The Red team rallied from a 10-point deficit by scoring 13
points over the final 2 minutes, 30 seconds in a 13-10 victory over the Black
squad at the annual San Diego State football Red & Black Spring Game
Saturday at SDSU Sports Deck.
Down, 13-0, Chase Favreau found Eric Judge for
a 22-yard touchdown strike to get the Red team on the scoreboard with 2:30 left
in the game. The Red team, which was mostly comprised of the second-team and
third-team offense and defense, then got the ball back on an interception by Mahbu Keels, who got all the way to the Black
16-yard line. Two plays later, Chase Price scurried
in from 13 yards out for the eventual game-winning score.
The Black team got the ball back with 1:15 on the clock, but
fumbled after getting into the Red territory to end the game.
The Black team had scored on its opening two drives before being
shut out for the remainder of the game. Bryce Quigley capped a 6-play, 75-yard drive when he
caught a lateral behind the line of scrimmage from Adam Dingwell and thundered into the end zone just
5:50 into the game. Dingwell was 3-for-3 for 42 yards on the drive, not
including Quigley's lateral pass, which was deemed a rush.
Price, who logged most of his carries for the Black team, got
the Black squad into field goal range on the team's next possession with 35
rushing yards on five carries. Wes Feer then
connected on a 49-yard field goal with 11:30 left for the Black's final points
of the game.
The game, which was played over two 30-minute halves with
running clocks, was played in sunny and warm conditions.
Price led all Aztec rushers with 60 yards on 12 carries.
Dingwell led a group of five quarterbacks with 90 passing yards,
going 7-for-13. Along with Dingwell, Chad Jeffries (5-for-10, 69 yards), Quinn Kaehler
(7-for-7, 55 yards), Favreau (1-for-4, 22 yards, TD) and Jake Bernards (2-for-3, 8 yards) combined for 244
yards through the air, while completing 22 of 37 passes (59.4 percent).
Tim Vizzi had
five receptions for 51 yards, while Ezell Ruffin caught
three balls for 25 yards. Paul Pitts II
(47 yards), Robert Craighead(22 yards) and De'Saan Hardwick (17 yards) each added two catches
apiece.
Keels and Derek Largent shined on defense. Keels had a
game-high six tackles, while recording an interception, a forced fumble and a
fumble recovery. Largent, meanwhile, had five tackles, including four for a
loss and three sacks.
Vaness Harris had four tackles, and David Lamar and Micah Seau had
three stops apiece.
The scrimmage wraps up the Aztecs' spring practice in
preparation for the 2013 season. SDSU is coming off one of its best seasons in program
history, which concluded with a 9-4 record, a share of the Mountain West
championship and a Poinsettia Bowl appearance.
It was San Diego State's first conference championship since
1998, and first time the program played in a bowl game three consecutive years.
The Aztecs begin the 2013 season on Aug. 31, at home against
Eastern Illinois.
