Fall Preview: FIU

Fall Preview for the Florida International Golden Panthers:

QB
#12   Medlock, Jake QB 6-3 220 R-So. Jacksonville, Fla. (Fletcher H.S.)--5 games played, 2 starts. 19 carries for 87 yards and 2 TD. 37-56 passing for 376 yards and 1 TD.
#16   Porter, Fred QB 6-2 185 So. Ruskin, Fla. (Lennard HS)--No stats in 2011.
#11   Dan-Fodio, Akil QB 6-4 210 R-Fr. Stone Mountain, Ga. (Redan HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#08   Hammonds, Loranzo QB 6-1 188 R-Fr. North Augusta, S.C. (North Augusta HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??   E.J. Hilliard QB Miami, FL Northwestern 6'3" 175--Incoming freshman.

Playing mostly as a backup to Wesley Carroll in 2011, sophomore Jake Medlock made 2 starts and passed for nearly 400 yards and ran for nearly 100 yards. Medlock looks to be part of a more spread out offense than the more straightforward passing game with Carroll. Porter, Dan-Fodio, and Hammonds all look to battle for the backup job and the backup battle could last all summer.

RB
#09   Rhodes, Kedrick RB 5-11 190 Jr. Ocala, Fla. (Trinity Catholic)--13 games played, 13 starts. 234 carries for 1149 yards and 8 TD. 27 catches for 252 yards.
#06   Harden, Jeremiah RB 5-9 202 R-Sr. Ft. Lauderdale, FL (Syracuse) (St. Thomas Aquinas High School)--6 games played. 21 carries for 90 yards and 1 TD.
#26   Mallary, Darian RB 5-8 180 Sr. Miami , Fla. (Gulliver Prep)--6 games played. 7 carries for 11 yards. 1 catch for 2 yards. 1 kickoff return for 20 yards.
#36   Bennett, Brandon RB 5-9 208 R-So. Miramar, Fla. (Pembroke Pines Charter HS)--9 games played. 3 tackles.
#31   Boswell, Robert RB 5-8 180 R-So. Green Cove Springs, Fla. (Fleming Island HS)--8 games played. 2 tackles.
#20   Coleman, Shane RB 5-8 192 R-Fr. Green Cove Springs, Fla. (Clay HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??   Lamarq Caldwell RB Tampa, FL Tampa Bay Tech 6'0" 210--Incoming freshman.

Junior Kedrick Rhodes set himself from the rest of the pack in 2011 with 1149 yards rushing and 27 catches last season. Rhodes should get the majority of the carries and could move himself into the 1300+ yard range of rushing yards with a strong junior season. Senior Jeremiah Harden added 21 carries for FIU and should be a more than capable backup along with senior Darian Mallary who should get a few carries as well. Sophomores Bennett and Boswell made somewhat of an impact on special teams in 2011 and look to expand their roles for the Golden Panthers in 2012.

TE
#82   Rhymes, Dominique WR 6-3 205 So. Miami, Fla. (Miami Northwestern HS)--10 games played, 4 starts. 9 catches for 112 yards.
#86   Harris, Joey TE 6-3 255 R-Sr. Chiefland, Fla. (Chiefland High School)--4 games played. 1 catch for 6 yards.
#49   Delpe, Junior TE 6-4 237 R-Jr. North Miami, Fla. (North Miami Beach High School)--No stats in 2011.
#33   Schaubhut, Zach TE 6-3 232 Jr. Chipley, Fla. (Air Force)--No stats in 2011.
#80   Griner, Ya'Keem TE 6-4 221 R-Fr. Starke, Fla. (Bradford HS)--Redshirted in 2011.

With a combined 5 catches among the returning tight ends on the roster, there is not alot of experience at the tight end position for FIU in 2012. Sophomore Dominique Rhymes started 4 games in 2011 and had a solid 9 catches for 112 yards leading the way. Senior Joey Harris was the only other tight end with playing time making 1 catch in 4 games played. Juniors Delpe and Schaubhut as well as redshirt freshman Griner all look to push Rhymes and Harris for some playing time although special teams may be a better option.

