Fall Preview: Central Michigan

Fall Preview for the Central Michigan Chippewas:

QB
#08   Radcliff, Ryan QB 6-3 215 Sr. Sherwood, Ohio (Fairview HS)--12 games played. 257-453 passing for 3286 yards and 25 TD. 1 tackle.
#12   Westendorp, A.J. QB 6-1 229 Jr. Holland, Mich. (Holland Christian HS)--3 games played. 3 carries for 25 yards. 1-4 passing for 4 yards.
#02   Niznak, Alex QB 6-3 225 R-Fr. Ithaca, Mich. (Ithaca HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#07   Kater, Cody QB 6-3 230 So. Montague, Mich. (Grand Rapids CC)--No stats in 2011.
#??   Rush, Cooper QB 6-3 220 Fr. Charlotte, Mich. (Lansing Catholic HS)--Incoming freshman.

Senior Ryan Radcliff leads the offense from the quarterback spot after a very impressive season that saw him throw for over 3200 yards and connect for 25 TD. Junior AJ Westendorp and redshirt freshman Alex Niznak look to battle for the backup job with Westendorp having the advantage. Cody Kater and incoming freshman Cooper Rush look to be too far down the depth chart to make any significant impact this fall.

RB
#44   Garland, Anthony RB 6-0 220 So. Ferndale, Mich. (Ferndale HS)--8 games played. 83 carries for 378 yards and 1 TD. 2 tackles.
#34   Tipton, Zurlon RB 6-1 222 Jr. Detroit, Mich. (Parkway Christian HS)--7 games plated. 79 carries for 370 yards and 2 TD. 17 catches for 124 yards. 5 kickoff returns for 25 yard average.
#05   Phillips, Tim RB 5-5 166 Jr. Louisville, Ky. (Trinity HS)--7 games played. 54 carries for 214 yards and 1 TD. 10 catches for 80 yards. 3 kickoff returns for 20.7 yard average. 2 tackles.
#11   Wimberly, Denzel RB 5-10 201 R-Fr. Pompano Beach, Fla. (Cardinal Gibbons HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??   Lavallii, Saylor RB 5-9 210 Fr. Mason, Mich. (Mason HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Walker, Martez RB 5-9 195 Fr. Orland Park, Ill. (Brother Rice HS)--Incoming freshman.

The rushing attack for the Chippewas was disappointing in 2011 and no one really stood out as the go to back last season. Going into 2012, sophomore Anthony Garland and juniors Zurlon Tipton and Tim Phillips all look to split carries and see who takes the starting job by force as the season progresses. Dont count out redshirt freshman Denzel Wimberly or true freshmen Saylor Lavallii and Martez Walker and their ability to move up the depth chart. The job is open for the taker and it is possible to see a freshman see significant time in the fall.

FB
#42   Lombardo, Tyler FB 6-1 245 Jr. Harrison Township, Mich. (L'Anse Creuse HS)--12 games played. 7 catches for 33 yards.
#49   Fenton, Adam FB 6-2 240 Jr. Birmingham, Mich. (Seaholm HS)--6 games played. 1 catch for 5 yards.
#30   Masztak, Ben FB 6-1 213 Jr. Paw Paw, Mich. (Paw Paw HS)--No stats in 2011.
#37   Conley, Christian FB 5-10 226 R-Fr. Troy, Mich (Athens HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#39   Cook, Jadon FB 6-0 194 R-Fr. Harper Woods, Mich. (Grosse Pointe North HS)--Redshirted in 2011.

With juniors Tyler Lombardo and Adam Fenton being the only fullbacks with any playing time in 2011, look for the two to compete for the starting job with Lombardo holding the advantage. Both will get significant playing time and have the ability to make some catches out of the backfield. Redshirt freshmen Christian Conley and Jadon Cook could be wild cards but may make more of an impact on special teams in 2012.

TE
#47   Southworth, Caleb TE 6-5 228 So. Piketon, Ohio (Piketon HS)--12 games played. 10 catches for 109 yards. 1 kickoff return for 2 yards.
#89   Odykirk, Connor TE 6-4 237 Jr. Mount Pleasant, Mich. (Mount Pleasant HS)--12 games played. 9 catches for 106 yards. 3 tackles.
#85   Fleming, Jarrett TE 6-5 248 So. South Bend, Ind. (Washington HS)--12 games played. 4 catches for 45 yards.
#83   McCord, Ben TE 6-3 224 R-Fr. Warren, Mich. (Cousino HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#48   Randle, Ben TE 6-5 257 R-Fr. Rodney, Mich. (Big Rapids HS)--Redshirted in 2011.

