News and notes for 4/13/2012:
Arkansas State
JONESBORO (4/11/12) - The Arkansas State football team will hold its annual spring game at ASU Stadium on April 14 at 1 p.m., when A-State fans will get their first look at the defending Sun Belt Conference champion Red Wolves in a "game day" atmosphere under new head coach Gus Malzahn.
ASU began its spring camp March 14, and the spring game will count as another practice for the Red Wolves as they continue preparations for the 2012 season. ASU will practice Wednesday and Friday leading up to the spring game, and it also has two additional practices currently set for April 16 and 18 as part of its spring camp.
Admission for the spring game is set at $5, and kids 12 and under will be admitted free. The ticket also grants free entrance into ASU's home baseball game against Western Kentucky, set for 4 p.m. later that afternoon. Tickets for the spring game will be available at gates 2 and 5 at ASU Stadium or can be purchased in advance by contacting the Red Wolf Club at 870-972-2401. All parking is free of charge.

FAU

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University athletics hosted its annual athletics banquet this evening, recognizing its outstanding student-athletes for the 2011-12 school year.
The "Student-Athlete of the Year" award recognizes the male and female that best represents community service, academic performance and athletic accomplishment equally. Two senior record setters, running back

FIU

Constant pressure, speed, explosiveness and six forced turnovers, the FIU defense -- which was the No. 14 scoring defense in the nation last season -- played as advertised in the Blue & Gold Spring Game.

ULL

LAFAYETTE, La. – Javonne Lawson caught three touchdown passes, including two from Terrance Broadway, and the White team defense held tough in the fourth quarter, stopping a potential go-ahead scoring drive in the final minutes, as the White team claimed a 25-19 victory in the annual Red vs. White spring game on Saturday at Cajun Field.
The game officially brought to a close the annual spring practice season for the UL football team, which will now focus on conditioning and the weight room before opening fall camp in early August.
“I saw two teams out there today who were fighting to win,” head coach Mark Hudspeth said. “I thought both squads started out a little slowly, but after a series or two, the offenses got into a rhythm and started to show what they could do.

ULM

MONROE, La. - Late offensive fireworks powered Gold over Maroon 21-14 in the 2012 ULM Spring Football Game Saturday afternoon at Malone Stadium.
Maroon stalled the opening Gold drive after a fumble by running back Mitchell Bailey was recovered by Maroon's Khairi Usher and returned to the Gold 32 yard line. Gold held strong on defense, knocking down a pass from Maroon quarterback Ian McCoig on fourth-and-five inside the red zone.

MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee will conclude spring drills on April 14 with the annual Blue-White Spring Game presented by Kroger and Sprint/Cellular Concepts. Kickoff is set for 1 PM in Floyd Stadium and admission is free. Corey Robinson looks to improve while JUCO transfer Deon Anthony will offer a different look to defenses.
When a team goes 3-9, not many things can be said to have gone right for it. The quarterback play was not bad by any stretch, but the expected improvement from Robinson in his second season as starter was nowhere to be seen. Robinson's touchdown total decreased by seven from 28 to 21. He threw for 300 less yards and his completion percentage went down. While the interception total remained the same (15), Robinson tossed at least one pick in all but one game last season.
The game will be broadcast over the internet at GoBlueRaiders.com with Chip Walters and Kelly Holcomb calling the action.

Troy

With last year's disappointing 3-9 record leaving a bad taste in their mouths, the Troy Trojans are looking to get back to the top of the Sun Belt. In order to do that, Troy must discover what they'll be working with as they head into battle for the 2012 season. TroyTrojans.com is offering a positional breakdown of the Trojans as spring practice unfolds.

USA

MOBILE, Ala. – Tyrannace Brazil provided the only points of the second half on a seven-yard touchdown run, and Damian McGaskin forced a fumble at the goal line with a minute and a half remaining to lead the Blue to a 17-10 victory in the University of South Alabama football program’s annual Red & Blue Game Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Brazil’s touchdown came with 7:37 remaining in the final quarter, capping a four-minute and 58-second drive that covered 80 yards in 12 plays. After taking over with 45 seconds to go in the third period, Brandon Bridge connected with Jeremé Jones for a 16-yard gain and a first down on the first snap of the possession. A 20-yard completion to Brazil helped move the Blue across midfield, with Bridge moving the chains again with a 10-yard completion to Wes Saxton on fourth-and-one at the Red-35.

WKU
Bowling Green, Ky. - "I think the Red team is loaded more with defensive guys. On the opposite side, the White team is loaded with more offensive guys," said Hilltopper head coach Willie Taggart. "Both sides of the ball are evenly matched and I don't think you will see any drop off on either side of the ball. I think in games like this sometimes you don't get the execution that you normally would get. But I think in this case we will see a lot of execution on both sides of the ball."
With just two practices this week before Saturday's game, WKU went through two hours of full-squad drills this morning, before the Red and White teams broke up on separate fields to begin game planning.
"These teams are getting ready for each other," added Taggart. "It is going to be a very competitive football game, and I think everyone will be very impressed with the Hilltoppers."
The Western Kentucky University football team got back out on the field Tuesday morning to start the final week of spring practice. It was also the first workout since teams were drafted for Saturday's Red vs. White Spring Game, scheduled for 6 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
