Mountain West Weekend Results

Boise State 39 Miami OH 12--Riding the coattails of running back DJ Harper's career-high 162 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns, the Boise State Broncos cruised to a 39-12 victory over the Miami OH RedHawks in Boise, Idaho on Saturday. The Boise State defense held Miami OH to only 9 first downs and 227 yards of total offense during the game. Boise State ended the night with 599 yards of total offense with quarterback Joe Southwick throwing for 304 yards. Boise State takes their 1-1 record and #24 ranking up against BYU Thursday night while Miami OH gets a bit of a breather in FBS newbie UMass.

Washington State 35 UNLV 27--In a game that saw UNLV in many ways outplay Washington State, the Cougars came out on top 35-27 in Las Vegas Friday night. The Rebels had 26 first downs, 460 total yards, and went 9-17 on third down conversions during the game. The Rebels had the ball for 11 more minutes than the Cougars but just could not make that final play to put points on the board several times. The Rebels struggled versus the Cougar pass attack with Washington State passing for 378 and 4 touchdowns on the night. UNLV is 0-3 losing by a combined 14-points in those losses. The Rebels have a tough stretch coming up with games versus Air Force, Utah State, Louisiana Tech, Nevada and Boise State all in a row. 0-8 is entirely possible after leaving three possible wins on the table in the first three weeks.

Cal Poly 24 Wyoming 22--In a huge MWC surprise, the Wyoming Cowboys laid an egg versus FCS opponent Cal Poly Saturday in Laramie, Wyoming. The Cowboys were without injured quarterback Brett Smith and struggled to get things going offensively with only 260 yards and 14 first downs as well as a 2-12 conversion rate on third down. The Cowboys were outgained by 99 yards and lost the time of possession battle by over 11 minutes. Wyoming is now 0-3 with a road trip to WAC foe Idaho in a must win game before entering MWC play.

Nevada 45 Northwestern State 34--Expecting a very easy game after a tough schedule to start the season, the Nevada Wolfpack found themselves in a dogfight versus FCS foe Northwestern State before pulling away in the end for a 45-34 win. The Wolfpack ended the night with 655 yards of total offense including 418 yards rushing with running back Stefphon Jefferson running for 247 and 2 touchdowns. Nevada gave up 585 yards to Northwestern State and 12-19 third down conversions in the game. Jefferson leaves the game 2nd in the nation in rushing with 529 yards on the season. Nevada looks to keep in the win column with a Saturday trip to new conference foe Hawaii.

Texas Tech 49 New Mexico 14--In what can only be described as an inept performance on both sides of the ball, the New Mexico Lobos lost 49-14 to the Texas Tech Red Raiders Saturday night in Lubbock, Texas. The Lobos were outgained 702-127 in total offense, 38-8 in first downs, and by nearly 10 minutes in the time of possession. Even with all that, the Lobos were only down 28-14 with 2:06 left in the first half after a Chase Clayton 98-yard kick return for a touchdown. The Lobos gave up 2 touchdowns in the final :34 of the first half and the rout was on. New Mexico looks to get back to .500 with a road trip to face bitter rival New Mexico State for the 103rd time in school history.

San Diego State 49 North Dakota 41--Under the scorching sun of San Diego, the San Diego State Aztecs
hung on for dear life with a 49-41 win over FCS foe North Dakota Saturday. The Aztecs had 533 yards of total offense with 292 coming on the ground including two backs running for 100+ on the day. The Aztecs gave up 434 yards passing to North Dakota and could not stop until the very end. SDSU quarterback Ryan Katz went 11-18 passing for 241 yards and three touchdowns during the game. Leon McFadden had a first quarter interception return for a touchdown to start the scoring for the Aztecs. San Diego State is now 2-1 and face local rival San Jose State who is also 2-1 on the season.

San Jose State 40 Colorado State 20--Letting an inferior Colorado State Rams squad hang around only down 11 in the 4th quarter, the San Jose State Spartans outscored the Rams 16-7 to win comfortably at 40-20 in San Jose, California Saturday night. The Spartans were the class of the game with 568 yards of total offense with 429 yards coming in the air with JUCO transfer David Fales going for a career high. The Spartans ended the night with three receivers going for 100+ yards on the night. The bright spot for the Rams was the play of Garrett Grayson who threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns. San Jose State heads down the road for a matchup with San Diego State Saturday night while Colorado State has a tough matchup with an angry Utah State squad.

Fresno State 69 Colorado 14--Despite having a quick cameo versus Pac 12 foe Colorado, Fresno State running back Robbie Rouse went wild with 9 carries for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns in the humiliating 69-14 win Saturday night in northern California. Quarterback Derek Carr went for another 300 yards and 5 touchdowns putting the junior at 832 yards passing and 8 touchdowns on the season. Fresno State came out with a 35-0 first quarter before building a halftime lead of 55-7 in front of the home fans. Rouse became the Fresno State all-time leading rusher with his 144 yards Saturday night. Fresno State is now 2-1 with a big non-conference game versus Colorado State before 8 straight conference games to finish the season.

Hawaii 54 Lamar 2--Hawaii finally got to experience a win under the tutelage of Norm Chow in a dominating 54-2 win over FCS squad Lamar Saturday night. The Warriors had 369 yards of total offense and a 95-yards kickoff return for a touchdown as well as forcing three Lamar turnovers in the win. The Warriors ran the ball 68% of the time in the game which completely flips the script for the offense Hawaii fans are used to. Hawaii plays fellow new MWC member Nevada before facing BYU in a Friday night ESPN game.