Sophomores Caleb Southworth and Jarrett Fleming look to battle junior Connor Odykirk for playing time this fall for the Chippewa offense. All three had caches with Odykirk showing more break out ability as well as talent on special teams. Any of the three could start but all will play in 2012. Redshirt freshmen Ben McCord and Ben Randle have the chance to show their worth on special teams and move themselves up the depth chart as the season progresses.

WR
#11   Wilson, Cody WR 5-10 189 Sr. Rochester Hills, Mich. (Rochester Adams HS)--10 games played. 2 carries for 11 yards. 48 catches for 526 yards and 3 TD. 9 punt returns for 5.2 yard average. 4 games played.
#84   Davis, Titus WR 6-2 185 So. Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS)--12 games played. 2 carries for 13 yards. 40 catches for 751 yards and 8 TD. 18 kickoff returns for 21.5 yard average. 5 tackles.
#25   Williams, Courtney WR 6-1 205 So. Melvindale, Mich. (Melvindale HS)--6 games played. 21 catches for 385 yards and 5 TD. 7 kickoff returns for 18.4 yard average. 3 tackles.
#14   Wilson, Jason WR 6-0 172 So. Farmington Hills, Mich. (Farmington HS)--12 games played. 9 catches for 106 yards. 14 kickoff returns for 19.3 yard average. 5 tackles.
#15   Butler, Deon WR 6-3 211 So. Detroit, Mich. (Inkster HS)--12 games played. 6 catches for 49 yards. 4 tackles.
#81   Harris, Jerry WR 6-3 185 Sr. Delray Beach, Fla. (Boca Raton HS)--12 games played. 22 catches for 253 yards and 2 TD. 12 kickoff returns for 17.9 yard average.
#21   McConnell, Jordan WR 5-11 191 Jr. Clare, Mich. (Clare HS)--4 games played. 3 tackles.
#17   Mershman, D.J. WR 5-10 180 So. Sterling Heights, Mich. (Stevenson HS)--No stats in 2011.
#88   Kroll, Jesse WR 6-3 201 R-Fr. Algoma, Wis. (Algoma HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#09   Flory, Andrew WR 6-0 180 R-Fr. Miramar, Fla. (American Heritage Plantation)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??   Hansen, Ryan WR 6-3 180 Fr. Dearborn, Mich. (Dearborn HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Rice, Anthony WR 6-0 175 Fr. Mishawaka, Ind. (Marian HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Odykirk, Colton WR/DB 6-2 200 Fr. Mount Pleasant, Mich. (Mount Pleasant HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Scarcelli, Anthony WR/DB 6-0 185 Fr. Marine City, Mich. (Marine City HS)--Incoming freshman.

Wilson, Davis and Williams look to add on to a 2011 season that saw the three receivers combine for 109 catchs and 16 touchdowns. Davis is the explosive one with nearly 19 yards per catch in 2011. Sophomores Jason Wilson and Deon Butler as well as senior Jerry Harris all look to be in the wide receiver rotation this fall for the Chippewas. There are 6 redshirt and true freshman wide receivers on the roster that could work themselves into the rotation with a strong summer and early fall camp.

OL
#79   Fisher, Eric T 6-8 305 Sr. Rochester, Mich. (Stoney Creek HS)
#73   Olson, Jake T 6-8 300 Sr. Hartford, Wis. (Hartford Union HS)--9 games played. 1 tackle.

