Fall Preview for the University of Central Florida Knights:

QB
#05 Blake Bortles Quarterback 6-4 221 RS SO Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo--10 games played. 21 carries for 47 yards and 1 TD. 75-110 passing for 958 yards and 6 TD.
#10 Nicolas Ranieri Quarterback 6-2 206 RS JR Orlando, Fla./Colorado State--No stats in 2011.

#?? Troy Green QB 6-1 200 Fr. Skaneateles, NY Skaneateles Senior--Incoming freshman.

Sophomore Blake Bortles leads a group of Central Florida quarterbacks that are very thin in experience. Bortles had 41 yards rushing and 958 yards passing in somewhat limited action last fall but looks to be the man during his sophomore year. juniors Nocilas Ranieri and Rafael Echemendia as well as redshirt freshman Michell Bourne will battle for the backup spot with none of the three having any game experience.

FB/H-Back
#13 Dontravius Floyd H-Back 6-2 237 SR Homestead, Fla./South Dade--7 games played, 5 starts. 11 catches for 92 yards. 1 tackle.
#32 Billy Giovanetti Fullback 5-11 230 RS SR Winter Park, Fla./Bishop Moore--10 games played, 5 starts. 7 catches for 49 yards. 3 tackles.
#40 Brendan Kelly H-Back 6-3 235 RS SR Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River--12 games played. 3 catches for 22 yards. 3 tackles.
#42 Brandon MacMeekin H-Back 6-3 235 RS SO Jacksonville, Fla./Providence School--No stats in 2011.

The Knights use a fullback/h-back hybrid type of player instead of having a true fullback in their offense. Seniors Dontravius Floyd and Billy Giovanetti and Brendan Kelly are all part of the rotation and can play on the line or in the backfield with success. The trio of h-backs combined for 21 catches for 163 yards but no touchdowns. Sophomore Brandon MacMeekin did not see any action as a redshirt freshman in 2011 but should work into the plans this fall on special teams.

RB
#28 Latavius Murray Running Back 6-3 222 RS SR Nedrow, N.Y./Onondaga Central--12 games played, 2 starts. 98 carries for 549 yards and 8 TD. 17 catches for 242 yards and 1 TD. 1 kickoff return for 69 yards and 1 TD. 4 tackles.
#34 Brynn Harvey Running Back 6-1 209 RS SR Largo, Fla./Largo--11 games played, 5 starts. 126 carries for 574 yards and 3 TD. 13 catches for 103 yards.

#44 Joseph Puopolo Running Back 5-10 236 RS FR Naples, Fla./Barron Collier--Redshirted in 2011.

Central Florida has a pair of senior running backs in Latavius Murray and Brynn Harvey who combined for just over 1100 yards and 11 touchdowns. The pair also added 30 catches for nearly 350 yards and a touchdown as well for the UCF offense. Backing them up are a pair of sophomores and redshirt freshmen who have no in-game experience at least one or two must step up and make some plays on offense and special teams for the Knights in 2012.

TE
#84 Justin Tukes Tight End 6-5 246 SO Sylvester, Ga./Worth County--5 games played, 1 start. 2 catches for 18 yards.
#39 Kevin Garvy Tight End 6-3 224 RS SR Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman--6 games played.

#85 Kevin Miller Tight End 6-4 251 RS FR Delran, N.J./Holy Cross High--Redshirted in 2011.

#?? Cal Bloom TE 6-5 235 Fr. Osseo, MN Osseo--Incoming freshman.
#?? Blake Davis TE 6-5 225 Fr. Delray Beach, FL American Heritage School--Incoming freshman.

In comparison to the h-back spot in the UCF offense, the tight end is a spot that saw very limited action in 2011. Returning for 2012 is sophomore leading tight end receiver Justin Tukes who made 2 catches for 18 yards and was the only tight end with any catches last fall. Senior Kevin Garvy and junior DJ Brown played in limited action last fall and look to be the top two backups for Tukes and should make a bigger impact in 2012. With three new freshmen on the roster as well as redshirt freshman Kevin Miller, the tight end may become a more important part of the Knights offense in the future.

WR
#09 J.J. Worton Wide Receiver 6-2 201 RS SO Homestead, Fla./South Dade--12 games played, 1 start. 1 carry for 0 yards. 41 catches for 531 yards and 4 TD. 17 punt returns for 8.8 yard average. 1 tackle.

#?? Taylor Oldham WR 6-1 195 Fr. Daytona Beach, FL Warner Christian Academy--Incoming freshman.
#?? Dareen Owi WR 6-3 200 Fr. Miami, FL Miami Norland--Incoming freshman.

The Knights have a trio of wide receivers that are very experienced led by senior Quincy McDuffie. McDuffie had 43 catches for 482 yards and a touchdown in addition to 132 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown. Flanking McDuffie are sophomores JJ Worton (41 catches, 4 TD) and Josh Reese (30 catches, 2 TD) who both give the offense a chance to carry Bortles as he gets his feet wet as a full time starter in 2012. The only other receiver with experience is sophomore Rannell hall who made 4 catches in his freshman year. Among a group including Greenaway, Nahat, White, Calabrese, Bundy, Maceroy and the incoming freshmen, at least 2 players need to step up to be able to give the current starters some rest. Similar to 2011, Some of the freshmen may just the middle group and move right into the wide receiver rotation this fall.

With big expectations following an 11-3 season in 2010 that saw the Knights beat SEC foe Georgia in the Liberty Bowl, things did not go as planned in 2011. The Knights lost 2 of their first 4 games with 7 point losses to both FIU and BYU in non-conference play. After a win over Marshall, the Knights lost to SMU followed by an embarrassing loss to UAB. The season ended with UCF losing 3 of 4 and ending the season with a 5-7 record and one of the most underperforming teams of 2012. The Knights wipe the slate clean in 2012 with a challenging non-conference slate that includes Akron, Ohio State, FIU and Missouri. Going 2-2 will be difficult but not impossible and will be a true indication of how good or bad the Knights will be in 2012. The conference schedule is highlighted by a trips to Tulsa and Marshall with home games versus ECU, Southern Miss and SMU. Another 5-7 record would be an embarrassment to the Knights and should not happen this fall. 8-4 is likely or 7-5 if the Knights cannot go 2-2 out of conference.
