Saturday, September 8
Texas Southern at North Texas: This is a game between North Texas of
the Sun Belt Conference and the FCS' Texas Southern. North Texas traveled to
play #3 LSU in the season opener and were thumped 41-14 in the game. The Mean
Green only completed 8 passes in the game. Texas Southern faced Prairie View
and won a wild game 44-41 that the Tigers won on a game ending field goal.
North Texas is looking to rebound and should be much more explosive offensively
than versus LSU. Expect the Mean Green to take a double digit lead in the
second quarter before blowing out Texas Southern in the second half.
Western Carolina at Marshall: This is a matchup between Marshall of
Conference USA and Western Carolina of the FCS. The two teams have a history
together with the overall series tied 9-9-2 with Marshall winning the most
recent matchup in 1996 by the score of 56-21. Marshall ran into a buzz saw last
week versus West Virginia and gave up 69 points to the in-state rival. The
Thundering Herd welcome Western Carolina and hope to get in the winning column
with a game versus Ohio coming up afterwards. Expect Marshall to take control
and win easily but not blow out Western Carolina.
Texas Tech at Texas State: This is a matchup of Texas State of the
Western Athletic Conference and Texas Tech of the Big 12. The two teams
previously met for the first time last season with Texas Tech rolling to a
50-10 victory versus the Bobcats. Texas State was the biggest surprise of the
first week of the season beating Houston by 17 points despite being huge
underdogs. The Bobcats put up 444 yards of total offense including Marcus
Curry's 131 yards and 2 touchdowns on 14 carries. Texas Tech cruised to an easy
opening day win versus the FCS' Northwestern State 44-6 with 500 yards of total
offense. Expect a letdown from Texas State after the strong opening performance
and Texas Tech to win easily in similar fashion to last season's 50-10 win.
Memphis at Arkansas State: This is a matchup between Memphis of
Conference USA and Arkansas State of the Sun Belt. The Memphis Tigers lead the
overall series 27-23-5 with Arkansas State winning the most recent matchup 47-3
in 2011. Memphis started this season in forgettable fashion with a 20-17 loss
to FCS' UT Martin. The Tigers could be one of the 2 or 3 worst teams in all of
the FBS this fall. Arkansas State was blindsided from the beginning in an
opening trip to Eugene, Oregon falling behind 50-10 at the half before losing
57-34 in the end. The Red Wolves are huge favorites versus Memphis and should
not have any trouble dispatching Memphis with a score along the lines of the
last meeting that saw Arkansas State in 47-3.
Florida Atlantic at Middle Tennessee: In this week's pillow fight of
the week, Florida Atlantic of the Sun Belt faces conference foe Middle
Tennessee in a week two game. The two teams have played 9 times overall with
MTSU leading the series 6-3 with a 38-14 win last fall on the road. Florida
Atlantic looked bad in their season opener despite winning in their 7-3 win
over the FCS' Wagner. The Owls turned the ball over 4 times in the game. MTSU had
a week to forget in opening the season with a loss to McNeese State of the FCS.
The Blue Raiders fell behind 24-6 after three quarters before making a comeback
that fell just short losing by 6 points. MTSU should bounce back with a win at
home versus FAU although it will not be pretty.