WR
#05   Times, Wayne WR 5-11 188 Sr. Miami, Fla. (Northwestern High School)--13 games played, 9 starts. 1 carry for 4 yards. 54 catches for 540 yards and 2 TD. 3 punt returns for 7.3 yard average. 11 kickoff returns for 23.6 yard average. 1 tackle.
#88   Younger, Jacob WR 6-2 190 R-Sr. Titusville, Fla. (Astronaut High School)--12 games played, 8 starts. 1-1 passing for 44 yards. 21 catches for 286 yards and 1 TD.
#10   Coleman, Glenn WR 6-2 205 Jr. New Orleans, La. (West Jefferson HS)--11 games played, 8 started. 1 carry for -6 yards. 14 catches for 128 yards and 1 TD.
#01   Wright, Willis WR 6-1 196 Jr. Miami, Fla. (Miami Springs)--11 games played, 1 start. 10 catches for 133 yards and 1 TD.

#84   Curry, Michael WR 6-0 190 R-So. Bradenton, Fla. (Bradenton Prep)--2 games played. No stats in 2011.
#89   Vann, Rockey WR 6-0 170 Sr. Ocoee, Fla. (Ocoee High School)--1 game played. No stats in 2011.
#23   Burrows, Richard WR 6-4 185 R-Fr. Palm Bay, Fla. (Bayside HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#17   Lowder, T.J. WR 5-11 173 R-Fr. Panama City, Fla. (Bay HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#31   Taylor, Clinton WR 5-9 161 R-Fr. Miami, Fla. (Miami Northwestern HS)--Redshirted in 2011.
#??   Nick England WR Suwanee, GA Collins Hill 6'0" 170--Incoming freshman.

#??   Adrian Jenkins WR Tampa, FL Jefferson 6'3" 195--Incoming freshman.
#??   Jeremy Smith WR Pembroke Pines, FL Flanagan 5'9" 162--Incoming freshman.

Seniors Wayne Times and Jacob Younger are the receivers in charge of making FIU fans forget about TY Hilton who was the most decorated wide receiver in FIU history. Times had a solid season with over 50 catches but only 3 touchdowns on the season. Younger added 21 catches and another touchdown. Juniors Coleman and Wright added 24 catches as the only other receivers with 10+ catches in 2011. Wozniak, Jean-Louis, Williams, Curry and the group of 7 redshirt or true freshmen will all battle to be in the rotation at wide receiver in the fall.

OL

#??   Delmar Taylor OL Corsicana, TX Navarro J.C. 6'4" 285--Incoming freshman.

The Golden Panther offensive line is one of the most experienced in the nation with all 5 starters having 10+ starts in 2011 on the line. Seniors Hauptmann, Revilla, and Bryan all started every game in 2011 and look to be the anchors of the line. Seniors, Smith and Bryant both added 11 starts for the Golden Panther offense last fall. It is very rare for a team to start 5 seniors on the offensive line and it is put up or shut up for this group of seniors.

The FIU defensive line is returning almost completely intact from 2011 with 3 of the 4 projected starters having 10+ starts in 2011. Williams, Pound and Faciane combined for 33 starts in 2011 and will all be part of the first rotation that well be tough for anyone to move the ball on. Junior Paul Crawford is the wild card among the starters after making 2 starts and making 19 tackles in 2011. He must step up and be a full time starter in 2012 for the Golden Panther defense to be impressive this fall. Others that will find their way on the field in 2012 are Lee, Forney, Perine Fitch, Smith, Francois, and Mattox with 3 redshirt freshmen and 7 true freshmen ready to push those players for a chance to get on the field in the fall. The backup positional battles should be fun to watch during the summer and early fall for the Golden Panthers defensive line.

LB
#34   Fraser, Winston LB 6-2 226 R-Sr. Miami, Fla. (Booker T. Washington H.S.)--13 games played, 13 starts. 108 tackles, 7.5 for loss. 4 sacks, 1 interception, 2 pbu, 3 pd, 1 forced fumble.

#??   Jamie Willis LB Fort Meade, FL Fort Meade 6'2" 180--Incoming freshman.

Yet another experience laden area of the team for FIU is the linebacker corps who return 2 players that made all the starts in 2011 and one that made 9 of 13 starts in 2011. Seniors Winston Fraser, Jordan Hunt, and Kenneth Dillard combined for 224 tackles and 8 sacks on the season and will improve on that total easily eclipsing 250 and maybe even 275 combined tackles in 2012. Backup Gregory Hickman added 34 tackles but was a big play linebacker for the Golden Panthers with 5 sacks, an interception, and 1 forced fumble in limited action. Markeith Russell, Luis Rosado Caleb Vincent all have experience but will be pushed by Maynor and Maxey for backup playing time on the defense in 2012.

