MAC News and Notes: 8/20/12

Akron:
The Zips football team held an 100-plus play intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday morning at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field. Similar to the squad's scrimmage on Wednesday, today's session featured a variety of situational sequences.

Ball State:
Ball State's football team wrapped up its Fall Camp Sunday, but will continue preparations for the Aug. 30, season opener as classes begin Monday.
The Cardinal will face Eastern Michigan in a Mid-American Conference game in the season opener at Scheumann Stadium in a 7 p.m. Thursday night game on the 30th.
After the 8 a.m. Sunday practice, Ball State head coach Pete Lembo made some comments on the day's session.

Bowling Green:
The Bowling Green State University football team completed its second and final scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday night. Following practice we spoke to head coach Dave Clawson and running back John Pettigrew.

Buffalo:
Head coach Jeff Quinn announced that junior quarterback Alex Zordich will start UB's season opener at Georgia on Sep. 1.

Central Michigan:
MOUNT PLEASANT — Eight uniform combinations, including all-black and all-gold uniforms, for the 2012 Central Michigan football season were debuted in a surprise presentation during an evening football team gathering in the Intercollegiate Athletics Center’s football team meeting room Wednesday night.
Designed by Adidas, the new uniform line features four outfits with the same color jersey and pants - black, gold, maroon and white - and four additional combinations created from mixing and matching the gold, maroon and white items. See the photo gallery for a complete look at all of the possible combinations.

Eastern Michigan:
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team received a day off from practice Sunday, Aug. 19, but instead the player and coaches participated in media/photo day at Rynearson Stadium.
The Eagles lined up to have their photo taken on the field, as well as all of the EMU newcomers posed with Head Coach Ron English for their usual freshmen photo. Following that the squad moved into group shots along with taking the complete team photo with the 2012 senior class sitting front and center.

Kent State:
KENT, Ohio – The desperation heave to the end zone from freshman quarterback Colin Reardon (Poland, Ohio) was broken up by junior cornerback Darius Polk(Lynchburg, Va.), sealing a 67-60 victory for the defense and the right to wear the navy blue practice jerseys throughout the 2012 season after a highly competitive jersey scrimmage against the offense Saturday (Aug. 18) at Dix Stadium.
Sophomore cornerback Dylan Farrington (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and freshman safety Jordan Italiano (Canfield, Ohio) each killed drives by the offense by recording interceptions. The defense posted four sacks in the win.

Massachusetts:
Media members from across the state came to McGuirk Stadium on Wednesday as the UMass football team held its annual Media Day. One of the day's highlight was the debut of one of the Minutemen's new uniform combinations for the 2012 campaign.
Head Coach Charley Molnar, assistant coaches and players all spoke to media members throughout the afternoon. The Minutemen also took head shots, position group shots, and video board shots for Gillette Stadium.

Miami OH:
OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami's football team continued its preparations for the season opener at Ohio State in two weeks with a lengthy scrimmage Saturday morning at Yager Stadium. The RedHawks ran more than 150 offensive plays during the two-hour plus session.
In contrast to last week when the defense dominated, the Miami offense showed signs of life. With the focus on the running game, sophomore walk-on Robert Williams III gained 98 yards on the ground, including the longest play from scrimmage the entire day, a 59-yarder. Austin Boucher threw two touchdown passes, both from 25 yards out. The first went to David Frazier, while the second was hauled in by Willie Culpepper.

Northern Ilinois:
DeKALB, Ill. - Two weeks before kicking off the 2012 season at Soldier Field versus Iowa, Northern Illinois held a 90-minute scrimmage in full pads Saturday at Huskie Stadium under perfect weather conditions. With NIU's top two receivers - Martel Moore and Perez Ashford - given the day off, the Huskie defense got the better of the offense most of the day during the run-oriented workout.
Northern Illinois Head Coach Dave Doeren said the fact that NIU defense has the upper hand at this point is not surprising, given that the Huskies return experienced players at every position on defense and the offense did not have a single returning starter from 2011 on the field Saturday.

Ohio:
The Ohio University football team participated in its second scrimmage Saturday morning inside Peden Stadium. Following the scrimmage, Ohio head coach Frank Solich, quarterback Tyler Tettleton and wide receiver Chase Cochran stopped by to talk with reporters.
The Bobcat defensive unit shined as it sacked Ohio quarterbacks six times and redshirt sophomore Nathan Carpenter registered one interception. Redshirt sophomore Kendric Smith collected a pair of sacks. In two scrimmages during preseason camp, Smith has totaled three sacks.
Freshman quarterback JD Sprague led the way offensively as he went 6-of-8 for 72 yards. Redshirt freshman Derrius Vick threw the only touchdown pass of the scrimmage as he hit redshirt senior Ryan Clark in the back of the endzone for a two-yard pitch and catch.

Toledo:
A pair of talented senior inside linebackers, Dan Molls and Robert Bell, are the heart and soul of the defense.
Molls finished 10th in the nation with 143 tackles in 2010, earning third-team All-MAC honors. The early portion of his junior season was derailed, however, by a leg injury that caused him to miss six games. He returned to play the final five games in ship shape, averaging nearly 11 tackles per contest. Bell was solid all season long, finishing second on the team with 78 tackles and forcing a team-best four fumbles.
Molls and Bell are two of the reasons head coach Matt Campbell is so high on the Rockets' defense.
"Danny Molls and Robert Bell are the foundation of our defense," said Cambell. "Those two guys have a great nose for the football, they understand the game and they bring that attitude to our defense. Danny is a sure tackler and a leader. He's exactly the kind of guy you need as a middle linebacker on your football team. Robert has been making players since his freshman year, but he really came into his own last year."

Western Michigan:
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - When head coach Bill Cubit called the team for the customary 'all up' to signal the end of practice, the first thing he did was check his watch.  It was 11:49 a.m.
There isn't much significance to that exact time of the morning but in two weeks there will be.  He told the team that at this time in two weeks, we will be 49 minutes into the 2012 season opener at Illinois (the game begins at 11 a.m. CDT).
The message was clear.  Time is of the essence to prepare for not only the opener against yet another Big Ten opponent (its 12th from the conference during Cubit's tenure), but also the entire 2012 campaign.
