Once thought to be a done deal, the Mountain West-Conference USA merger seems to be in trouble. According to a report from CBSSPORTS.com, the merger of the two conferences seems unlikely.
Right now, there are the MAC, Sun Belt, WAC, MWC, Conference USA and the independent. The main reason for the merger was the stem the negative tide of the defections of TCU, Boicse, UCF, SMU, Houston, and more in the next few years. The non-big 6 conferences must work together but many are looking to add new members.
The MAC is looking to add one more school after losing Temple but adding UMass putting their number at 13 teams. The Sun Belt is looking to add one more team as South Alabama and Georgia State are joining bringing the number to 11 teams. The WAC is no where near the 12 teams needed to form a conference title game even after bringing UTSA and Texas State into the mix.
More information will be known in june as the MWC and Conference USA commishioners have said a decision will be made by then.