#31   McClendon, Kenny DE 6-2 250 Jr. St. Louis, Mo. (De Smet Jesuit HS)--12 games played. 17 tackles, 2.5 for loss. 1.5 sacks.
#93   Kinville, Joe DL 6-4 260 Sr. Northville, Mich. (Detroit Catholic Central HS)--12 games played. 15 tackles, 0.5 for loss.
#58   Walton, Leterrius DL 6-6 308 So. Clinton Township, Mich. (Clintondale HS)--4 games played. 7 tackles, 2 for loss. 0.5 sacks.
#69   Williams, Nate DL 6-2 275 Sr. New Haven, Mich. (Indiana State)--3 games played. 1 tackle.
#91   Russo, Matt DE 6-5 212 So. Caledonia, Mich. (Caledonia HS)--No stats in 2011.
#46   Serpa, Blake DE 6-3 238 R-Fr. Sugar Grove, Ill. (Kaneland HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#95   Johnson, Shafer DL 6-0 322 R-Fr. Southfield, Mich. (Southfield Christian HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??   Dean, Jabari DL 6-2 290 Fr. Detroit, Mich. (Renaissance HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Jorde, Mike DL 6-5 250 Fr. Croswell, Mich. (Croswell-Lexington HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Latta, Kelby DL 6-4 305 Fr. Battle Creek, Mich. (Harper Creek HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Sanders, Lance DL 6-4 270 Fr. Chicago, Ill. (Leo HS)--Incoming freshman.

Seniors Caesar Rodriguez, Darryll Stinson, and Stever Winston flank sophomore Matt Losiniecki on the Chippewa defensive line that saw 7 returning players have 15 or more tackles in 2011. Chris Reeves, Kenny McClendon, Joe Kinville, and Leterrius Walton are the backups with 15+ tackles that will be in the rotation this fall on the defensive line. There are 4 true freshmen that will most likely be redshirted and given an important year of experience although Kelby Latta and Jabari Dean are already big enough to play on the college level and could be pressed into action.

LB
#26   Benton, Shamari LB 6-0 220 Jr. Detroit, Mich. (Brother Rice HS)--9 games played. 58 tackles, 3.5 for loss. 1 pbu.
#51   Lopez, Cody LB 6-1 218 So. Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield North HS)--10 games played. 58 tackles, 3 for loss.
#59   Cherocci, Justin LB 6-1 232 So. Rochester Hills, Mich. (Brother Rice HS)--10 games played. 29 tackles, 1 for loss. 1 pbu.
#35   Kinville, Mike LB 6-2 236 So. Northville, Mich. (Detroit Catholic Central HS)--12 games played. 15 tackles, 0.5 for loss.
#22   Petro, Ryan LB 6-0 218 So. Winter Springs, Fla. (Winter Springs HS)--9 games played. 14 tackles.
#32   Smith, Alex LB 6-3 236 Sr. Barrington, Ill. (Barrington HS)--9 games played. 14 tackles, 1.5 for loss.
#38   Johnson, Jason LB 6-0 209 Jr. Durand, Mich. (Durand HS)--No stats in 2011.
#43   Hamilton, Tim LB 6-1 241 R-Fr. Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (Brother Rice HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??   Ricketts, Nathan LB 6-2 220 Fr. Holland, Mich. (Holland HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Bacci, Joe LB 6-2 230 Fr. Romeo, Mich. (Romeo HS)--Incoming freshman.

With 6 linebackers that have 14 or more tackles in 2011, the Chippewa linebacker corps could be better but look to be much improved with 4 of those 6 players getting significant playing time as true freshmen. Junior Shamari Benton leads the group with 58 tackles in just 9 games tied with Cody Lopez (one of the freshmen) who added 58 tackles as well. Look for the incoming freshmen to be redshirted since the rest of the linebackers are so young and still improving.

DB
#04   Addae, Jahleel S 5-11 195 Sr. Valrico, Fla. (Riverview HS)--12 games played. 107 tackles, 4 for loss. 4 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, 1 forced fumble. 1 defensive touchdown.
#36   Cunningham, Avery DB 6-0 201 Jr. Cincinnati, Ohio (Winton Woods HS)--12 games played. 79 tackles, 1 for loss. 4 pbu.
#29   Chapman, Jarret DB 5-11 182 So. Port Huron, Mich. (Port Huron HS)--9 games played. 11 tackles.
#24   Eaddy, Leron DB 5-10 195 Jr. Clarksville, Md. (River Hill HS)--12 games played. 16 tackles. 1 interception, 1 forced fumble.
#10   King, Kevin DB 5-10 191 So. Dearborn, Mich. (Edsel Ford HS)--12 games played. 6 tackles. 1 punt return for 30 yards.
#28   Nalor, Dennis DB 6-0 178 So. Miami, Fla. (Miami Central HS)--11 games played. 23 tackle, 1.5 for loss. 2 pbu.
#17   Smith, Kyle DB 6-3 203 So. Leola, Pa. (Lancaster Catholic HS)--4 games played. 1 tackle.
#02   White, Lorenzo DB 6-0 180 Sr. Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Dillard HS)--11 games played. 41 tackles. 3 pbu.
#47   Lathers, Mark DB 6-0 180 So. Grass Lake, Mich. (Lumen Christi HS)--No stats in 2011.
#16   Armstead, Stefon DB 5-11 169 R-Fr. Southfield, Mich. (Southfield Lathrup HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#07   Oruche, Ryan DB 5-11 188 R-Fr. Downers Grove, Ill. (Downers Grove South HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??   Fields, Jordan DB 6-0 180 Fr. Grand Blanc, Mich. (Grand Blanc HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Frazier, Kavon DB 6-2 205 Fr. Grand Rapids, Mich. (Grand Rapids Christian HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Greer, Brandon DB 6-1 205 Fr. Dolton, Ill. (Mount Carmel HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Chapman, Winslow DB 5-11 190 Fr. Port Huron, Mich. (Port Huron HS)--Incoming freshman.
#??   Annese, Tony DB 6-2 205 Fr. Hartland, Mich. (Rochester Adams HS)--Incoming freshman.

