WAC News and Notes: 8/21/12

Idaho:
MOSCOW, Idaho – All the talk has been about the quarterbacks during the University of Idaho’s fall football camp. Thursday afternoon in the Vandals’ final scrimmage before the season begins in earnest, it was the running backs who garnered the attention.
Senior Ryan Bass and redshirt freshman Todd Handley powered a running game that hasn’t been the featured attraction until Thursday with 68 yards each in an effort that netted 174. Take out the quarterback sacks, and the running backs covered 221 yards. Bass showed the rugged durability needed in the middle, while Handley, once again, had some razzle, dazzle and elusiveness in a 55-yard scoring run.

Louisiana Tech:
RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech's defense stood tall Monday at Joe Aillet Stadium as the team held its final general fall camp practice before beginning focused preparations on Texas A&M.
Monday was the team's final general practice as the team will start focusing Tuesday on the season opener against Texas A&M.
"Defensively, I thought we flew around and looked sharp," said head coach Sonny Dykes. "It is good to see those guys come out and play fast. I think that is the fastest we have played on that side of the ball. We made more plays today, created some turnovers and did some good things. I like the way we ran around there. Offensively, we didn't execute as well as we needed to but part of that equation is that our defense really flew around. It was good to see that."

New Mexico State:
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The 2012 New Mexico State Football team held practice No. 19 on Monday afternoon. The Aggies were on the practice field for just over two hours.
NM State ran conditioning and position drills at the beginning of practice. The end of the session was the offense battling the defense in scrimmage packages in preparation for the morning two-a-day session on Tuesday.
The Aggies will be back on the practice field Tuesday for a morning scrimmage in full pads from 9:15-11:30 a.m. The team will follow that up in the afternoon with a walk-through session in helmets beginning at 4 p.m.

San Jose State:
Kent Baer is in his third season as San Jose State University football's defensive coordinator and fifth year on the Spartans' coaching staff.
San Jose State is the seventh Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school in which he served as a defensive coordinator.
Baer talks about how the Spartans' defense is coming together for 2012 and one of his signature trademarks - creating opponent turnovers.

Texas State:
San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State University Department of Athletics has announced that single-game tickets and promotions for all six of its 2012 home football games, including its Sept. 8 home-opener against Texas Tech, will go on sale to the general public beginning Wednesday, Aug. 15.

Utah State:
Utah State held its third and final scrimmage of fall camp Saturday afternoon on Merlin Olsen Field inside Romney Stadium as part of Aggie Football Family Fun Day, sponsored by Macey's. In all, fourth year head coach Gary Andersen ran his team through 70 plays, which included special teams, red zone and two-minute situations.
Aggie Football Family Fun Day started at 9 a.m. with youth football games and there were activities on the concourse, including sales by the USU Bookstore, along with games for fans of all ages, and fans could also purchase and pick-up season tickets. After the scrimmage, fans were allowed on the field to meet and get autographs from USU football players and coaches, as well as participate in games and activities.
"It's great for our kids to be out in front of fans," said Andersen. "I appreciate everyone who came. It was three quick practices back-to-back-to-back and they handled it well. We'll give them a day off and be back on Monday. We've still got a week of camp and we'll get ready to play."

UTSA:
DALLAS — FOX Sports (FS) Southwest announced Friday that it will televise a weekly 30-minute magazine show this fall titled "UTSA Football Insider" that once again will feature the school's football program.
The series will premiere with a special edition at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27. The show then will begin its regular time slot the following week at 4:30 p.m. each Thursday throughout the season.
Veteran FS Southwest sportscaster Bill Land will host the program and will be joined by UTSA head coach Larry Coker and his staff to provide analysis on the Roadrunners as they enter their second season of competition.
