Independent Weekend Results

Northern Illinois 41 Army 40--In a wild game that saw 80 overall points scored, the Northern Illinois Huskies pulled out a 41-40 win over the Army Black Knights Saturday in West Point, New York. The Huskies relied on do-it-all quarterback Jordan Lynch who threw for 342 yards and added another 125 yards on the ground and 5 total touchdowns (4 passing, 1 rushing) in the win. Army ran for 486 yards with Steelman, Maples, and Dixon all running for over 100 yards in the game. The Huskies turned the ball over 3 times in the game while Army did not turn it over. Northern Illinois takes their 2-1 record back home to face Big 12 foe Kansas while Army tries to get in the win column with a trip to reeling Wake Forest of the ACC.

Penn State 34 Navy 7--After getting trounced on national television by Notre Dame in the season opener, the Naval Academy struggled yet again falling 34-7 to an 0-2 Penn State squad. The Midshipmen were held to 255 yards on the ground and turned the ball over 4 different times in the defeat, the last of which was a fumble that was returned 74-yards for a Penn State touchdown. While many thought the play in 2011 was an aberration, 2012 has started the same way most of last season went. Navy brings their 0-2 record back home to play the Virginia Military Institute in a game that should give the Midshipmen confidence with a trip to Air Force only two weeks away.

Utah 24 BYU 21--In the last "Holy War" being played for the time being, the Utah Utes came up with the win 24-21 over BYU Saturday night in Salt Lake City. The Cougars dominated the offensive categories and held Utah to only 245 total yards but two huge turnovers, including one returned for a touchdown, did them in. The ending was one of the wildest in recent memory with Utah fans storming the field after a blocked kick but not waiting till the clock hit 0:00 resulting in a 15-yard penalty and re-kick. The following kick from 36-yards out hit the upright giving the win to the Pac 12's Utah. BYU tries to get back to winning with a tough trip to Boise to play #24 Boise State Thursday night.
