Sun Belt Weekend Results


Central Florida 33 Florida International 20--The Central Florida Knights built a 25-0 lead over the Florida International at the half before holding off a second half rally winning 33-20 in Orlando, Florida Saturday. The Knights rolled up 431 yards of total offense and an 11-minute edge in time of possession. Central Florida never trailed in the game and took a double digit lead from halfway through the second quarter to the end of the game. Central Florida looks for their 3rd win of the season next week on the road versus SEC opponent Missouri while Florida International hosts #20 Louisville in a non-conference matchup.

MTSU 48 Memphis 30--Capitalizing on 4 Memphis turnovers, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders cruised to a 48-30 win in Memphis, Tennessee Saturday night. Yards were nearly the same with MTSU winning the total offense war 439-399 and the field possession war by nearly 7 minutes. After Memphis took a 10-7 lead :08 into the second quarter, the Blue Raiders of MTSU put up 34 of the next 41 points in pulling away easily in the second half. MTSU looks to exceed their win total of 2011 with a road trip to Georgia Tech before returning to conference play. Memphis tries to get in the win column with a Saturday night matchup with the Duke Blue Devils.

Nebraska 42 Arkansas State 13--Giving up 14-points per quarter in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th quarters, the Arkansas State Red Wolves fell to 1-2 with a 42-13 beatdown from Nebraska in Lincolnm Nebraska Saturday afternoon. Arkansas State were held under 300 yards of total offense and went 6-19 on third down conversions and only 130 yards in the air from preseason Sun Belt player of the year, Ryan Aplin. The Cornhuskers totaled 527 yards of offense but allowed the Red Wolves to stay in the game with 4 costly turnovers, two of which resulted in 13 Arkansas State points. The Red Wolves get an easy matchup with Alcorn State before starting conference play at home versus Western Kentucky.

Oklahoma State 65 Louisiana 24--Taking haymaker after haymaker from the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns fell behind 44-0 at the half in a 65-24 loss Saturday in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Ragin' Cajuns gave up 742 total yards with 412 coming in the air and another 330 on the ground. The Cowboys extended the lead to 58-10 as the third quarter finished. Louisiana lost the time of possession battle by just over 9 minutes. Louisiana must put this loss past them starting conference play versus Florida International after a bye week this week.

North Carolina 31 South Alabama 7--Giving up 28 first half points including three touchdown passes from quarterback Mike Glennon, the South Alabama Jaguars lost 31-7 in Raleigh, North Carolina Saturday night. The Jaguars committed three turnovers taking away any hope for an upset. South Alabama finished the day with 314 yards of total offense but went 0-11 on third down conversions for the day. The South Alabama Jaguars go on the road to play SEC power Mississippi State before starting conference play on September 29th versus the Troy Trojans.

Western Kentucky 32 Kentucky 31 OT--Taking a 17-0 first half lead, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers allowed the Kentucky Wildcats to come back before winning in dramatic fashion on a two-point conversion to win the game in overtime. The Hilltoppers ended the day with 323 yards of total offense and forced 4 Wildcat interceptions, including 3 alone from safety Jonathan Dowling. The Hilltoppers won for the first time ever versus an SEC squad and beat Kentucky for the first time in school history. WKU running back Antonio Andrews ran for 125 yards on 34 carries and added 3 catches for 36 yards and 3 total touchdowns. The Hilltoppers look to continue their winning ways with a home matchup Saturday night versus Conference USA foe Southern Miss. 

Kansas State 35 North Texas 21--Despite cutting the Kansas State lead to 14-13 in the third quarter, the North Texas Mean Green were outscored 21-7 in the final 22 minutes in losing 35-21 to the #15 Kansas State Wildcats Saturday night. Both teams played nearly perfectly even on offense with K-State outgaining North Texas by 20 yards and tying with 21 first downs per team. The Mean Green struggled on 3rd downs only going 7-15 while the Wildcats went 5-7 during the game. Kansas State quarterback Colin Klein was the difference with 208 yards passing and 85 yards rushing on the night. North Texas starts conference play Saturday night with a home game versus the Troy Trojans and a chance to get back to .500.

Georgia 56 Florida Atlantic 20--With 12:19 left in the second quarter, the Florida Atlantic Owls were outscored 44-6 in the final 42:19 in losing 56-20 to #7 Georgia Saturday night. The Owls had a surprising 318 yards of total offense and forced 4 Georgia turnovers in the loss. Running back Damian Fortner had 81 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown during the game. Adarius Glanton intercepted a Georgia pass taking it 42 yards for a touchdown to end the scoring at 56-20. The Florida Atlantic Owls go on the road to #1 Alabama and are 50+ point underdogs Saturday.

Mississippi State 30 Troy 24--Putting up 572 yards of total offense including 343 yards passing from quarterback Corey Robinson, the Troy Trojans came up just short in their upset bid versus Mississippi State losing 30-24 in Troy, Alabama. Running back Shawn Southward added 137 yards on the ground for the Trojans but the Trojans turned the ball over 4 times to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were 4-14 on third downs and lost the time of possession war by just over 2 minutes. The Troy Trojans must move past this almost upset and get ready for conference play versus North Texas Saturday night on the road.

Auburn 31 ULM 28--A week after shocking the college football world with an overtime win over Arkansas, the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks came up just short versus the Auburn Tigers losing 31-28 in overtime. Both teams ended the day with over 410 yards of offense and a combined 46 first downs. Auburn was in control early in the second half before committing two turnovers and letting ULM back into the game. ULM quarterback Kolton Browning went 28-46 passing for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns to go with 58 yards on the ground and another touchdown in the loss. The Warhawks must turn around and forget this loss with a home game Friday night versus Big 12 stalwart Baylor that will be nationally televised on ESPN.
