Quarterback Dominique Blackman has been kicked off the Idaho football
team after a third failed drug test and tight end Taylor Elmo was suspended —
possibly for the rest of the year — for posting an inflammatory message on
Twitter in the wake of Robb Akey's firing, sources told The Spokesman-Review.
MOSCOW, Idaho — Jason Gesser expected his first week as Idaho's interim
football coach to be hectic. But he probably didn't think there would be this
much drama.
Quarterback Dominique Blackman has been kicked off the team following a
failed drug test and tight end Taylor Elmo was suspended — possibly for the
rest of the year — for posting an inflammatory message on Twitter in the wake
of Robb Akey's firing, sources told The Spokesman-Review.
Louisiana Tech:
LAS CRUCES - A study of the Louisiana Tech football offense brings
about some astounding statistics, results and an analysis to follow.
Such as quarterback Colby Cameron's 20 touchdowns and zero
interceptions through seven games of 2012. And the team's 30 rushing
touchdowns, despite running a spread-offense.
And, of course, the Bulldogs 56.14-points-per game average, which ranks
No. 1 in the country. Last Saturday the team led Idaho 56-21 at halftime,
eventually laying off the gas pedal in a 70-28 victory.
The past two games have seen Louisiana Tech score 127 points over a
76-minute span. Their opponent this week, the New Mexico State Aggies, have
scored 154 points over the course of their season.
"I thought I was playing the Green Bay Packers this week,"
NMSU head coach DeWayne Walker quipped when asked about gameplanning for the
Bulldogs attack.
Last year, on their way to an 8-5 record and Poinsettia Bowl berth, the
Bulldogs had an underrated defense and a solid offense that picked up once
Cameron was inserted into the lineup.
This year, while the defense isn't as strong as a season ago, the No.
24-ranked Bulldogs posses a highly-potent offensive attack.
New Mexico State:
AUBURN, Alabama -- New Mexico State's defense gave up 28 points last
week, and that might have been the Aggies' best performance of the season.
That's because New Mexico State was playing Louisiana Tech, an
explosive offensive attack that is averaging 52.6 points per game this season,
second in the nation only to Oregon.
For the most part, though, New Mexico State (1-7) has struggled,
allowing 460.9 yards per game, a mark that ranks 102nd in the country, and 33.5
points, 99th in the country.
The Aggies have had all kinds of trouble against the run, allowing
195.13 yards per game, a mark that ranks 96th nationally. In addition, New
Mexico State's pass defense is ninth at 265.8 yards per game.
San Jose State:
San Jose State sophomore linebacker Derek Muaava's season is over after
an MRI revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
He was injured while covering a punt return in the Spartans' 31-20 win
over Texas State last weekend.
"That's a tough loss," coach Mike MacIntyre said. "He's
a physical presence."
Muaava was a starting outside linebacker. He'll be replaced in the
lineup by redshirt freshman Hector Roach.
Also, cornerback Damon Ogburn Jr. (hamstring) returned to practice
after missing the past two games and will be available at Idaho on Saturday.
Before his injury, Ogburn was a starter at cornerback and an ace special teams
player.
Texas State:
Under the Lights
The Texas State football team will face off against the 7-1 Louisiana
Tech University Bulldogs Nov. 10 at 6:00 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium. It will be the
next and fifth home game for the team this year. The game will be televised on
the Longhorn Network and will be the last evening game Texas State plays. The
final home game for the Bobcats is slated for 3:00 p.m. against New Mexico
State University.
A Hefty Price
Floor seat prices for men and women’s basketball games for the
2012-2013 season were announced on Monday. For women’s basketball contests,
floor seats will cost $100 for the season. For men’s games, the season price is
$350. New floor seats were introduced last year at $350 for men’s games and
$200 for women’s games. Both teams’ home schedules begin Friday Nov. 9.
The Finish Line
The Texas State men and women’s cross country teams participated last
weekend in the WAC Championships, finishing eighth and seventh respectively.
The two teams’ best finishes came at the Concordia Invitational. The women
placed first, paced by senior Michelle Jones’ first place finish in the
5,000-meter run. The men finished third as a team at Concordia.
Utah State:
A month ago, Utah State found itself almost in full panic over an
offense that scored merely a field goal in a loss to BYU.
Those days seem far away now.
Led by Chuckie Keeton and Kerwynn Williams, the Aggies have become a
more explosive and well-rounded offensive team with each passing week. They
defeated Texas San-Antonio 48-17 on Saturday, the third consecutive game in
which the team has scored at least 30 points. They have looked dominant against
Western Athletic Conference competition.
Now, the rest of the country is starting to take notice, as the Aggies
received four votes in the USA Today coaches poll on Sunday.
"I really liked the focus that we showed," USU head coach
Gary Andersen said. "We came here to take care of business and that’s what
we did. We have a number of kids from the state of Texas and we were excited to
play here. But we looked at this as a business trip and I’m proud of the kids
for playing well."
UTSA:
UTSA coach Larry Coker said Tuesday he anticipates quarterback Eric
Soza will be cleared to play this weekend at Louisiana Tech. Soza (right hip
fracture) has missed the past two games.
Also, receiver Brandon Freeman (shoulder) is expected to return after
missing the past four games.
Officials said kicker Sean Ianno (hip muscle) and safety Mauricio
Sanchez (groin) are out.
Ianno, whose 51-yard field goal won the game at South Alabama, has been
out four games in a row.
