-team All-WNY as a junior and honorable mention All-State but lost his senior season to injury.
On offense, Jaden Cotton (OL – Depew, NY) - a second-team All-State and All-WNY honoree for Depew High School – will anchor the upstate team's offensive line. Igniting the offense will be a pair of athletes who already have the UB fans excited for their futures. Sweet Home's Jordan Johnson (RB/WR) and Gates-Chili's Marcus McGill (WR) will be leading what should be a high-powered offense. Johnson was the Class-A State Player of the Year as both a junior and senior and a first-team All-WNY and All-State honoree. McGill was a second-team All-State selection and was a three-time All-County selection.

Akron
AKRON, Ohio – Dalton Williams converted 37-of-55 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns as the Gold Team defeated the Blue Team 51-21 in The University of Akron football team's Spring Game on Saturday afternoon at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field.
The Gold Team was comprised of the second team offense and first team defense, while the Blue Team was made up of the first team offense and second team defense.
Williams went 21-of-28 for 223 yards and two TDs as a member of the Gold squad, and completed 16-of-27 attempts for 150 yards for the Blue Team. He also threw a pair of interceptions as a member of the Blue Team. One of those INTs was returned for a touchdown by Bill Alexander during the second quarter.
L.T. Smith, who switched from defense to offense this spring, led all receivers with 13 catches for 107 yards as a member of the Blue Team. Fellow Blue Team wide out Marquelo Suel paced the squad with three touchdowns off five catches for 57 yards. His TDs came off a 20-yard pass from Williams in the first quarter, a 12-yard strike from Kyle Pohl in the second quarter and 22-yard reception from Clayton Moore in the third quarter.
Moore went 17-of-27 for 193 yards and one TD (12-of-15 for 135 yards and one TD for the Gold Team). Pohl went 12-for-20 for 116 yards and one TD. Moore was sacked three times, Pohl twice and Williams once.

Northern Illinois
DeKALB, Ill. - After spending the past two seasons backing up record-setting teammate Chandler Harnish, quarterback Jordan Lynch showed that he plans a seamless transition into the starting role as he threw for 402 yards on 29-of-44 passing with four touchdowns Saturday at Huskie Stadium in Northern Illinois' Red-White Spring Football Game. Lynch led the Red team, composed of the Huskie starting units on offense and defense, to a 31-6 victory over the White team in the final spring football practice of 2012.
NIU Head Coach Dave Doeren, who led the Huskies to an 11-3 record and the school's first Mid-American Conference Championship in 28 years in 2011, said Lynch progressed over the spring and on Saturday as he takes over the offense for 2012.
"I think you'll see a lot of things where he doesn't miss a step," Doeren said. "As a runner, he's probably better [than Chandler]. We didn't let him run today, which is a big part of what he does. It kind of hindered the playcalling for the coordinator when you're telling him [Offensive Coordinator Mike Dunbar] he's not allowed to run the quarterback.
"Jordan threw the ball extremely well and threw some really nice deep balls. He hit Luke Eakes in stride on the wheel route. He hit Akeem [Daniels] in a tight window down the sideline. He threw a back shoulder fade to Martel [Moore]. I think the questions people had about his arm strength were answered very quickly today.

Toledo
TOLEDO, OH - Rocket fans who came to Toledo's spring football game wondering who might replace All-American Eric Page at wide receiver did not have to wait long to get a look at one strong candidate.
Sophomore Dwight Macon, a converted quarterback, took a swing pass from senior quarterback Austin Dantin, dodged a tackler, then sprinted 70 yards down the sideline for the score on the first play of the game. Macon and his Blue teammates defeated the Gold team, 21-13, at the Glass Bowl Friday night.
Macon, who is listed as UT's third-string quarterback, caught seven passes for 114 yards in his debut at his new position. He also played QB in the second half, completing 4-of-5 passes for 31 yards.  Dantin completed 14-of-18 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns for the Blue, while junior running back David Fluellen led the Blue rushers with 75 yards and one TD. Fluellen also stepped in at safety and picked off a pass.
The Gold team was led by junior quarterback Terrance Owens, who threw for 277 yards on 15-of-26 passes. Junior Bernard Reedy was his top target, catching seven passes for 150 yards and one score.
UT head coach Matt Campbell was pleased with the development of Macon and Reedy, both of whom are similar in stature to the 5-10 Page, who opted for the NFL Draft following his junior season. An area of concern could become an area of strength for the Rockets next fall.
The Rockets open their season on Sept. 1 at Arizona.

