As part of a new series with www.fanduel.com, we will take a look at college football fantasy football. All conferences will be mentioned in these updates but we will try to focus on the Non-AQ teams more often than not. Today, we will look at the Louisville Cardinals.
Buy Or Sell: Louisville Cardinals
After putting on a clinic against the Florida Gators in the Sugar Bowl, the hype machine has picked up a lot of steam for the 2013 Louisville Cardinals. With Heisman candidate Teddy Bridgewater leading the offense and a favorable schedule, can the Cardinals actually be legitimate title contenders?
While there are at least a few teams better on paper than Louisville at this point in time, Louisville is blessed with a depleted schedule in a weak American Athletic Conference. They only really have one somewhat difficult test out of conference, as they open the season against the Ohio Bobcats.
A total of 19 starters return for Louisville, and that is not even including Florida transfers Robert Clark and Gerald Christian. They will also get running back Dominique Brown back after missing last season with a knee injury, who if fully recovered could put up some numbers to get the fantasy football fans out there excited. With all that said, there are plenty of reasons to be at least a little hesitant when picking them to make a title game run.
For starters, they did not exactly dominate teams last season. Their two losses were at Syracuse by 20 points, and Connecticut by three points in triple overtime. They also won six games by a touchdown or less, meaning they were not head and shoulders better than their opposition.
The schedule is just too nice to ignore though. Their road American Athletic Conference games are Temple, USF, Connecticut and Cincinnati. The Huskies and Bearcats gave them the most issues last season, but neither return nearly as much. Rutgers on five days rest can be a bit tricky, but fortunately for them, the Scarlet Knights will also be coming off a short week.
Obviously, it is difficult to run the table no matter how easy a schedule might look. Louisville has not had a ton of football success historically, and expectations could wear on the club. With that being said, a one or even two-loss season should still put them in a nice bowl game. Buy the Cardinals to at least have a shot to run the table, but chances are they lose one of those games in November and end up as a fringe BCS bowl team.
