Minnesota 28 WMU 23--In an evenly matched game that saw the
total offense separated by only 23 yards, the Minnesota Golden Gophers won
28-23 over the Western Michigan Broncos Saturday in Minneapolis, Minnesota. WMU
quarterback Alex Carder was 24-44 for 209 yards and 1 touchdown on the day
while running back Dareyon Chance had an excellent day with 144 yards on 29
carries and 1 touchdown. The Broncos try to rebound from this loss with a trip
to Connecticut in a very winnable game versus the Big East opponent.
Purdue 54 EMU 16--A week after losing by double digits to an
FCS school in Illinois State, the Eastern Michigan Eagles were destroyed by Big
Ten foe Purdue 54-16 in West Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday. The Eagles only
totaled 313 yards of offense with 3 turnovers and a paltry 2-14 converting
third downs. Purdue racked up 576 yards and nearly 400 on the ground in the easy
win. At 0-3 with a trip to Michigan State coming up, the Eagles will need to
play spectacularly during the rest of conference play to keep coach Ron English
off the hot seat.
Michigan 63 Massachusetts 13--After failing to slow down
offenses from UConn and Indiana to start their inaugural FBS season, the UMass
Minutemen were no match for Dernard Robinson and the #17 Michigan Wolverines
Saturday in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines racked up 291 yards in the air and 294
yards on the ground in route to 585 yards of total offense in the win. One
bright spot for the Minutemen was the play of senior running back Michael Cox
who ran for 76 yards on 18 carries after only 32 total rushing yards on 20
carries in the opening two games. The Minutemen begin conference play Saturday
with a trip to Miami OH.
Akron 66 Morgan State 6--After two rough losses including an
overtime thriller versus FIU, the Akron Zips were finally able to earn the
first win at Akron for coach Terry Bowden by the score of 66-6 over FCS foe
Morgan State. The Zips totaled 753 yards of offense with 565 coming in the air.
Senior quarterback Dalton Williams ended his night with 446 yards passing and 3
touchdowns to give him a total of 1004 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season.
The Zips take their 1-2 record to SEC opponent Tennessee in an attempt to pull
a huge upset win for the Zips.
Boise State 39 Miami OH 12--Riding the coattails of running
back DJ Harper's career-high 162 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns, the Boise
State Broncos cruised to a 39-12 victory over the Miami OH RedHawks in Boise,
Idaho on Saturday. The Boise State defense held Miami OH to only 9 first downs
and 227 yards of total offense during the game. Boise State ended the night
with 599 yards of total offense with quarterback Joe Southwick throwing for 304
yards. Boise State takes their 1-1 record and #24 ranking up against BYU
Thursday night while Miami OH gets a bit of a breather in FBS newbie UMass.
Toledo 27 Bowling Green 15--Behind another 300 yard passing
game from quarterback Terrance Owens, the Toledo Rockets held on for a 27-15
conference victory over the Bowling Green Falcons. Toledo ended the night with
452 yards of total offense and went 7-14 on third downs conversions and over 31
minutes of possession in the win. The Falcons only went 4-13 on third downs
while going 1-3 on 4th down conversions. With a 1-2 record, Bowling Green heads
to Virginia Tech Saturday looking to pull the upset while Toledo stays at home
for a matchup versus FCS opponent Coastal Carolina in the Glass Bowl.
Ball State 41 Indiana 39--For the second consecutive year,
the Ball State Cardinals pulled out a win voer Big Ten foe Indiana, this time
by the score of 41-39. This was a wild game that saw the teams come two yards
shy of totaling 1000 yards and 60 first downs, the end came down to a simple
field goal. Ball State kicker Steven Schott drilled a 42-yard field goal, his
second of the game, with no time on the clock for the victory. Ball State
quarterback Keith Wenning threw for three touchdowns on the day with no
interceptions. Ball State takes their 2-1 record for a home matchup versus Big
East opponent South Florida Saturday afternoon.
Ohio 27 Marshall 24--With thoughts of a perfect season on
the minds of Ohio Bobcats fans entering the game, the Bobcats came out tight
losing 14-0 in the first quarter before storming back to a 27-24 win over the
Marshall Thundering Herd Saturday. Ohio was outgained 491-399 but benefitted
from 3 Marshall turnovers. Kicker Matt Weller went 2-2 on field goal attempts
including a 38-yard attempt to win the game for the Bobcats. Ohio gets a break
next week with a home game versus the FCS' Norfolk State and a chance to go 4-0
while Marshall looks to get back to .500 with a conference tilt at the Rice
Owls Saturday night.