The only given for the Chippewa secondary this fall is that senior Jaheel Addae and junior Avery Cunningham will be in the starting lineup. Addae leads all returning players with 107 tackles in 2011 followed by Cunningham with 79. These two are the best defensive players for the Chippewas and must play just as good in 2012 but make even more game changing plays for this inexperienced secondary to survive the passing attacks of the MAC. Any combination of Chapman, Eaddy, King, Nalor, Smith, White Armstead, or Oruche could get into the defensive rotation or contribute on special teams and step up to take some pressure off of Addae and Cunningham.

P
#13   Hogan, Richie K 6-2 203 Jr. Laguna Hills, Calif. (Laguna Hills HS)--12 games played. 64 punts for 39.4 yard average with 18 inside the 20 yard line. 1 kickoff with 0 touchbacks. 1 carry for -10 yards.
#19   Huge, Curtis P 6-1 186 Sr. Bakersfield, Calif. (Bakersfield College)--No stats in 2011.

Junior Richie Hogan had a solid 2011 season with a 39.4 yard punt average including 18 punts landing inside the opponent 20 yard line. He needs to jump that average up to 42 or 43 yards and the Chippewas will be very happy in 2012.

LS
#92   Zenk, Mike LS 6-3 260 R-Fr. Toledo, Ohio (Central Catholic HS)--Redshirted in 2011.

With the previous long snapper graduating, it is time for redshirt freshman Mike Zenk to step up and make the snaps for the kicking game. His position is very important to give Zenk the chance to get punts off and Harman the chance to equal  if not improve 2011's totals.

K
#96   Harman, David K 6-0 182 Sr. Traverse City, Mich. (Traverse City Central HS)--12 games played. 1 tackle. 13-16 field goals. Long of 45 yards. 30 kickoffs with 3 touchbacks. 32-32 extra points.
#37   Gagnon, Connor K 6-1 191 Jr. Midland, Mich. (Midland HS)--7 games played. 1 tackle. 26 kickoffs with 7 touchbacks.
#??   Coluzzi, Ron K 5-11 180 Fr. Naperville, Ill. (Naperville North HS)--Incoming freshman.

Senior David Harman looked great in 2011 with connecting on 13-15 field goals and all 32 extra point attempts last season. His long of the season was a solid 45 yards. Harman also kicked 10% of his kickoffs for touchbacks. Junior Connor Gagnon found a niche for the Chippewas as the kick off specialist. In his 26 kickoffs, the junior landed 7 for touchbacks giving him a 27% touchback rate which could jump to 40-45% with the new kickoff rules.

Overall, Central Michigan must avoid the 3 game losing streaks that plagued them in 2011. The Chippewas' 9 losses came on 3 separate 3 game losing streaks that killed their 2011 season. With a slightly ambitious non-conference schedule that includes Southeast Missouri State, Michigan State, Iowa and Navy, the best case scenario for non-conference is 2-2 with 1-3 much more likely. With trips to NIU and Toledo sandwiched between the non-conference games, a 2-4 record may be cause for celebration for the Chippewas with the final 6 conference games all winnable and 4 of those 6 games at home. Expect 4 wins for the Chippewas but a much more competitive team this fall.
