Utah State:
Utah State football players Chuckie Keeton and Tyler Bennett were
honored by the Western Athletic Conference Monday as Keeton was named the
league’s offensive player of the week, and Bennett was named the conference’s
special teams player of the week.
For Keeton, it is the second time in his career he has garnered WAC
Player of the Week accolades, while Bennett is receiving the honor for the
first time in his career. The last time USU had a WAC special teams player of
the week was during the 2007 season when Kevin Robinson won the award as a kick
returner.
UTSA:
According to the old football cheer, “V” is for victory. But with the
UTSA Roadrunners, it also stands for versatility.
Despite circumstances that have led to a number of position changes
since the start of fall camp, the Roadrunners will take a 2-0 record into
Saturday's game in Atlanta against Georgia State.
UTSA coach Larry Coker applauded his players for making the
adjustments.
“They really have to buy into what we're trying to do,” Coker said.
“We're not just moving guys to move guys. We're trying to get our best players
on the field in certain areas.”
Louisiana Tech:
RUSTON — First impressions last a lifetime, according to an old cliche,
but Louisiana Tech football coach Sonny Dykes might settle for four years.
Several newcomers lived up to — and arguably exceeded — high
expectations in the Bulldogs' 56-49 victory, and freshman running backs Kenneth
Dixon and Tevin King were right at the forefront.
"You worry about playing true freshmen just because, 'Are you
going to see the same thing you have seen in practice in the game?'" Dykes
said. "That was a concern, but I thought they both responded very well.
They did what we asked them to do and, again, they took care of the ball, which
is critical."
New Mexico State:
LAS CRUCES - The rivalry alone would make this weekend's New Mexico
State at Texas-El Paso football game one of great importance.
Against one of the Aggies chief rivals - the Miners or New Mexico Lobos
hold that top billing - in a city located just south of Las Cruces, when these
two teams meet this Saturday at 6 p.m. it will be a critical contest for both
outfits and communities.
"They're 45 minutes away. Their fans are always out here and some
of our fans are out there," said NMSU linebacker Bryan Bonilla. "It
gives us bragging rights. People don't let us forget who we're playing this whole
week. It's huge for us."
San Jose State:
SAN JOSE -- San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre finally is seeing his
team display a closing mentality, something that's been sorely missing the past
two years.
The Spartans needed two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the
first half to take the lead over UC Davis. But once SJSU had the advantage, it
didn't let up.
The defense forced two second-half turnovers, and the offense scored on
its first five possessions of the second half (and seven straight drives total)
to win going away. The 45-13 win Saturday was the Spartans' largest margin of
victory since 2007.
Texas State:
The aftermath may be overwhelmingly negative after a much-anticipated
game, such as the one Texas State students have been talking about for almost a
year, ends poorly. However, there were some positive thoughts following the
Texas Tech match.
The Red Raiders handled the Bobcats the entirety of the game after the
first three and a half minutes, which excited maroon and gold wearers that day.
On a positive note, the Bobcats were able to force a fourth down on Texas
Tech’s first series in which the Red Raiders fumbled. For the other 56 and a
half minutes, the Bobcats were playing catch-up.
In a “David vs. Goliath” level of a matchup, the Bobcats had to come
out swinging—which they did.
“We were ready to play Texas Tech last season, but we were not ready to
win,” Coach Dennis Franchione said before the recent game against the Red
Raiders.
Idaho:
THE RECORDS
The Vandals are 0-2 after a home loss to Eastern Washington followed by
a loss on the road at Bowling Green State. LSU is 2-0 after opening with home
victories over North Texas and Washington.
