Overall Breakdown: For a team that never really came close to winning any of their other 6 losses in 2010, the rivalry game versus West Virginia could have been Marshall’s best performance of the season. The Thundering Herd lost 24-21 in overtime in a game that they could have and probably should have won. With a -8 points per game average and a rushing game that was nonexistent in 2010, the singular fact that they had a chance to be bowl eligible is confounding. West Virginia had an ok (for their standards) season that could have been much better with the ball bouncing a different way one or two times. The Mountaineers had losses of 6 points, 5 points, and 3 points to round out their regular season. If the Syracuse and UCONN games went slightly different, WVU would have been playing in a BCS bowl rather than their lackluster effort versus NC State in the Champs Bowl. This game is one sided on paper but as seen in 2010 could come down to the wire once again. Look for the Mountaineers to take Marshall more seriously this fall and put the Thundering Herd away early cruising to a comfortable home victory to start the 2011 season.
