According to 247 sports, the Georgia Southern Eagles currently have the 89th ranked recruiting class in the nation and the 4th ranked class in the Sun Belt Conference. Due in large part to being in the football hotbed of Georgia, the Eagles have been able to only go out of state for 6 players, with four of those commits coming from nearby Florida. 13 of the overall commits are from the state of Georgia.

The Eagles, still in the transitional mode of FCS to FBS, were one of the most pleasant surprises in college football in 2014 in winning the Sun Belt Conference title in their very first attempt. The Eagles finished the season 9-3 with a one-point loss to NC State and a four point loss to Georgia Tech. Due to NCAA rules, the Eagles were ineligible for postseason activities and had to end their season at 12 games.
