Overall Breakdown: The Alabama State Hornets started their season with their second straight win over Mississippi Valley State in dominant fashion winning 41-9. The Hornets had a balanced attack with 196 rushing led by junior Greg Jenkins 16 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown. The passing game added 196 yards also by Jenkins on 20-28 passes and 3 touchdowns. The defense was a bend but not break type of performance allowing 17 first downs but only 9 points due in part to 7 forced turnovers by the Hornets defense. This is the first step up in competition to I-A for Alabama State since a 2008 loss to UAB by the score of 45-10. Eastern Michigan got exactly the start it needed with a convincing 41-9 win over a hapless Howard squad. The running game was rolling with senior Dominique Sherrer and sophomore Javonti Greene having identical 14 carries for 120 yards and 1 touchdown statistics. Quarterback Alex Gillett added 76yards and another score for the ground oriented Eagles. After losing 22 of their last 24 games in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, EMU decided to make their 2011 schedule easier and should benefit from the confidence building win versus Howard and easily take care of the Hornets of Alabama State in a score similar to the season opener. Somewhere in the range of 41-9 or 35-3 should move the Eagles to 2-0 going into a trip to the Big House to play in-state rival Michigan.
I enjoyed this, very well written! Go Eagles
