What Friday G5 games should you watch?

In the 2015 season, there will be 37 games involving G5 programs played on Friday night. I have divided them into three tiers: first tier consisting of the top ten G5 games to watch, second tier consisting of games that should not be that close but could be very exciting with possible upsets, and third tier consisting of the worst 13 games involving G5 teams on Friday nights. Those are games not to watch.

First Tier Games (Top 10): These games are the cream of the Friday night crop. Lots of matchups that not only G5 fans but college football fans in general will be watching.

  • Marshall at Western Kentucky: The premier G5 game of the season. The Hilltoppers ended the hopes of Marshall's undefeated season in a 67-66 thriller. Marshall is out for revenge in a matchup of the projected two best teams in Conference USA this fall.
  • Utah State at Utah: This in-start matchup between the Aggies and Utes has been played 111 times overall but only two times since 2010. The two teams split those games and head to Salt Lake with high hopes for both teams. Should be a defensive struggle.
  • Washington at Boise State: The return of Chris Peterson to Boise as an opponent is enough to get many people excited. Add in the factor that the Huskies are making the trip to Idaho for the first time and both teams have very high expectation and this game becomes a huge national Friday night game.
  • Georgia Southern at Appalachian State: The two youngest members of the Sun Belt took the conference by storm in 2014 with the Eagles taking the conference title in year one. Appalachian State was one of the hottest teams in the nation down the stretch and seem to have found its identity at the FBS level. This could be the game of the year in the Sun Belt.
  • Boise State at Virginia: One of the most impressive attributes of Boise State is the willingness to play anyone anywhere and that is extremely evident in the matchup versus Virginia. The Broncos head cross country to play the Cavaliers who have struggled in the last few years but are expected to be improved this fall and should be a very solid team.
  • Louisiana Tech at Rice: A battle between arguably the two best teams in the CUSA West division, Rice is looking for payback after a 76-31 drubbing at the hands of the Bulldogs last fall. This game is played in Houston and has to be a game the Rice program has been waiting all season to play. Should be a fun game and much closer than last season's 45 point margin.
  • Massachusetts at Buffalo: One of two Friday night MAC games to make the list, the Minutemen bring one of the most explosive passing games in the nation to upstate New York versus the Bulls. Buffalo has won the last three meetings (all FBS games) but Massachusetts should be one of the surprise teams of the MAC and could easily pull the road upset.
  • Rice at UTEP: In what looks to be the battle for second place in the CUSA West Division, the Owls and Miners meet for the 19th time since 1996 with Rice holding a 12-6 overall advantage. Rice holds the last four wins but UTEP was much improved in 2014 and could make this game in El Paso one of the more fun games of the upcoming season.
  • Navy at Houston: One of the best rushing attacks in the nation led by touchdown machine Keenan Reynolds, Navy faces Houston for the first time since 1980. Houston had an excellent defense in 2014 but must prove that they can play disciplined enough to slow down the Midshipmen option attack.
  • Western Michigan at Toledo: This "Black Friday" matchup between the Broncos and Rockets should go a long way in determining if Toledo will finally win the MAC West over Northern Illinois. Last season's 20-19 overtime loss is still smarting for the Broncos and they want badly to end Toledo's five game winning streak in the series.

Second Tier Games: These games should not be in doubt but we could get some entertaining games with some possible upsets.

  • Air Force at Boise State
  • Memphis at South Florida
  • Charlotte at Georgia State
  • Southern Miss at Marshall
  • Western Kentucky at North Texas
  • Temple at East Carolina
  • East Carolina at Connecticut
  • Cincinnati at South Florida
  • South Florida at UCF
  • Eastern Michigan at Central Michigan
  • Kent State at Akron
  • Troy at Georgia State
  • Tulsa at Tulane
  • Colorado at Hawaii

Third Tier Games: These games should be blowouts with one team completely overmatched from the opening kickoff. Upset likelihood is extremely low in these games.

  • Michigan State at Western Michigan
  • Temple at SMU
  • Wyoming at Utah State
  • Boise State at San Jose State
  • BYU at San Jose State
  • Fordham at Army
  • Idaho State at Boise State
  • Temple at Charlotte
  • Kent State at Illinois
  • New Mexico at Arizona State
  • Connecticut at BYU
  • Miami at Florida Atlantic
  • Baylor at SMU
