Western Kentucky: Post-Spring 2013

WKU Football:

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU is featured prominently in Phil Steele’s 2013 Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Team as four Hilltoppers have earned First Team honors from the publication. Overall, 10 WKU players were honored in 12 different positional slots. The publication announced the All-Sun Belt Team on Tuesday in advance of the release of their annual Phil Steele’s 2013 College Football Preview Magazine scheduled to hit newsstands on June 18.

Senior running back Antonio Andrews, senior center Sean Conway, senior linebacker Andrew Jackson and junior safety Jonathan Dowling all earned First Team honors from Steele. Andrews also earned Second Team honors as a punt returner and Third Team honors as a kick returner. Andrews was previously named a Third Team All-America selection in 2012 by Steele as an all-purpose performer.

Andrews led WKU in all-purpose yards (3,161), rushing yards (1,728), touchdowns (15), scoring (90), kick return yards (726), punt return yards (234) and carries (304) in 2012. His 3,161 all-purpose yards were the most in school history and the second-highest total ever behind 1988 Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders. Andrews and Sanders are the only two players in NCAA history to eclipse 3,000 all-purpose yards in a single season. Andrews also broke WKU’s single-season rushing record and led the Sun Belt Conference with 1,728 yards while making WKU the fifth program in NCAA history to post three consecutive 1,500 yards rushers (Bobby Rainey 2010-11).

Conway started every game on the WKU schedule in 2012 for the third-straight season, tallying 13 starts on the year to bringing his career total to 37. He took every offensive snap for the second-straight season and was one of three Hilltopper offensive linemen to start each game. Conway propelled WKU to the third best rushing offense in the Sun Belt Conference at 181.7 yards per game, helping ball carriers to an average of 4.7 yards per carry. He aided Andrews to a single-season WKU record of 1,728 rushing yards, including another school-record 10 100-yard rushing performances. He also blocked for quarterback Kawaun Jakes who set WKU’s single-season record for passing touchdowns with 22.

Jackson followed up his breakout sophomore campaign with an even better showing in his junior season in 2012, leading WKU in tackles (122), forced fumbles (4) and quarterback hits (3). He was named first-team All-Sun Belt Conference for the second-straight season, leading the Hilltoppers in tackling on six different occasions, making him WKU’s leading tackler in 14 of the last 26 games he has played. His 17.5 tackles for loss ranked second on the team behind sack artist Quanterus Smith’s 18.5.

Dowling emerged as one of WKU’s top playmakers during his first season on the Hill in 2012, racking up a team-high six interceptions and recording 68 tackles on his way to being named a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference defensive back. He intercepted six passes during the 2012 season, a mark that ranked fifth nationally. He started 11 games, tallying five or more tackles in seven-of-12 games played, including a career high 10 on an ESPNU game versus Middle Tennessee.

Sophomore tight end Mitchell Henry, senior linebacker Xavius Boyd, senior cornerback Tyree Robinson were named to the second team while senior offensive lineman Luis Polanco, junior offensive tackle Cameron Clemmons and senior safety Kiante Young were named to the third team.

Season tickets, along with tickets to the season opener against Kentucky on August 31 in Nashville, Tenn. at L.P. Field, are on sale now through WKUSports.com, or by calling 1-800-5 BIG RED.
