WAC Weekend Results


San Jose State 40 Colorado State 20--Letting an inferior Colorado State Rams squad hang around only down 11 in the 4th quarter, the San Jose State Spartans outscored the Rams 16-7 to win comfortably at 40-20 in San Jose, California Saturday night. The Spartans were the class of the game with 568 yards of total offense with 429 yards coming in the air with JUCO transfer David Fales going for a career high. The Spartans ended the night with three receivers going for 100+ yards on the night. The bright spot for the Rams was the play of Garrett Grayson who threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns. San Jose State heads down the road for a matchup with San Diego State Saturday night while Colorado State has a tough matchup with an angry Utah State squad.

UTEP 41 New Mexico State 28--After doing virtually nothing on offense in the first two games of the season, the UTEP Miners finally got rolling with 487 yards of offense including 300 yards and 4 touchdowns in the air from quarterback Nick Lamaison. New Mexico State played a solid game on offense but dug themselves into such a big hole with the 20-0 deficit after one period. The Aggies pulled to within 13-points midway through the 3rd quarter but gave up the next 14-points in getting routed by rival UTEP. UTEP takes their 1-2 record to Camp Randall Stadium to face Wisconsin while the New Mexico State Aggies try to even their record at 2-2 with a huge rivalry game at home versus New Mexico.

Louisiana Tech 56 Rice 37--A week after putting up 56-points versus the Houston Cougars, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs added another 56-points to the scoring sheet in a 56-37 non-conference game versus the Rice Owls in Ruston, Louisiana. The Bulldogs jumped quickly to a 21-0 first quarter lead on the back of a balanced attack that totaled 276 yards in the air and 333 on the ground including 204 yards from freshman Tevin King. Rice kicker Chris Boswell tied a school record with a 57-yard field goal at the end of the first half. Louisiana Tech tries to stay undefeated with a trip to Big Ten foe Illinois while the Owls of Rice begin conference play versus the #1 passing offense in the country of Marshall.

UTSA 38 Georgia State 14--Using a balanced attack on offense and solid play from the defense, the UTSA Roadrunners moved to 3-0 with a 38-14 win over the FCS' Georgia State Panthers. The Roadrunners spread the ball around with 9 players attempting rushes and 10 players making catches on the night. The UTSA defense also forced 4 Georgia State turnovers including 3 interceptions during the game. Quarterback Eric Soza threw for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns and added 51 yards on the ground in the win. UTSA puts their undefeated record on the line Saturday versus Northwestern Oklahoma State in the Alamodome.

LSU 63 Idaho 14--With 2 second quarter touchdowns, the Idaho Vandals pulled to within 7 points of #3 LSU before giving up the next 42 points in a 63-14 loss Saturday night. The Vandals ended the night with only 213 yards of total offense and a paltry 39 yards on the ground for the night. Idaho also went 3-14 on third down and turned the ball over 4 times to the Tigers who scored 2 defensive touchdowns in the game. At 0-3, the Vandals face an important game versus Wyoming that will make or break the season for the Roadrunners.

Wisconsin 16 Utah State 14--On the road dominating Wisconsin, the Utah State Aggies let a win slip through their fingers when a 38-yard field goal attempt was missed allowing Wisconsin to skate away with a 16-14 win in Madison, Wisconsin Saturday. The Aggies had 70 more yards than the Badgers with Wisconsin running back Monte Ball taking 37 carries to get 139 yards rushing. The play of the game was an 82-yard punt return by Kenzel Doe that cut the lead to 14-10 in the third quarter. Utah State will try to get back in the win column versus a poor Colorado State team at Hughes Stadium.
