WAC, News and Notes

News and Notes for 4/23/12:

Louisiana Tech:
RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech's 2013 non-conference football game at Rice has been postponed and will be moved to a future date to be determined.
The two schools agreed to postpone the game in order to help Rice extend its rivalry game against Houston. That rivalry game, called the "Bayou Bucket," becomes a non-conference game for the two schools as Houston moves to the Big East Conference that year. Houston and Rice have met on the gridiron every year since 1971 with the exception of three times (1996-98, interrupted by the demise of the Southwest Conference).
Currently Louisiana Tech's 2013 schedule includes games at Houston (Sept. 7), against Southern Miss (Sept. 14), at Kansas (Sept. 21), against Army (Sept. 28) and a home game against Lamar on a date to be determined. Rice and Tech were previously scheduled to play on Aug. 31 in Houston.

Idaho:
MOSCOW, Idaho – It is possible for a football coach to be happy after watching his team scrimmage. That was true for Idaho’s Robb Akey after Friday night’s spring finale with the Silver and Gold Scrimmage at the Kibbie Dome.
“I thought it was a good scrimmage,” Akey said. “I wanted to see some guys make plays. I think we did tonight.”
He was able to be happy because it was both sides of the ball making the plays. Senior receiver Daniel Micheletti hooked up with Dominique Blackman for a 69-yard TD for an offensive highlight. On the flipside, Quinton Bradley and Solomon Dixon nabbed interceptions to find their way onto the highlight reel and Su`a Tuala was a one-men wrecking crew with nine tackles, which includes three sacks.
After a three-and-out on the first offensive possession, the offense hit paydirt with a three-play drive that led to the Blackman-to-Micheletti TD. The offense continued to make headway on future drives but didn’t find its way into the endzone again. Instead, it relied on the reliable Trey Farquhar, who was good on field goals of 17, 27, 28, 39 and 44 yards.

San Jose State:
Harrison Waid kicked a 42-yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter giving the White a 17-14 win over the Blue in San Jose State University's annual Spring Football Game.
In the split-squad game in which the seniors decided the sides, the White scored all 10 second-half points for the win. Ben Thompson, the game's leading rusher with 39 yards on six carries, tied the game at 14-14 with a 25-yard run prior to Waid's field goal. Wide receiver Noel Grigsby and quarterback David Fales opened the game's scoring on a 37-yard touchdown play in the first quarter.
The Blue team scored both its touchdowns on the ground. Junior Jason Simpson scored from the 4-yard line and senior Ina Liaina added a 2-yard touchdown run for the Blue scores.

Utah State:
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's football team will hold its second scrimmage of spring camp on Friday, April 20 from 5:20 to 6:30 p.m., on Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium. Admission to the scrimmage is free.
"We wanted to give fans the best opportunity to come out and watch us scrimmage. It is supposed to be a good weather and we'd love to have all our great fans be there enjoying a nice evening of spring football," USU head coach Gary Andersen said.
Utah State's scrimmage on Friday will be its 12th of 15 practices during spring camp and Andersen is pleased with the progress his team has made thus far.
"It's been very competitive. One of the major goals we have is to create competition at every spot in spring and I think we've accomplished that goal. You always wonder about the new leaders and the key guys that you lost, and initially there was a little bit of a shock factor with not having Robert (Turbin) and Michael (Smith), not having Bobby (Wagner) and Kyle (Gallagher), and the list goes on and on. I think by each position group they've grown into their 2012 mindset and they've got their own identity, which is good," said Andersen.

Texas State:
San Marcos, Texas- Texas State football players Joey Simone and Matt Freeman set a pair of school records to highlight the team's inaugural “Night of Champions” at Bobcat Stadium on Thursday evening.
“I think we exceeded everybody's expectations tonight,” said head strength and conditioning coach Blake Cundiff. “I set the bar really high really high for them. Then, they exceeded my expectations.”
Simone and Charlie Will Tuttle both eclipsed the previous school record that was set by Donavan King in 2008 when they lifted 373 pounds in the hang clean. Then, Simone won the contest when he lifted 377 pounds before finishing the night lifting 380 pounds to set one school record.
Matt Freeman set the other school record when he lifted 425 pounds on the incline bench press to edge Zach Crawford and Prestin Brown, who both finished the night with a lifts of 405 pounds.
In the squat lift, Jeff Clermond, Devin Baker and Chris Nutall all lifted 700 pounds. They came within another 10 pounds of tying another school record that was set by junior nose tackle Deshun Williams in 2011.

UTSA:
SAN ANTONIO — A trio of quarterbacks combined to go 26-for-40 for 318 yards and a touchdown and the White team held off the Blue squad, 44-42, in the second annual UTSA Football Fiesta Spring Game presented by Health Texas on Sunday before 4,736 fans at the Alamodome.
Junior Eric Soza went 6-of-8 for 101 yards, classmate Tucker Carter was 11-of-19 for 121 and redshirt freshman Ryan Polite completed 9-of-13 for 96 yards to help the White (offense) rack up 363 yards through the air and 488 of total offense. Thirteen different players caught a pass, led by sophomore Josiah Monroe’s six for 60 yards. Sophomore Seth Grubb hauled in five for 49, while fellow soph Marcellus Mack grabbed four for a team-high 68 yards.
Sophomore David Glasco II led a ground attack that rushed for 125 yards and a score with 58 on 11 carries, while junior Evans Okotcha compiled 27 yards and a TD on nine totes.
