Welcome to the big time Memphis and San Diego State. The highly respected G5 programs hosted top 25 P5 programs and pulled out season-changing wins. Anthony Miller and Rashaad Penny made their names known to the nation in two of the most impressive individual performances of the young season.
Otherwise, we found out that WKU may not be that good, Appalachian State has some work to do, and East Carolina can turn a 17-7 lead into a 57-0 run by the other team.
Three best performances of week three:
- Memphis: The Tigers stood toe to toe with UCLA and beat the Bruins in a shootout. Memphis fought through adversity (some made on their own) and just kept demolishing the Pac-12 defense. Hopefully, everyone knows Anthony Miller’s name now.
- South Florida: Now this is the Bulls squad that we were expecting this season. They absolutely crushed an Illinois squad that held WKU to 7 points last week. Flowers threw for 280 and rushed for 106 in route to leading an offense that put up 680 yards and 38 first downs.
- San Diego State: We can finally give the top spot in the MWC back to the Aztecs. Riding a dominant performance by Penny in the backfield, they pulled a second straight Pac-12 win in beating Stanford. Statistically, they dominated the Cardinal with a 99 yard lead in total offense, +3 in turnovers, 13 more first downs, and a 41:14 to 18:46 win in time of possession.
MACTION game of the week:
- Toledo 54, Tulsa 51: Of course the Golden Hurricane makes an appearance once again. This game featured 105 points, 58 first downs, 1,227 yards of offense, 24 penalties, a defensive PAT score, and Toledo coming back from a 28-7 deficit. Oh yeah, Logan Woodside passed for 458 and 6 TD with 9 catches, 178 yards, and 3 TD coming from Cody Thompson.
Three biggest disappointment of week three:
- Charlotte: It wasn’t as much the fact that they lost to an FCS program as much as being dominated for virtually the entire game. It was an embarrassing performance for a team that I thought could turn the corner a bit this season. Now, it’s about wondering when they will get their first win of the season.
- Nevada: When you lose to an FCS team, you make the list. The Wolfpack looked terrible and were beaten by an Idaho State team that lost to Utah State by 38 last week. Nevada is officially the worst team in the MWC by a long shot.
- Western Kentucky: The Hilltoppers faithful had to think that things would fall into place versus a below average Louisiana Tech defense. Instead, they struggled to score the 22 points they put up and couldn’t get a first down to ice the game. That missed first down opportunity resulted in a game-winning drive by the Bulldogs and a possible shift of power in Conference USA.

- Marshall 21, Kent State 0 (much closer than final score)
- Ball State 28, Tennessee Tech 13
- Southern Miss 28, ULM 17
