Fall Preview: SDSU

Fall Preview for the San Diego State Aztecs:

QB
#05 Ryan Katz 6-1/200 Quarterback SR Santa Monica, Calif. (Oregon State)--No stats in 2011.
#06 Adam Dingwell 6-4/205 Quarterback SO Rockwall, Texas (Rockwall High)--3 games played. 0-1 passing.
#12 Jake Bernards 6-5/225 Quarterback JR Valencia, Calif. (West Ranch High)--No stats in 2011.

#11 Matt Morin 6-2/220 Quarterback FR Temecula Calif. (Chaparral High)--Incoming freshman.

With the loss of Ryan Lindley to the NFL, the quarterback position is an open race to see who will be the starter on September 1st for the season opener versus Washington. Oregon State transfer Ryan Katz looks be the clubhouse leader following spring practice although sophomore Adam Dingwell looks to press Katz for playing time this fall. Redshirt freshman Chad Jeffries and jnuior Jake Bernards look to be too far down the depth chart to make an impact barring injuries.

RB
#39 Adam Muema 5-10/190 Running Back SO Covina, Calif. (Charter Oak High)--6 games played. 42 carries for 253 yards and 3 TD. 2 catches for 3 yards and 1 TD.

#?? Alex Howard 6-0/195 RB FR Gilbert, AZ Williams Field--Incoming freshman.

Similar to the situation with quarterback Ryan Lindley, the Aztecs have to replace alot of offense in losing running back Ronnie Hillman to the NFL. Sophomore Adam Muema looks to be the projected starter in 2012 after gaining 253 yards in 2011. Senior Walter Kazee looks to push Muema for the job and is the leading returning rusher with 339 yards on the ground in 2011. There could be a surprise with 4 redshirt freshmen (Price, Wright, Hardwick, Garrett) getting to compete for playing time as well.

FB
#40 Chad Young 5-11/225 Fullback JR La Verne, Calif. (Glendora High)--13 games played. 16 carries for 43 yards and 2 TD. 11 catches for 63 yards and 1 TD. 1 kickoff return for 4 yards. 5 tackles.
#50 Chris Gordert 6-0/225 Fullback SR Honolulu, Hawaii (Mira Mesa (Calif.) High)--5 games played. 1 tackle.

Junior Chad Young is the returning starter at fullback after a 2011 season that saw him score three touchdowns for the Aztec offense. Senior Chris Gordert is the backup and looks to make more of an impact for the Aztecs on special teams rather than on offense in 2012.

TE
#88 Gavin Escobar 6-6/245 Tight End JR Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. (Santa Margarita Catholic High)--13 games played. 51 catches for 780 yards and 7 TD.

#87 Aaron Boesch 6-5/230 Tight End SO Oak Harbor, Wash. (Santa Monica College)--JUCO transfer.
#46 Robert Craighead 6-3/235 Tight End FR Lakeside, Calif. (El Capitan High)--Incoming freshman.

Junior tight end Gavin Escobar had an impressive 51 catches in 2011 with 7 touchdowns and looks to keep those numbers climbing in 2012 in his second year as the unquestioned starter at tight end for San Diego State. Adam Roberts is the only other tight end with any real experience and may expand his role in 2012. Shields, Boesch and Craighead will all work to get into the rotation for the Aztecs behind Excobar and Roberts.

WR
#24 Colin Lockett 6-0/175 Wide Receiver JR Diamond Bar, Calif. (Diamond Bar High)--13 games played. 7 carries for 96 yards. 58 catches for 970 yards and 8 TD. 31 kickoff returns for 21.9 yard average and 1 TD. 1 tackle.

#?? Eric Judge 6-1/180 WR FR San Diego, CA San Diego--Incoming freshman.
#?? Lloyd Mills 5-9 150 WR FR Chandler, AZ Chandler--Incoming Freshman.

The offense finally sees a little experience on the outside with juniors Colin Lockett and Dylan Denso returning to start for the Aztecs in 2012. Lockett nearly had 1000 yards receiving in 2011 and 96 yards rushing. Denso added 49 catches and 3 touchdowns. The only other player with any catches in 2011 was junior Osmond Nicholas who is currently third team on the depth chart. With 6 players that are either redshirt or true freshmen, one of those are destined to break through and get some playing time in 2012 for the Aztecs.

