San Jose State Spring Practice Spring Game


In San Jose State University’s 109-play Spring Football Game, the defense came up with four takeaways and was credited with five quarterback sacks, the offense scored five touchdowns, and the kickers converted 2-of-3 field goal tries to conclude the Spartans’ 2013 spring practice.


Head coach Ron Caragher continued his approach of playing the first string offense against the first team defense all the way through the number-three offense against the number-three defense in the team’s 2013 Spring Game. The first half consisted of long-drive opportunities for the offense. In the second half, red-zone chances and two-minute drills were added to the mix.

The offense gained 461 yards, but averaged just 4.3 yards per play. Five quarterbacks led by senior David Fales and junior Blake Jurich combined to complete 41-of-60 passes with three interceptions for 366 yards and four touchdowns. Fales, the most accurate Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) passer last season, was 19-of-31 with an interception for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Jurich was 11-of-15 with an interception for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Cornerbacks Bene Benwikeré, Dasheon Frierson and Jimmy Pruitt came up with interceptions for the defense. Defensive tackle David Catalano recovered an Alvin Jelks fumble. Jelks was the busiest ball carrier with 14 carries for 39 yards and a 4-yard touchdown run for the first score of the Spring Game.

Kicker Harrison Waid converted field goals of 43 and 27 yards for the remaining scores.
