MAC:
Miami (OH) 27, Massachusetts 16: Playing their best game since jumping
up to the FBS, the Massachusetts Minutemen came up just short losing to fellow MAC
member Miami OH Saturday. The Minutemen outgained the RedHawks 471-408 but
turned the ball over 3 times in the loss. Miami OH improves to 2-2 with a trip
to Akron coming up this Saturday while UMass falls to 0-4 with a matchup versus
undefeated Ohio on the horizon.
Virginia Tech 37, Bowling Green 0: Never able to get anything going,
the Bowling Green Falcons took one on the chin losing 37-0 to Virginia Tech
Saturday. The Falcons turned the ball over twice, failed on three 4th down
conversions and only connected on 4-16 third down conversions. This loss drops
Bowling Green to 1-3 with a Saturday afternoon home matchup versus FCS foe
Rhode Island coming up.
Central Michigan 32, Iowa 31: Failing on a two-point conversion attempt
with only :45 left leaving them down 31-29, the Central Michigan Chippewas were
desperate versus Big 10 foe Iowa. That
desperation saw CMU attempt and recover an onside kick before driving and
kicking a 47-yard field goal as time expired to win 32-31 in Iowa City, Iowa.
The Chippewas had nearly 400 yards of total offense and no turnovers in the
upset win. CMU improves to 2-1 and start conference play on the road Saturday
versus Northern Illinois.
Ohio 44, Norfolk State 10: Despite holding out star quarterback Tyler
Tettleton, the Ohio Bobcats kept the machine running in a 44-10 victory over
the FCS' Norfolk State. Derrius Vick, starting for the first time, threw for
199 yards and 4 touchdowns while the defense forced 5 turnovers in the blowout
win. Ohio improves to 4-0 with a trip to the northeast to face new MAC member
UMass Saturday afternoon.
Western Michigan 30, Connecticut 24: Proving that last season's win was
not a fluke, the Western Michigan Broncos took care of things in beating the
Big East's UConn Saturday afternoon. The Broncos lead by 13 with 1:00 left but
gave up a touchdown and handled an onside kick attempt to win the game.
Quarterback Alex Carder threw for 237 yards and a touchdown in the win. WMU
improves to 2-2 with the dangerous Toledo Rockets coming to town Saturday.
No. 21 Michigan State 23, Eastern Michigan 7: Holding a 7-6 lead over
the #21 Michigan State Spartans at the half, the Eastern Michigan Eagles were
outscored 16-0 in the second half of a 23-7 loss Saturday afternoon. The Eagles
only gained 137 yards of total offense and 8 first downs in a flat out horrible
offensive display. This loss drops the Eagles to 0-4 with a desperately needed
bye week before facing Kent State at home on October 6th.
Northern Illinois 30, Kansas 23: Showing why the Husky fan base was so
excited to see him play, Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch threw for
235 yards and ran for another 134 accounting for 2 touchdowns in the 30-23
victory over the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday. The Huskies outgained Kansas by over
100 yards behind a very even offense in the win. Northern Illinois is now 3-1
with a home game versus fellow Saturday winner CMU next week.
Ball State 31, South Florida 27: Behind a spectacular touchdown catch
by receiver Willie Snead, the Ball State Cardinals knocked off their second
straight AQ team in defeating the South Florida Bulls Saturday in Muncie,
Indiana. The Cardinals were outgained 518-413 but benefitted from 2 South
Florida turnovers in the game. Snead ended the night with 11 catches for 135 yards
in the win. Ball State improves to 3-1 with a Saturday afternoon trip to 2-1
Kent State.
Toledo 38, Coastal Carolina 28: The Toledo Rockets played by far their
worst game of the season in beating FCS opponent Coastal Carolina 38-28
Saturday night. The Rockets totaled 432 yards of offense but only 76 on the
ground and allowed Coastal Carolina to gain 402 in the win. Quarterback
Terrance Owens broke the 1000 yards passing plateau in the win. This win
improves Toledo to 3-1 with a tough trip to Western Michigan Saturday night.
Tennessee 47, Akron 26: Tied at 23 at the half and only down 30-26
early in the 4th quarter, the Akron Zips gave up the final 17 points in a 47-26
loss to the Tennessee Volunteers Saturday night. Akron had 344 yards of total
offense but three costly turnovers that killed any possible chances of an Akron
upset bid. Avis Commack took a Tennessee pass in the opening
minute 44 yards for an Akron defensive score. The Zips fall to 1-3 with a home
matchup versus Miami OH Saturday afternoon upcoming.
