Richmond's Sun Belt Resume

 Richmond:

 E. Claiborne Robins Stadium

School Founded: 1830

Location: Richmond, VA

Football Founded: 1881

Current Conference: Colonial Athletic Association

Facilities: 8,700 seat E. Claiborne Robins Stadium.

On December 19, 2008, Spider Football and its energized faithful realized the dream of winning a national championship. What they didn't realize was that on that same red-letter day another dream emerged. A small, non-descript concrete grandstand was razed to the ground. Rising from that rubble and nestled amongst the tall trees and brick buildings of the picturesque University of Richmond campus 20 months later is another dream come true - E. Claiborne Robins Stadium. On a sun-splashed Sat., Sept. 18, 2010, in front of a sell-out crowd, the Spiders won the inaugural game, 27-21 in overtime against Elon - and a new era of Spider Football was christened.

TV Market(s): Richmond (58th TV market)

All-time Record: 507-617-53  13 conference titles.

Claimed National Championships: One.
  • 2008 FCS National Champions

Rivalries:
  • William & Mary
  • James Madison

Student Population:  4,250 (2,767 undergraduate).

Endowment: $1.87 Billion

Athletic Budget:  $20.5 million

FBS Aspirations: The Richmond Spiders are a small liberal arts college with a very new stadium that only holds 8,700 people. The facility upgrades for Richmond in football alone would be too much to overcome the exposure of moving to the FBS level. Just does not make sense at all for Richmond to even consider the move.
