WAC News and Notes: 8/28/12

With it being game week this week, will the UTSA-South Alabama still happen on Thursday and what kind of fallout comes from calling your team the red-headed step child? New Mexico State is desperate for increased season tickets partnering with Grabitsite.com for promotions:

Idaho:
Idaho Vandals football is going through some tough times. The program is nowhere near the level of in-state rival Boise State and now it is heading to independent status starting in 2013 since the Western Athletic Conference is abandoning football for the time being. No conference wants the team.

Louisiana Tech:
RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes and select student-athletes met with the media today previewing Louisiana Tech’s Aug. 30 game against Texas A&M at Independence Stadium in Shreveport.
Head Coach Sonny Dykes Opening Comments:
“It is good to see everybody back. It is kind of an exciting time of the year. We are getting back into game week. It is a little unusual today being a Friday when we are doing this, but playing a Thursday night game is a little unusual just because of all the changes you have to make with your routine.”
“College football coaches, just like college football players, love their routine. It is a little bit of a change, but it is a change we are excited about.”
“We are looking forward to getting out there a week from yesterday and teaming up against a good Texas A&M team. We will know more about where we are as a team and where we are as a program then.”

New Mexico State:
NM State athletics has announced another partnership aimed at increasing attendance at home games.  Grabitsite.com has a new deal for NM State football season tickets.
Anyone that buys an NM State football season ticket through the grabitsite.com website will receive a season ticket, plus an additional $117 of local gift cards.  This deal includes the following: (YOU MUST BUY YOUR SEASON PASSES ON GRABIT TO RECEIVE THIS OFFER)

San Jose State:
SAN JOSE -- There will be a short learning curve for quarterback David Fales when San Jose State opens its season Friday at 7 p.m. at No. 21 Stanford.
"I don't think there's any way to ease him into the 21st team in the country. You just go play," Spartans coach Mike MacIntyre said. "He'll have his good moments and he'll have some bad moments. It's just how he bounces back after the bad moments that will be the telltale sign."
Fales, who will make his major college debut after starting for two seasons at Monterey Peninsula College, isn't focusing on the opponent, a team that's played in BCS bowl games the past two years.

Texas State:
San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State Athletics Department will host a preseason football pep rally  for students during the final minutes of Texas State's final preseason workout before the Bobcats begin their normal game week preparations before their season-opening game at Houston on Sept. 1.
Texas State will practice in full pads beginning at 5:15 p.m. and the pep rally starts at 7:00 p.m. at the newly constructed North Side Complex with head coach Dennis Franchione slated to address those students attending.  Students are asked to park in the east parking lot and enter through Gate 5.
The Bobcats are playing their first season in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and will play in the Western Athletic Conference in 2012 before joining the Sunbelt Conference in 2013.

Utah State:
Utah State football head coach Gary Andersen, along with junior center Tyler Larsen and senior safety McKade Brady, held a news conference Monday to open the 2012 season. A complete transcript of Andersen, Larsen and Brady's remarks can be found below.

Thoughts on camp:
"Overall I thought that the kids did a nice job of coming back in shape. Obviously, (strength coach) Evan Simon and his crew and the kids did a very nice job. So that is always a huge positive when you can start fast in camp. It was a long camp, three weeks, and we are just starting school today, so it was a little bit different as far as that goes. Overall, it was a very positive camp. We stayed healthy for the most part, which is a good thing for us. Some young kids stepped up and did some nice things, we had a lot of position battles. Our identity and our belief when we bring a junior college kid in is to give him a chance to be able to play early and to complete and that took place. Some junior college kids had the opportunity to make the travel squad and some of the other kids didn't because the kids already in the program held them off. It was a good, competitive camp for all, and we felt like it was positive. We moved into game week, really a week ago even though it was still camp. I have spent a lot of time getting ready for Southern Utah and basically had four bonus days to get ready for them. Camp has been positive overall. It was hot! I can tell you that much! You guys who were out there know it was hot."

UTSA:
The UTSA football team has waited for more than 10 months to get another shot at South Alabama, which handed the Roadrunners one of the toughest losses of their inaugural season last year.
With Tropical Storm Isaac barreling toward the Gulf Coast, UTSA may have to wait a little longer for the rematch.
