Overview:
The 49ers will be starting their first season as a member of the FBS as a member of Conference USA in 2015. As per NCAA rules, UNCC will not be eligible for any bowls or championships this fall and this season is more of a trial run to get used to the FBS level of football.

In the two previous seasons as a program, the 49ers have yet to play an FBS school of any sort so there is a sense of complete blindness going into the move to Conference USA football in the fall. UNCC plays in Jerry Richardson Stadium, a stadium that holds 15,000 but is set up to expand to hold up to 40,000 fans.

Offensively, the 49ers had no trouble scoring the football led by running back Kalif Phillips and wide receiver Austin Duke. The duo combined for over 2,800 yards of total offense and 29 touchdowns on the season. Book, Casey and Convington all return on the offensive line after making all 11 starts in 2014. How the other two sports are to be filled will be up for grabs but LaBianca and Barr both made 5 starts in the 2014 season and look ready to find a bigger role in 2015.

Defensively, UNCC will need to make some strides in 2015 if they are going to be competitive in 2015 with the explosive offenses of Conference USA. The defensive backfield will be interesting to watch as Dozier, Cunningham, and Norman combined for 30 starts but no other defensive back made more than one start in 2014. That fourth spot will be important to fill in as soon as possible with players needed for nickel, dime and backup roles with CUSA being a pass happy league for the most part.

The kicking game just needs to improve slightly in 2015 to give the 49ers a significant lift. Brewer was 18-25 on field goal attempts but only 7-13 from outside of 30 yards. He must improve on his accuracy from beyond 30 yards as well as his power with only 11 of his 77 kickoffs being downed for touchbacks. Hart was a pleasant surprise in 2014 with a 36.6 yards per punt average as a true freshman. With another year in the program, it is expected to see his average creep to 40 yards or more, giving UNCC a chance to flip the field versus opponents.

Overall, the UNCC fanbase cannot expect too much out of the 49ers this fall with it being their first year as a FBS program and their first year playing any FBS program at all. Any more than a couple of wins would be a significant accomplishment this fall.