Ball State
Ball State's football team, under the direction of second-year head coach Pete Lembo, held its annual Spring Game at Scheumann Stadium.  The Cardinal's offense managed a 50-49 victory.
The Cardinals offense and defense competed for four 15-minute quarters with the special teams units conducting drills between quarters.  Ball State used a unique scoring system, which included offensive points for first downs, field goals, touchdowns, extra points and two-point conversions.  The defense was awarded points for drive stops, three and outs, takeaways, touchdowns, extra points and safeties.
"This was a great day for our program," Lembo says.  "I thought the scrimmage was competitive with good balance.  It just seemed like there was a little more energy and explosiveness this year.  The control our quarterbacks took of the offense compared to last year was a real positive.  Our defense managed some great takeaways and we had a much better pass rush."
Steven Schott provided the first big scoring play of the game when he connected on a 19-yard field goal.  A pair of interceptions by Andre Dawson and Kenneth Lee highlighted the first half for the defense.
The second quarter saw the Ball State quarterbacks connect on two long scoring plays.  Kelly Page threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Heard, while Keith Wenning completed a 54-yard pass to Willie Snead.  After the pair of scores, the Cardinal took a 31-22 lead.
Wenning added a 51-yard scoring strike to Jamill Smith in the third quarter to give the Cardinal a 39-22 advantage.
The fourth quarter scoring was highlighted by a 47-year field goal by Schott, which made the score Cardinal 44, White 39.  A series of first down drives in the final series enabled the Cardinal to tally the victory.

Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team put the finishing touches on the 2012 spring drills with the Cueter Chrysler Spring Game Sunday, April 15, in Rynearson Stadium. Despite dodging some early rain drops, the day turned out perfect with the players putting on a hard-hitting exhibition with the offense, in white jerseys, taking on the defense, in black jerseys.
The White Team recorded an 8-7 win in the scoring system that awarded both teams points.
“I loved the offensive line," said fourth-year Head Coach Ron English in his postgame radio interview. "I think we have depth there and I think we are going to be pretty good up front."
The line helped the Eagles' running game account for five touchdowns on the ground, including a pair from sophomores Ryan Brumfield (Chester Springs, Pa.-Owen J. Robert) and Bronson Hill (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Catholic Central). Additionally, sophomore Tyler Allen (Lansing, Mich.-Eastern) electrified the crowd with a kickoff return for a touchdown.
While he was happy with his offense, English was not as thrilled with the effort of his defense.
“The worst thing that I saw today was our eyes on defense," said English. "The defensive front is coming along, the linebackers are decent, the safety position ... we have a long way to go.”

Central Michigan
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Additional student seating at Kelly/Shorts Stadium will be added this fall due to the high demand for tickets to the seven-game home football schedule, and student ticket procedures for the Michigan State game have been finalized.
Central Michigan University students will still get into all games free of charge this fall, but will need to reserve a ticket in advance for the September 8 game against Michigan State. With the addition of 2,000 seats to the current student section, 10,000 students will be admitted, creating the single largest group of ticket-holders in the stadium. Students will comprise one-third of a capacity crowd.
"We saw a growing demand and we are thrilled that we can accommodate our student body's interest with the additional seats. They are such an important part of our atmosphere. Based on the feedback we've heard we expect the tickets to go extremely fast," said Director of Athletics Dave Heeke.
The free tickets may be reserved at two events this fall, according to a committee of campus student leaders that finalized ticketing procedures last week. At either MAINstage, Sunday, Aug. 26, or the first football game, Thursday, Aug. 30, current CMU students may show a valid CMU ID to reserve a ticket. An e-mail confirmation will be sent showing that the ticket was loaded onto his/her ID card. That card must then be scanned at the Kelly/Shorts Stadium gate for entry into the game on Saturday, Sept. 8.
The preloaded ticket procedure will only be in place for the Michigan State game. Entry to all other games will be by scanning a valid student ID card at the gate.