DB
#27   Cheeseborough, Jose CB 5-9 176 R-Jr. Jacksonville, Fla. (Robert E. Lee HS)--13 games played, 13 starts. 59 tackles, 3 for loss. 2 sacks, 3 pbu, 3 pd.

As with the rest of the defense, the secondary is very experienced at the top for the Golden Panthers with 4 members of the defensive backfield making 9+ starts in 2011. Cornerbacks Cheeseborough and Miller combined for 122 tackles and 2 interceptions from the edge last season and look to be just as solid although their interception totals need to improve. Cyprien and Taylor are the safeties and added 121 tackles and 2 interceptions playing very solid pass defense but willing to step up and stop the running game. Sophomore nickelback Richard Leonard had a very impressive freshman season adding 47 tackles and leading the team with 3 interceptions in 2011. He could easily move into one of the starting cornerback spots and move one of the starters to the nickel spot. Halley, Mertile, Blanchard, Souarin, and Jones all played some in 2011 and will be part of the defensive rotation in 2012 with some making bigger impacts on special teams this fall.

K
#38   Griffin, Jack K 6-1 203 Sr. Naples, FL (St. John Neumann High School)--13 games played. 7 tackles. 22-26 field goals, 16-18 from inside the 40, 6-8 from 40+, long of 46 yards. 36-36 extra points. 4 punts for 34.8 yard average. 68 kickoffs, 5 touchbacks.
#??   Chris Ayers K Hollywood, FL South Broward 6'0" 160--Incoming freshman.

Senior Jack Griffin had another extraordinary season in 2011 making 22-26 field goals and all 36 extra point attempts on the season. Griffin made 16-18 from inside the 40 and an impressive 6-8 from 40+ yards. While Griffin only had 5 touchbacks on 68 kickoffs in 2011, that number should improve in 2012 and be closer to 15 or 20 this fall.

P
#40   Brisk, Josh P 5-10 191 R-Sr. Plantation, Fla. (Duquesne ) (American Heritage HS)--12 games played. 61 punts for 42.3 yard average, 16 inside the 20 yard line, 12 over 50 yards, 1 blocked. 3 tackles.
#49   Lynch, Dylan P/K 6-3 220 Jr. Jacksonville Beach, Fla. (Fletcher)--2 games played. 5 kickoffs, 0 touchbacks.

Senior Josh Brisk had a solid season for the Golden Panthers in 2011 with a 42.3 yard punt average including 16 that landed inside the 20 yard line and 12 that went over 50 yards. If Brisk can slightly improve on those numbers, he could be in the running for All-Sun Belt honors this fall.

LS
#65   MacClugage, Mitch LS 5-8 195 Sr. Naples, Fla. (Barron Collier H.S.)--9 games played. 2 tackles.
#44   Taylor, Brandon LS 6-0 225 So. Slidell, La. (Northshore HS)--5 games played. No stats in 2011.

In senior Mitch MacClugage and sophomore Brandon Taylor, the Golden Panthers have 2 solid long snappers that can help out the FIU special teams significantly in 2012. Both will get playing time and look to be very solid players in 2012 for FIU.

ATH
#?? Johnnie Durante ATH Miami, FL Dr. Krop 6'0" 180--Incoming freshman.
#?? Raymond Jackson ATH New Orleans, LAO. Perry Walker 6'2" 215--Incoming freshman.
#?? Favian Upshaw ATH Titusville, FL Astronaut 6'2" 175--Incoming freshman.

2011 was another solid season for the Golden Panthers but not quite what they were hoping for after sharing a conference title in 2010. FIU looks to improve on the 8-5 record from 2011 and go back to winning the conference in their last year as a member of the Sun Belt. FIU starts the season with 4 straight non-conference games and look to be 2-2 after games versus Duke, Akron, UCF, and Louisville. The Golden Panthers do get WKU and Arkansas State at home but have to go to ULL and the always tough at home Troy Trojans. 8-4 with a bowl berth looks to be the best case scenario for the Golden Panthers although with the large number of senior starters, this is the chance for FIU to make an impact nationally in preparation for the move to Conference USA in 2013.