#?? Teddy Queen 6-2 235 DE FR Temecula, CA Chaparral--Incoming Freshman.

In San Diego State's 3-3-5 defense, the projected starters have the same issue as much of the offense. There is virtually no experience. Sophomores Cody Galea and Sam Meredith played in 9 and 12 games respectively as true freshmen but only combined for 10 tackles on the season. Senior defensive end Frederick Trukilo had 5 tackles in 3 games played in 2011. Beed, Thomas, Hokoian, Sanchez, and Onuoha all look to work themselves into the rotation and gain experience for the future.

LB
#36 Nick Tenhaeff 6-2/225 Linebacker JR Atascadero, Calif. (Atascadero High)--No stats in 2011.
#48 Josh Gavert 6-2/210 Linebacker SO Lakewood, Calif. (Mayfair High)-13 games played. 8 tackles, 2 for loss. 2 sacks.

#?? Derek Largent 6-3/235 LB Torrance, CA El Camino C.C.--JUCO Transfer.

Again, littered with young and inexperienced players, the Aztec linebacker corps only has one starter that is destined to be the starter in on September 1st. Sophomore Jake Fely had an impressive 58 tackles as a true freshman. Projected outside linebacker starters Tenhaeff and Gavert combined for a paltry 8 tackles in 2011. Feaster, Harris, and  Andrews all look to get in the rotation or possibly move into starting roles in 2012.

#?? Damontae Kazee 5-11/170 DB FR San Bernardino, CA Cajon--Incoming Freshman.

In the 3-3-5 defense of the Aztecs, the secondary is the most experienced with 4 of the 5 defensive backs playing significant minutes in 2011. Seniors Leon McFadden and Josh Wade look to be the starter at cornerback with McFadden making 46 tackles and 2 interceptions. The three safeties (Berhe, Siluano, and Pinkins) combined to make 125 tackles and 2 interceptions to go along with 2 forced fumbles. Romain, Keels, Lemon, Guillory, Andrews and Holder should work themselves into the defensive rotation with Lemon and Andrews both having 20+ tackles in 2011.

K
#49 Wes Feer 5-11/195 Kicker/Punter JR Chino Hills, Calif. (Riverside Community College)--JUCO transfer.
#43 Chance Marden 6-1/175 Kicker SR Fremont, Calif. (Washington High)--No stats in 2011.
#?? Seamus McMorrow 6-0/205 K FR San Diego, CA St. Augustine--Incoming Freshman.

Junior Wes Feer looks to be the projected kicker for the Aztecs in 2012 after San Diego State lost their previous kicker to graduation. Senior Chance Marden and freshman Saemus McMorrow look to get into the game but will have a hard time overtaking Feer for the job.

P
#77 Joel Alesi 6-0/240 Punter SO El Cajon, Calif. (Christian High)--No stats in 2011.
#49 Wes Feer 5-11/195 Kicker/Punter JR Chino Hills, Calif. (Riverside Community College)--JUCO transfer.

Sophomore Joel Alesi is the projected starter and only true punter on the roster for the Aztecs. Kicker Wes Feer is currently the backup but the Aztec coaching staff would prefer for Feer to focus on field goals and not have to worry about punting in 2012.

LS
#62 Brandon Koletsky 6-2/225 Long Snapper SO Encino, Calif. (Campbell Hall High)--No stats in 2011.

Sophomore Brandon Koletsky will be the snapper in 2012 after learning on the job as a true freshman in 2011. No one else is listed on the depth chart so barring injury, Koletsky will be the snapper in 2012.

ATH
#?? Kendrick Mathis 6-1/185 ATH FR Ventura, CA Buena--Incoming Freshman.

2011 was the year that everyone was expecting big things out of San Diego State with a large group of seniors that were ready to make a big splash across the country. Things didnt work out with the Aztecs finishing 8-5 with a bowl game loss to Sun Belt foe ULL. 2012 sees the Aztecs with a much easier non-conference schedule (at Washington, Army, North Dakota, San Jose State) that will better complement their very young and inexperienced team. 2-2 or 3-1 is possible for the non-conference portion of the schedule if they can pull off a win versus Army. The in-conference schedule includes trips to Fresno, Nevada, Boise and Wyoming with home games versus Hawaii, Colorado State, UNLV and Wyoming. An 8-5 record would be great for the Aztecs although 7-5 with a bowl berth is much more likely for the Aztecs in 2012.
