BALL STATE
The team practiced in shoulder pads and helmets as opposed to full pads. What was the reasoning?
We go in uppers or half pads for several reasons. First of all, we have to have a number of practices in the spring where there is no live scrimmaging as per NCAA regulations. Today's session met one of those requirements. We have a pretty quick turnaround with a morning practice tomorrow, so we wanted to go a little lighter today, knowing we will do some live work on Saturday morning. Perhaps most importantly, we work very hard at teaching our guys to play at full speed, but to stay up off the ground. This is the best way to replicate game speed, but to avoid injury. We call that "thud" tempo and we should be able to execute in that mode whether we are in full pads or uppers.
Your offensive line is a pretty veteran group. You have made some position switches with that group. How are they progressing?
I have been pleased with the offensive line so far this spring. They are an experienced group and, as we previously discussed, they are adapting very well to Coach Tabacca's teaching style. The major move we made was to bump Dan Manick to center. Dan has embraced the change and is getting better every day. He has occasionally drifted some of his shotgun snaps, but again, he's getting better and more comfortable. Guard Jordan Hansel has been limited this spring due to the fibula injury he suffered last fall. We are very pleased with the job Chris Sparrow is doing filling in for Jordan. Chris started the last four games in 2011 and continues to improve. Cameron Lowry is having a really good spring. The game has really slowed down for him. The same is true for Kitt O'Brien. He is playing with more detail than he did last fall. Some younger guys in the two deep like Jalen Schlachter and Matthew Page are also making progress.

BUFFALO
The University at Buffalo football team continued its spring drills Saturday morning with a scrimmage at UB Stadium. The morning was full of energy, hard hits, great catches and was dominated early and often by the Bulls' defense.
First-year head coach Jeff Quinn had mixed feelings about today’s scrimmage.
“The defense played with great energy and enthusiasm, they flew around and made some good plays. The offense wasn’t anywhere where we needed to be, very inconsistent, that’s something we need to clean up as coaches. The most important thing right now is that we develop as a team, and come out here, practice hard and make each other better so at the end of the day we are ready to compete at the highest level.”

CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Central Michigan held its final dress rehearsal prior to the 2012 spring football game on Thursday.
The Chippewas conducted an intrasquad scrimmage of about 100 plays during Thursday's practice, the final extended full-contact 11-on-11 session the team will have prior to next Saturday's spring game.
The CMU Sports Zone caught up with head coach Dan Enos following Thursday's practice to get his thoughts on the scrimmage as well as which players have emerged as leaders during spring camp.
CMU's spring football game is now less than 10 days away. Kickoff of the spring game is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas' players and coaches will host a free youth skills clinic before the game beginning at 11:30 a.m. Clinic registration and an autograph session with the CMU players begins at 10:30 a.m.

EASTERN MICHIGAN
The Eastern Michigan University football team turned in another hard-hitting day of practice Thursday, April 5, on the artificial turf inside the Indoor Practice Facility. The 11th practice of spring camp featured individual skill development along with segments of team tackle, goal line, 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.
Following the afternoon session Head Coach Ron English chatted with Eagle All-Access' Greg Steiner with an update on the team's progress this spring.
The Eagles return to the field just three more times before the annual spring game which is scheduled for Sunday, April 15, at 2 p.m. inside Rynearson Stadium. Admission is free as gates open at 1 p.m. This will be fans first chance to get a peek at the Eagles in 2012.

KENT STATE

Head Coach Darrell Hazell called Day 4 “The best practice yet.”  Kent State football players were in full pads for the first time Monday morning and three officials were on hand for game scenarios.
In his recent MAC Football Spring Preview, Parker Perry of HustleBelt.com says: “Darrell Hazell quietly has his program to the point where it will be realistically competing for its best season in program history.”
