Week 5 Preview: Houston versus Rice

Saturday, September 29
3:30 PM Houston vs. Rice:

This is a Conference USA matchup between the Houston Cougars and the Rice Owls. Houston enters this game at 0-3 giving up a horrible 41 points per game, good for 5th worst in the nation so far. The Cougars are missing the big play potential from the running game that was so helpful in the great 2011 season. The Cougars are 6th nationally in passing but 97th nationally in rushing. Houston has only found the end zone on a regular basis in the season's 2nd game versus Louisiana Tech while averaging 9.5 points per game in the other matchups. Rice enters at 1-3 behind a balanced offense that averages 470 yards per game and a very impressive 34.3 points scored per game. The offense is looking very impressive and does not waste opportunities to score. The defense is the Achilles heel for the Owls giving up a FBS worst 45.8 points per game including 49 to UCLA, 56 to Louisiana Tech and 54 to Marshall. This is the 39th overall meeting between the two schools with Houston holding a 27-11 overall series edge. This has the potential to be one of the wildest games of the weekend with two explosive offenses facing two poor defenses. Expect fireworks in a game that I think Rice pulls out in the end. 51-48.
